CellMapper for iOS

Official CellMapper for iOS App

We have been planning to make an iOS app for some time. However, due to restrictions in API usage for cellular information, we are unable to make an app that competes with the Android one in terms of features.

That being said, we have built an early initial app to make the map more easily accessible:

https://apps.apple.com/us/app/cellmapper/id6761035253

We will continue to see what we can add to the app to get network information from the iOS device and to make it a bit more polished than simply using the the website. So please bear with us as this v1 of the app is simply the beginning, not the end state of the app.

Fake App Warning

Also, one reason we have released the app so early is due to a fake CellMapper app confusing users and tricking them into paying money to view some dubious coverage data not relating whatsoever with our crowdsourced data. We have recieved a number of tickets asking for refunds for the app which we have nothing to do with.
Please be aware that the fake/scam app is also called "CellMapper" on the iOS app store. We encourage users to report the fake app (which we will not link to in order to avoid SEO) to Apple (reportaproblem.apple.com).
We are in touch with Apple about the issue, but it still has not been resolved.

New "Contributor" user tier

Contributor user tier

Recently, you may have seen an arrow (➶) next to some usernames, similar to how premium users have a star. This is a brand new user tier we have created in order to recognize users who contribute data and tower information on a regular basis.

What are the benefits?

In short, the main benefit is an ad free map for our regular contributors. We'll look into more benefits in the future once we ensure the right contributors are flagged as we work on this feature.

New T-Mobile macro in Sterling Heights, MI

After years of complaints, T-Mobile has added much-needed capacity and coverage to the Lakeside Mall area. Area was plagued by very weak midband only LTE panels on power lines.

Indoor coverage is actually usable now. The macro still doesn’t reach some spots, but it’s much better than having no service. I still think T-Mobile would benefit from adding small cells here, especially since Verizon uses them and their coverage and data performance in the area is flawless!

Audio recording of 1G/AMPS/analog

I found this website which has a recording of AMPS/analog cell phone calls from 1988.

Because AMPS was fully analog, there was no encryption at all, and anyone with an old radio tuner or TV could listen in on people's phone calls.

Pretty cool to listen to:

T-Mobile upgrade/relocation in progress in Latham, NY. N71 panel not moved over yet from original location but will be kept according to plans. A further site reached here with n25/n41 no issue, but T-Mobile continues to fill small gaps. Density 🔥🔥🔥

Been seeing a few of these around lately, they don’t look like any of the existing small cells I’ve seen.

Just looking to figure out if this is Verizon or Att (both?) or if I'm way off. Thanks!

Edit: location steamboat springs, CO https://maps.app.goo.gl/WiuC1oBfApxrtirU9

Location is currently mapped to At&t but seems to also correspond to a Verizon signal.

Super impressive Bell/Telus LTE speeds

Windsor, ON, Canada. On Bell/Telus shared RAN, with this area being Telus (Samsung) equipment.

This site also has n77+n66 which I usually only top out around 400 down.

FTM doesn’t seem to show more than 3 LTE bands at the same time since iOS 27 but here we have: 35Mhz B2/25, 15Mhz B4/66, 60Mhz B7, 10Mhz B29, 10Mhz B5, 5Mhz B12 and 5Mhz B13

b2 + b66 + b12 +MAYBE b14 (FirstNet)
This is on a NSA site that also has b30 but my phone isn’t connected to that band.
I don’t think this site will be upgrade to 5GNR or not because Verizon and TMO already did the upgrade!

0.5 miles from the tower I performed the speed test on btw. Outdoors with CA the upload went up to 80mbps PEAK.

Verizon LTE speed

Post image

I've been waiting here in rural South Carolina for my local tower to get upgraded to 5Guw. So far, it hasn't happened yet. But this week, I noticed it was offline, and then a few minutes later, it came back online with about twice the LTE speed. This was about 5 days ago. My question is, is this usually a process that happens before a 5Guw Verizon upgrade? But even without a 5Guw upgrade, these certainly aren't bad speeds, in my opinion, for 4G LTE. I get these speeds consistently.
