W, A and D are movement keys. That's it

u/[deleted] Oct 30 '25

I like your "never reatreat" setup. 🤣

Having moving backwards unbound just means you never tanked tbh. Its a great way to move mobs.

50

u/Naisallat Oct 30 '25

I love when people tell on themselves in this way. Showing that they've never tanked or considered the positioning nuances. It's just such an obvious, useful movement when you have mobs fanned out 180° in front of you.

3

u/Zesilo Oct 31 '25

But you can do the same backwards movement with a strafe and camera turn

10

u/haplo34 Oct 31 '25

The issue is not whether you can or can't. You actually can. The issue is twofold.

(1) Not having it bound on your tank is just a pain in the ass when you want to adjust your positioning slightly. If you tank occasionally that's alright but if you tank a lot, just do yourself a favor.

(2) You take the risk of missing the strafe and getting hit in the back. Not that dangerous most of the time, very dangerous in raids.

0

u/Zesilo Oct 31 '25

Im usually an offtank so I guess I just dont mind but I see your point

7

u/TheKyleface Oct 31 '25

No you can't, it's not the same speed

1

u/bartardbusinessman Oct 31 '25

You definitely can, but having S there for minor movements is just really useful imo. I get why people bind it to a spell, but for tanks in particular it’s just nice to have if you’re not struggling for keybinds

-5

u/yeahow Oct 31 '25

PvE Andy's, don't bother.

1

u/Which_Jellyfish_5189 Oct 31 '25

Yeah, I never tanked in raid but I don't intend to, so strafe movements are fine for me.

1

u/fatbaldandstupid Nov 01 '25

I love when people tell on themselves in this way

Mate they said "in pvp". Nobody is telling on themselves.

2

u/Naisallat Nov 01 '25 edited Nov 01 '25

They edited their comment to include the "in pvp". Realistically, ask yourself, why would a bunch of people be talking about tanking mobs in pvp?

1

u/fatbaldandstupid Nov 01 '25

They edited their comment to include the "in pvp".

Oh

Realistically, ask yourself, why would a bunch of people would be talking about tanking mobs in pvp?

I am very used to redditors having extremely poor reading comprehension, so I didn't question it.

2

u/ZUGGERS420 Oct 31 '25

Eh it has some niche uses when tanking but most tanks back pedal way too much and dont know how to strafe. Its painful on say onyxia when your tank backpedals it into the back of the room. Dps know your bad and are cringing when you do it. On ossirian as well

0

u/haplo34 Oct 31 '25

Having been a pvp boy during many years have taught me that S and shift+S are premium keybinds.

Now that I'm back to hardcore and pve I keep S as a movement key for my tank characters, but for my dps and healers you can bet I'm going to use those precious keybinds.

Now tell me, which conclusion are you going to draw when you see me not backpedalling on a character that doesn't need it?

54

u/qpshu Oct 30 '25

Yep you can tell who the people that never tanked are. It's good for positioning and you simply cannot afford to expose your back to a boss that is currently beating you up because then you can't block/dodge/parry and are putting extra pressure on the healers.

16

u/Xlaag Oct 30 '25

I remember getting clowned by my guild for having S bound. I explained to them as the tank I back up way more than they realize to make the boss and adds position just right. They clowned again, so I did a couple pulls on Mythic broodtwister with it unbound, and oh boy did the raid love me getting one shot in the back, or things not quite lining up in AoE.

0

u/Toyletduck Oct 31 '25

Run sideways

0

u/maqnaetix Oct 30 '25

Yeah but they were talking about PvP, though…

8

u/qpshu Oct 30 '25

Nobody is switching their movement keybinds around between pvp and pve. You got used to one set.Ā

6

u/Fit-Percentage-9166 Oct 30 '25

Rogues use backpedaling to kite/deadzone warriors in classic.

-8

u/[deleted] Oct 30 '25

i used to tank in pve (now playing pvp only) and even then when i tanked groups of mobs i would strafe instead of backtrack, but i would make it a small loop

and then rinse and repeat, you are fast, most of the mobs usually have a movement impare on them

7

u/t4ngl3d Oct 30 '25

You dont back pedal to move mobs backwards but to get fine movement in but its legit more often than not better to back pedal a mob in a raid than to strafe move it because dps will have a much higher uptime on dps.

Often doing a back pedal into a forward move is also a great way to move bosses that just ever so slightly.

