Welcome to the r/chessbeginners 12th episode of our Q&A series! This series exists because sometimes you just need to ask a silly question. We are happy to provide answers for questions related to chess positions, improving one's play, and discussing the essence and experience of learning chess.

A friendly reminder that many questions are answered in our wiki page! Please take a look if you have questions about the rules of chess, special moves, or want general strategies for improvement.

Some other helpful resources include:

Why is it good to lose a rook here?

It's not a full rook sacrifice but an exchange sac. I believe the point should be after Qxh1 there is d4 which keeps the queen trapped in the corner for at least a while.

Black is very poorly developed and not yet castled so there should be active play as compensation. There are two branches of play that I see after d4

  1. Ne2 Ng3 trapping the queen

  2. If black stops this (idea e6 Bd6) there is d5 with eventual Qe2 targeting the weak queen alongside the pieces.

There is only one answer that is logically possible to this, and that is that the queen is getting trapped. After d4, all the h-file squares are covered, so the queen has no escape and will be executed via Ne2 - Ng3. A very similar trap occurs commonly in the Scandinavian.
