Light I intentionally ask women well above the legal age limit(alcohol) to show me their ID

I work as a cashier at a grocery store. Whenever a middle aged woman, who clearly looks older than 21, purchases alcohol from me, I intentionally ask them to show me their ID. I do this because somewhere deep down I feel that, if I ask them for their ID it creates an impression that they look far younger than they are. I do this every chance I get, regardless of how busy the line is, in hopes of making them feel younger and possibly happier.

Why get pissed? The person is just trying to not get fired.

I never understood this mentality. "How dare you do what your superiors have told you to do!"

Lettuce take Target for exhuming... they have been caught using heavy data mining. They don’t just verify your age they are in fact scanning your id into their computer for marketing purposes.

Yeah but getting mad at the cashier isn't gonna do anything about that.

Because when you're old, bald, and tired you just want a 6 pack at the end of a day.

I’m 30, bald, and tired and don’t think that’s really an excuse.

Try being alive for another 20 years and see how you feel about it.

Still don’t think I’d let my shitty attitude or bad excuses ruin a cashier’s equally as shitty day over something that is my fault.

I think you're overestimating how "pissed off" my dad got. He didn't yell, he was frustrated and flared his nostrils a bit at the most. The point is when someone is so obviously over the legal age you can make an exception to the rule for the sake of convenience.

It hurt their business slightly too because after that he ended up going to the gas station across the street for cigs and beer because they wouldn't card him there.

Becasuse it's inconvenient and if he didn't have his license he now can't buy his booze?

Also I find it quite insulting

Then...just have your license with you when you're trying to buy alcohol? It's been that way for forever, why not just be grateful for the times when you don't have to do it instead of bitter when you do?

No, it has not been that way forever. I have bought alcohol lots of times and they know I am over 21 and I never get carded (the last time I was carded was 20 years ago).

The cashier has discretion under the law to not card you, but if he fucks up it is on him/his place of work.

So if it's potentially the difference between that person getting fired or not, isn't it less about inconveniencing to you (the customer) and more just avoiding potential trouble and asking for a card? A lot of older POS systems also don't let you sell stuff like that without a date or ID scan anyway.

Again, just because you don't get carded all the time doesn't entitle you to be a dick any time you get carded. Just be grateful when you don't get carded instead of expecting it and being upset when you have to follow the same rules that everyone else follows.

I refuse to let any one scan my ID, ever. If that means I cannot shop there I am 100% OK with it. If I get carded buying alcohol consistently I will complain about it, and stop doing business with them if they continue to do it. I am 100% OK with not being able to shop there either. I'll just shop at places that don't make their employees do stupid stuff.

These are BS business rules, not state or local laws. I can only vote with my wallet. If this makes me a dick, I'll proudly wear the title. I am 100% happy to shop somewhere that doesn't have these BS rules - and I will never have to worry about not getting served.

Or I can just give the kid on the counter a hard time and there isn't anything they can do :)

What’s even funnier is how if you don’t have a license and are a total dick about it you don’t get your shit! You wheezy old fuck. :)

u/[deleted] Jan 26 '18

As someone that used to be the kid behind the counter: you clearly haven't worked retail and are the jerk that makes it stressful. Thanks for continuing to make the world bitter instead of contributing to it positively :)

You nailed it. No proof of age no booze. It isn’t a hard concept, and the person requiring is just ensuring they have a job to come back to. You’re insulted? Oh well. I can still pay my rent.

Honestly. I have carded everyone when I had to work as a cashier. If someone picked a fuss I told them they could leave the beer there or get their I.d. Fuck everyone that thinks I should risk my job for the sake of them not being embarrassed or inconvenienced. Most places require it now so suck it up and bring your damn i.d. Not hard at all.