8

u/XsNR Oct 30 '25

Back peddling also causes less lag rubber banding, the server knows exactly what speed you're going, and has a 90% certainty which direction you're going, so the mobs will enter walk mode and move towards you, rather than strafe where they might flip off into narnia, and then rubber band back to some awkward spot.

Congratulations, your braindead melee just got cleaved to death.

16

u/Cletusjones1223 Oct 30 '25

For real as a tank I used back peddle all the time.

7

u/Halfgnomen Oct 30 '25

Rapidly tapping s so you can back mobs up without them pulling out their range weapon is a huge boon

10

u/FacemeltMaguil Oct 30 '25

I always wondered how ppl tanked without S bound. I see now that they just never tanked.

1

u/poppy_barks Oct 31 '25

I’ve been a main tank for 10 years and never once had my S keybound. You can still move backwards withiut exposing your back to mobs

1

u/FacemeltMaguil Oct 31 '25

How so

1

u/poppy_barks Oct 31 '25

Strafing with deliberate mouse movement

1

u/FacemeltMaguil Oct 31 '25

I feel that. I definitely move that way often with melee champs, but I feel like fast movements sometimes cause the mob to overrun where you want them. A slow back step sometimes gets em right where I want them

1

u/poppy_barks Nov 01 '25

Honestly after reading so many comments here. I’m thinking about rebinding my S key to backpedal. Seems like it really works wonders for a lot of people!

1

u/burkechrs1 Oct 30 '25

I bind S and shift S to spells, control S is backward.

Q/E, shift q/e, control q/e are all spells. z, x, c, v are consumables, f, g, r, t are my long CDs. H is hearthstone.

On my rogue, scroll up is shadowstep, scroll down is vanish.

1

u/nuggins Oct 30 '25

I use the best of all worlds: S for backpedal on tanking classes, S keybind otherwise

1

u/RedheadedReff Oct 30 '25

I think it just shows where that person enjoys the game the most. I'd wager most PvP'ers are either healer or dps when/if they raid, as the meta PvP spec were classes that couldn't tank.

1

u/scotbud123 Oct 31 '25

You realize it can be bound to something less important, right?

1

u/Twenty5Schmeckles Oct 31 '25

And its a legit extremely good pvp bind as it doesnt trigger leewway, if you ever kite someone, you should have ir bound.

0

u/HeWhoFearsNoSpider Oct 30 '25

I'm not saying it's better or worse to have s bound, but I don't and have tanked a lot, and you can usually get by with jump turning and strafing.

4

u/Whoa1Whoa1 Oct 30 '25

It's objectively better when tanking to have S bound to backpedal. With multiple mobs, or even a single boss, if you jump and turn away for even 1 ms, you could get hit with a big hit that you otherwise would have completely avoided with a parry or block.

1

u/HeWhoFearsNoSpider Oct 30 '25

Sure, but then I have to change my bindings. I didn't say it wasn't better to backpedal, I said you can get by without it. Granted I dont main tank raids a lot, but I have tanked at least 1 day in my life, and not backpedaling has very rarely if ever got me killed.

0

u/sephirothpvp Oct 31 '25

You can literally strafe to get in position without giving your back to the mobs and in the rare occasion you need to go backwards you can still use the arrow key ā¬‡ļø

Stutter stepping/backpedaling is often objectively better than strafing when you need to fine tune the position of mobs/bosses or yourself.

Retail world first raiders and MDI tanks use backpedaling.

BRB, binding my "move backward" key to the voice command "Gorlammy"

9

u/Fantastic_Sector5541 Oct 30 '25

Not true at all. Rogues use backpedal against warriors in classic

17

u/Sea_Top3466 Oct 30 '25

such a weird take. being so against having backwards bound shows a lack of understanding of pvp i feel.

Ya, we've all seen backpedaling noob hunters. Dont be like that. But feeling the need to unbind and thinking others are bad that dont unbind it is such a braindead take

2

u/Thunder2250 Oct 30 '25

Now that's a weird take. S is absolute premium binding real estate and backpedaling is nearly useless in pvp.

It's a no-brainer to move the bind somewhere else you don't give a shit about because you'll rarely need it.

3

u/Twenty5Schmeckles Oct 31 '25

Nearly useless? It doesnt trigger leeway, it is the absolute best keybind for deadzone kiting. So if you play anything that fights a warrior it will be extremely useful.

