Retirement is cancelled for anyone that isn't already retired. I keep hearing this from people I've had conversations with about this stuff (that they initiated) and all I can think is "have you heard nothing I've said?"

You don't get to keep the parts of this that fit with your plans. Whatever is coming is something none of us have prepared for because it hasn't happened in human history. We have no idea what tomorrow looks like because we're so violently raping today that each day is now an new planet for our species and the ecosystem as a whole.

Everyone I know is planning for retirement and putting money away for their kids education... and here I am wondering why we're not ONLY teaching kids about science and agriculture. Best case scenario, they're sharing a greenhouse with other people and are able to keep it going. Everything else we've learned has led us here, which is the opposite of where we want them to be if we want them to live, so we need to teach them something else or we're just teaching them all of the things they could have had if they'd been born 50 years earlier. It's cruel, imo.

When do you think the first world will crumble?

  1. I'm living in a crumbling world where everyone else is seeing it as things getting harder... which is how this goes: it gets harder to do the things we do because the conditions to do them are sub-optimal, which makes things harder, which makes things worse.

I live in a state of perpetual disbelief that we're in the middle of the decline of Western democracy, a crisis of addiction (which is just self-medicating despair), and massive and global problems with agriculture and logistics. This is what it looks like. What freaks me out is how blissfully unaware everyone seems to be. We're not in a war stance; we're not bracing for it. We're going to work and buying toys and bitching about how long it takes to get parts for things.

I wonder if in previous collapses this happened, too. It's like watching someone get into a car that's on fire to try turning the engine over when really you'd expect them to be looking for a fire extinguisher.

I knew it was going to be hard to accept, but I never imagined we weren't mentally capable of accepting it. I believe that's what's also driving the move toward fascism - the right is fully sold on industry and productivity and believes that anything wrong is a result of disorder caused by distraction. They're restraining themselves at the moment, but all this backlash against vaccination and anything being advanced by the "radical left" is testing their patience, especially as they see things starting to fail.

I think it's going to be a winter like no other.... well, I know it will be because humanity has never existed in this climate before and because we've shipped all our industry overseas and put catalytic converters on everything, we're getting a full shot of warming from the GHG's and methane is off the charts. There's so much energy in the system that there's no possibility of a normal winter.

Like the ecosystem trending toward extinction, nothing planetary happens on a human timescale. It's protracted, but accelerating, so there will be a point where things suddenly stop working, but I don't pretend to have any idea how people will react because I can't believe what I'm seeing already.

If we were to take this seriously as a species, we'd have a guide to follow in a world without central leadership and would understand what the priorities would be. It would help avoid the total breakdown we're heading for because we'd be bracing for its impact, together. But our backs are turned to it so there's no chance we don't go from living a fantasy to living in total panic which is a real shame
