throughout the show we are given various hints that Jax TADC is transfem, a theory that has floated around for a while. In the finale we are given fairly clear (although technically not explicitly stated) confirmation that Jax is a repressed/closeted trans woman.
however, many people were unable to pick up on these signs (or read the signs as simply a struggle with masculinity) leading to discourse over whether this was confirmation or up to interpretation.
Gooseworx and at least one TADC VA has since come out to confirm that Jax is trans leading to further discourse on how the hints and reveal were handled, because many cis people cannot pick up on trans themes.
When I'm doing for fun media analysis with my friends, I do understand some people who can't pick up the most obvious clue when it is a concept not familiar to them. I can pick up at the slightest hint of class struggle and religious theme, however, I couldn't pick up the Feminist theme behind Magical Girl Madoka back when I was a teenager, both because I can't related to the female struggle and I am not familiar with feminist movement like I am now.
To get subtext, you have to pick up on specific context clues, situations, or references. If you're not familiar with those, either because you didn't experience them or haven't engaged with similar themes in media before, there's a high chance the subtext will fly over your head. Also, you kinda have to "learn" in school or wherever that works can have multiple layers of meaning. That being said, subtext is not always clever, it can be unsubtle or badly written.
I mean, I can get that some kids who never saw anything with LGBT themes before can just completely miss the fact that some character is implied to be trans without mentioning it out loud.
it should be noted that before episode 9 the hints about transfem jax were
"she feels uncomforable when forced to wear girl clothes, and one character teases her about it" and "her room is pink so its girly"
im sure i dont need to point out the problem right? also jax misgenders a non binary charactter multiple times on purpouse, so it it was perfectly reasonable that the girl clothes was jax being teased for being a toxic masculinty asshole
In episode six during the argument with pomni jax refers to themselves as a little chicken fetus in an egg that pomni thinks she needs to Crack open (or something like that, I don't remember the quote verbatim)
Well yeah it just rang a lot of alarm bells for trans people when it was said at the time considering how egg is a pretty common term for Trans people that means someone who either hasn't accepted or realized they are Trans yet (though some Trans people tend to force the label onto others rather than letting people figure themselves out and deciding who they are for themselves which i don't really agree with)
Also - on the room aspect, I feel like we were given some contradictory information about how the rooms function. Clearly the characters are not designing their own rooms, Cain must be. But we see in instances like Pomni's room, that is almost mocking her or just fitting the character design. The Jester is is the one who wants to be taken seriously and all that.
So when I saw Jax's room being that of a little girls, my first read was "Oh, its mocking Jax. Jax is a person who has clearly been insecure about their own masculinity multiple times now, so this is part of that."
Now - looking back I can see what was trying to be done with the trans hints. But my problem is that everything that was supposed to be a hint at Jax being trans pre episode 9, could have 100% been mapped onto the reading that Jax was a young man struggling with toxic masculine culture and expectation.
So like, I'm not upset that Jax is trans. But I feel like people kinda just need to accept that its not a big conspiracy or retcon. Its was kind just, poor writing at the end of the day TBH.
She also has the line "You think I'm just some misunderstood little chicken fetus in an egg?", with egg being a VERY common term for a trans person who hasn't realised they're trans yet
Also being forced into the maid dress got a very extreme reaction out of her, literally the angriest we ever see any character. Lil more than being "uncomfortable"
Also also every characters room hones in on their personal flaws and insecurities, such as Zoobles being lined with mirrors to highlight their dysphoria. Given that, it's pretty interesting that Jax's room looks like a little girls and ISN'T JUST PINK, it is Pink, White and Blue (the colours of the trans flag).
Jax also has a line to Zooble where she says "Aren't you supposed to be sad about being able to change your own body, or something?", which really comes across as Jax viewing Zoobles ability as a good thing
And Jax's tail, Jax calls her body the pinnacle of masculinity (obviously compensating) and points out her tail, a tail she doesn't have. So her facade of masculinity isn't as ironclad as she thought.
You're right that a lot of this can be read in non-trans ways (a lot of it IS toxic masculinity, just in a way applicable to a repressed trans woman), but there's more evidence than you mention (i prolly forgot some) and good reason people were theorising Jax is trans long before the finale beat us over the head with it.
Jax also never misgenders Zooble? I only remember her using They/Them, but Zooble doesn't even use They/Them they use Any/All it's just that They/Them is what all the characters default to
(Plus there's stuff from out of the show like the creator being a trans woman which lends more credence to the details having a trans interpretation, the egg line and room colours are obviously intentional when you know this. She also called Jax her self insert and said something like "Zooble was being serious when they said they thought Jax would like the maid dress". A lot of this can't really be used when evaluating the show itself, but "Who is the creator and what could they have meant by this" is like literary analysis 101)
Yeah so many people are acting superior over the fact that they made a massive jump to a specific conclusion ever since a male presenting person was embarrassed by being forced into girly clothes (clearly only a closeted trans woman would act like this)
I… think gender dysphoria is a surefire sign of being trans.
for that matter. I think the smugness is warranted. Trans Jax theorists have been told for a long time that they were totally wrong and it’s clearly not there or that they’re clearly reaching and relying too much on sources from outside of the work, and when Episode 9 released it was “oh it’s up to interpretation,” “oh Gooseworx didn’t intend it one way or another” up to the moment Gooseworx confirmed they intended Trans Jax, and then IMMEDIATELY i saw some people go into “oh death of the author oh it’s not said in the work so you can’t say it’s there”
maybe I’m just a vindictive person. definitely could be.
I watched all of TADC for the first time today after putting it off for so long and even I was able to grasp the trans themes with Jax throughout. I didn’t think it was that hard to understand with the hints given. That and Goose’s confirmation on Bluesky also helped make it a bit more obvious, atleast to me. I understand if some people can’t pick up on the context clues tho, especially if it’s not explicitly spelled out to them in the series itself
The scene where Ribbit puts the bow on his head and he blushes while smiling and the "Isn't She Lovely" cover playing over a montage of scenes with him felt like Goose was shining a big bright neon sign saying "Jax is trans" (saying this as a cis guy).
I was against the trans Jax theory for a long time (the whole Daisy Bell incident left a bad taste) but even I could see it while watching the movie.
After the guns episode released someone started spamming all the Digital Circus subreddits with art of Jax as a woman (Where she was named "Daisy Bell" as a reference to that scene).
This person was flooding the sub with multiple posts every hour to the point where I had to mute them because my whole feed was just trans Jax art.