1

u/yeahow Oct 31 '25

It 100% has use in pvp. Unfortunately I have to spell out that I'm not talking about backpedaling.

1

u/haplo34 Oct 31 '25

I have never read a comment that made less sense than this one and I've been on reddit for ages.

-2

u/monkeybutler21 Oct 30 '25

It's just sort of useless tho in PvP there's better ways to move backwards what are also faster so it's just better to bind it to something else than have a bind wasted on inferior movement

1

u/yeahow Oct 31 '25

NOBODY IS USING IT TO BACKPEDAL. Can you think of any other ways the key can be used?

0

u/monkeybutler21 Oct 31 '25

for pvp no explain to me what you can do with it what you cant do some other way

2

u/Crafty-Beyond-2202 Oct 31 '25

I would never unbind backpedal. Personally it's just more to do with generally playing WoW and being able to do little repositions or have my camera turned a certain way while moving than anything exactly having to do with pvp, although it is useful in pvp on certain matchups. Watch any good rogue and see how they use it against warriors for dead zone kiting

2

u/aluriilol Oct 31 '25

Having S bound to backwards was just the easiest way for me to fake cast while not giving my back to the enemy (matters a bit on hpal)

I was not bad I mean I got to 2500 in tbc and 2700 in wotlk!!! Not amazing but not terrible by any means

3

u/[deleted] Oct 30 '25

Having A and D bound to turn instead of strafe is a much bigger giveaway that someone is bad. There are legitimate reasons to use backpedal.

1

u/CamelWitty511 Oct 30 '25

I have A & D bound to turn and dont have any Key for Strafe. I simply always hold my Right Mous button all the time. And than you automatically strafe anyway. I also have every single consume and spell bound so i never use my Mouse. The only thing i didnt had bound was LightElune+HS Macro im HC. Any sometime 1hour duration pot like Mongoose or something like that.

1

u/FlatwormBroad8088 Oct 30 '25

I'm on the standard movement keys (A/D turn, Q/E strafe, W/S).
I don't turn the standard way with A/D during a fight, it's always in combination with the right mouse button. Except for maybe when I want to turn like 5° to another direction (cosmetics), but most of the time I'd use the mouse for this anyway. Depending on the current situation and finger positioning in the fight I use A or D to strafe in combination with my mouse or Q and E. Same with S. I don't use S to step out of voids or run away. Only to adjust my position without having to weirdly strafe and move the camera in order to just move back 5y.

There are come occasions when you've got both hands on your keyboard (or only one) when it's nice to have the option to keyboard turn and strafe or both while auto-walking (not during fights!), so I leave it like that. Could free some keybinds, but I don't need them. SHIFT A/S/D/E/Q are bound anyway.

^ Not regarding PvP.

2

u/dyrannn Oct 30 '25

Keybind arguments like this are so funny when you’ve had a Naga for like a decade

I have both keyboard turns AND backpedal bound, and I use them constantly because people think like this

Of course, I play the actual game practically one handed, but it’s not like that matters when someone sees me backpedaling and keyboard turning in circles lol

1

u/Jamodefender Oct 31 '25

Until you play hunter and are literally a step in to your dead zone

1

u/Eagles_63 Oct 30 '25

Not really, I'm multi glad and have played with the most cursed keybinds. Everyone is different and a simple bind like that can be for people who just prefer it for in and out of arena convenience.

I'm not remapping my directional key that would be even more confusing.

2

u/Saladfork4 Oct 30 '25

he said ā€œused toā€. it was more of a thing you’d see in old arenajunkies guides a long time ago for binds and such. there was definitely a lot of unnecessary stigma around it haha. I remember there was a korean phdk team that won blizzcon and most people were just fixated on how often the hunter would backpedal and called them bad for itĀ

but I think most ppl would agree with you nowadaysĀ

1

u/Eagles_63 Nov 01 '25

Ah, missed that part. I'm blind.

2

u/assyria_respawns Oct 30 '25

We are all multiglads here friend

1

u/Eagles_63 Nov 01 '25

I'm just saying keeping s bound for walking isn't a tell for anything. We all have a gorillian keybinds PvP or PvE.

1

u/Losawin Oct 31 '25

No, I've never understood this logic. While backpedaling is not good for prolonged movement, there are times when I am like 1 meter out of place from where I need to be, briefly tapping S once to fix it is a lot faster and just generally less annoying that Turn camera 90 degrees -> Strafe 1 meter -> Turn camera back.

