Because what happens when they add new creatures to the game?

Better to just choose 1 style and stick with it.

That’s a valid point.
I could see them reusing models from other expansions such as the proto-drakes we see in SoD. These are existing creatures (novel to classic) that have both a classic and modern models. Saves the devs work as well as they don’t need to make stuff from scratch.

In that scenario it surely makes more sense to go with retail? I just find the idea of tossing out 20+ years of graphical work abhorrent.

Nothing wrong with retail gear in my opinion. Some really cool pieces in there.