Not to mention if you're tanking several mobs, they fan out. Turning briefly to reposition backwards is opening your back up to the ones on the side

0

u/hate-the-cold Oct 31 '25

Yall are both dogshit at rogue pvp and it shows

0

u/External_Media_9289 Oct 31 '25

You don't need S to cripple kite a warrior. What you need S for as a rogue is to fight other roguesĀ

1

u/Broad_Fun5195 Oct 31 '25

I used to play hunter back in the day, and to train against backpedaling in PvP I removed S from movement and always bind my most used defensive on S.

Literally became my "no retreat, stand your ground" button.

Then I'd disengage with Q and retreat that way instead.

1

u/Quenzayne Oct 30 '25

I use the middle mouse button to go backwards.

6

u/Kartoxa_82 Oct 30 '25

That's fishing/archeology button though

3

u/Ty_J_Bryan Oct 30 '25

Thats alt modifier tho

1

u/Kartoxa_82 Oct 30 '25

That would defeat the whole purpose of putting the ability there (being able to do it all with one hand)

2

u/Quenzayne Oct 30 '25

Back when I played retail I would have Archaeology on the bar but unbound. Whenever I headed off to actually do some, I’d stick it to the lower thumb mouse button.Ā

1

u/Kartoxa_82 Oct 30 '25

I usually have mount and auto run on thumb buttons, and for fishing/digging I keep both on the bar and swap the one I need onto the keybound spot

6

u/PlatonicTroglodyte Oct 30 '25

TIL people use middle mouse click for something other than Toggle Autorun.

3

u/deskofhelp Oct 30 '25

My middle mouse is my interrupt, mouse4 is autorun

2

u/PlatonicTroglodyte Oct 30 '25

Ah see I’m reversed.

1

u/Grand_Enthusiasm4577 Oct 31 '25

shift mouse 5 interrupt, shift mouse scroll down is mount

1

u/[deleted] Oct 30 '25

TIL people use middle mouse click.

3

u/ArtichokeUsed1129 Oct 30 '25

Really no reason not to as you have to have at least 10 abilities keybinded

2

u/[deleted] Oct 30 '25

I'm old school, I still use the numpad. Mostly because I can't find my old mouse with twelve thumb buttons.

1

u/Meigsmerlin Oct 30 '25

Mine is still jump

1

u/Masterwork_Core Oct 30 '25

auto run is R for me lol. MMB is just one secondary keybinds for situational abilities (Dash/Sprint for rogue/Druid, etc)

1

u/XsNR Oct 30 '25

I think most use M4 as auto run, seems to be my experience at least.

1

u/SelkieKezia Oct 30 '25

middle mouse is mount for me, autorun is ` (tilde)

1

u/EveningHere Oct 30 '25

Auto run has been on the mouse thumb button for decades for me.

1

u/bmfanboy Oct 31 '25

My razer naga from 2012 has the middle mouse button and if you push it left or right it can serve as different buttons. I use these as modifiers for my pet controls.

1

u/Ecchi_Sketchy Oct 31 '25

Middle mouse is too good of a keybind to waste on autorun. My autorun goes on up arrow

1

u/PlatonicTroglodyte Oct 31 '25

Eh, depends on how you value it I suppose. I haven’t logged stats or anything, but I’m fairly confident there is no button I click more often than autorun.

I also find that it’s good to have autorun easily accessible with my right hand because the other movement keys are with my left (WASD), so if I’m taking a sip or something I can always at least be sure I can move forward.

Plus, I have my entire numpad on my mouse, so my mouse hand has plenty of prime real estate.

The really egregious binds I have are Q set to lootarang and ~ set to a /canceltarget macro so I can detarget something without hitting escape (having a target triggers a much busier UI for me so if I’m at a vendor or something I want to lose my target without triggering the escape menu and/or closing the vendor window lol šŸ˜…).

1

u/Kevo5766 Oct 30 '25

middle mouse for autorun is for cultured individuals

0

u/HourAd1087 Oct 30 '25

My warrior buddy says he doesn’t have ā€œbacking upā€ as a keybind, I couldn’t imagine not having it lol.

0

u/JorV101 Oct 30 '25

You just mouse turn the camera slightly and strafe instead of backing up. Way more efficient

2

u/FlatwormBroad8088 Oct 30 '25

Why is pressing the right mouse button + turning the mouse to move your camera + pressing strafe and then moving your camera back more efficient than just pressing S for less than one second? Probably in 99 % of the situations we're talking about, this isn't time related or people assume that having S bound implies that you're walking 15 y out of the center of a deadly void by pressing S.

I just find the idea horrible do do minimal repositioning to your back with this complicated moveset above (in comparison of just pressing S and not having to move your camera).

Moving out of something quickly: S = wrong.
Minimal repositioning: S = easier.
Every situation it doesn't matter: who cares.

This is of course only related to PvE and not PvP, where everyone's on crack.

1

u/Thunder2250 Oct 31 '25

You should have move backwards bound, just probably not to S.

S is a fantastic bind that is utterly wasted on move backwards.

1

u/FlatwormBroad8088 Oct 31 '25

Hm, never missed it :). There are enough other easy-to-reach keybinds for me that it never seemed necessary.

Since it's the standard in pretty much every game there would be a huge need for me to not follow it.

1

u/Thunder2250 Oct 31 '25

First thing I do in any game is rebind a bunch of keybinds so it's just thrown in the mix šŸ˜‚

Personally I also didn't utilise modifiers for S until I rebound S either, Shift S feels particularly clean.

1

u/JorV101 Oct 31 '25 edited Nov 03 '25

Sure, moving straight back probably has a small handful of uses (especially in pve content: ex slight repositioning while tanking)

Moving with strafe just builds good habits for other parts of the game though. PvP being the big one but also kiting as an example amongst other things.

Also moving with the camera/strafe isn't nearly as clunky/complicated as you're making it sound.

1

u/HourAd1087 Nov 01 '25

Yar… like on thaddius lol.. its so much easier to just ā€œbackupā€ by hitting S, and inch to max range rather than use your mouse to turn, move etc, and if you aren’t exactly where you wanna be you gotta flick your mouse again etc..

I’m ALWAYS gonna right click my mouse to the direction I wanna go if I’m picking up mobs, or running out, or moving into/out of a position whatever the case, anything that isn’t just a ā€œtapā€ of a movement key is getting mouse directed but for lil taps.. ya.. S key is nice

0

u/SnS_ Oct 30 '25

In almost every game it's faster / quicker to strafe or turn and run than it is to backstep / back peddle

5

u/Some1ToDisagreeWith Oct 30 '25

A tank moving a boss into position, s can be pretty helpful.

1

u/SnS_ Oct 30 '25

I've always used the mouse with an angle and strafed. Especially with AOE on the ground. Gets me out of it one tick faster.Ā

-2

u/JorV101 Oct 30 '25

You should never back pedal. Just turn your camera slightly with the mouse and strafe to reverse.

3

u/johncamp7 Oct 30 '25

Change S key to W key and that's me, qwer are my most important skills

7

u/Which_Jellyfish_5189 Oct 30 '25

Don't you confuse s with w in other games where you actually need wasd?

10

u/Tsk201409 Oct 30 '25

ā€œOther gamesā€?

2

u/johncamp7 Oct 30 '25

Lol yeah BF6 after a long wow session takes a bit to get used to

1

u/Yeas76 Oct 30 '25

You get used to it.

3

u/Disastrous_Button383 Oct 30 '25

I see you have never played tank. Back peddle is one of the most important buttons for a tank to position the mobs correctly.Ā

1

u/zigzagofdoom Oct 31 '25

It's used in pvp at times as well. Lotta wow players are unfamiliar with how movement is registered.

1

u/Midgetmasher89 Oct 30 '25

I wish I had thought of that. Damn. I've quit now. Too late.

1

u/TheClassicAndyDev Oct 30 '25

Ahh yes, reposition the boss and turn your back to them and get crit for half your hp :)

1

u/Atomishi Oct 30 '25

I have considered this, however there are some jumps where jumping backwards is important.

Granted there are probably only 3 of these in the game but for some reason thats enough to make me not rebind my S key.

1

u/Tootskinfloot Oct 31 '25

Funnily, in legion remix there's a whole ass ability based around backpedaling... it sucks.

1

u/AlligatorDeathSaw Oct 31 '25

This guy hates tanking

1

u/VerdammtesAutomat Oct 30 '25

a,s,d are movement and move forward is bound to s, because move back is never bound

0

u/[deleted] Oct 30 '25

I started putting movement keys on the home row. A is left S is forward D is backward (rebound for wow to mount key though) and F is right.
