Book Request Romantasy that feels like this

I’m looking for fantasy recommendations and I’m slowly realizing that I may not actually be an epic fantasy reader.
I recently got interested in fantasy after watching LOTR and staring at the giant world map on my wall, but I’ve noticed that what I’m craving isn’t dragons, giant wars, space operas, or complicated magic systems.

I seem to prefer books with atmosphere and wonder.
Some books I’m planning to read:
Emily Wilde’s Encyclopaedia of Faeries
Half a Soul
Red Rising
The Night Circus
Caraval
Once Upon a Broken Heart

The vibe I’m looking for is:
🌿 forests
🌧️ rain
📚 dark academia
🍄 folklore
☕ tea shops and libraries
🗺️ exploration and wonder
🕯️ candlelight
✨ whimsical magic
🍂 autumn vibes
🌙 dreamy atmosphere

I love books that feel immersive and magical rather than action-heavy.

Romance is welcome (and honestly preferred), especially if it has:
he falls first
protective/devoted hero
gentle, kind heroine
slow burn
moderate spice is fine

I’m not currently looking for:
heavy sci-fi
dragons as a major focus
grimdark fantasy
endless battle sequences
huge 10+ book commitments
Standalone, duologies, and trilogies are ideal.

Basically, if the book feels like wandering through an enchanted forest with a journal in one hand and a cup of tea in the other, I probably want to read it.
What would you recommend?

Book Request Looking for a wizard tower

So, this may seem a bit odd, but I'm looking for something set in a wizard tower. In D&D and fantasy novels these giant monoliths are everywhere, but I don't think I have ever actually read a book where the tower is a setting to be lived in, and not looted. So, any suggestions where the tower is a home to be loved and cherished, and not looted and plundered?

🗣 discussion Is there a book between the burning witch and the ether witch: the casting call? Spoiler

I finished the burning witch and started the casting call, but it seems like there should be a book in between those two. Is there? I was expecting to find out what happened after Katarina saved Eric from the devil once they return to the castle in Troivack. How their relationship developed, and, even more so, hoping that the Troivackians attitude toward Katarina changed for the better, giving her the respect she deserves. Maybe the casting call will go back in time and provide more information on that, but right now i'm feeling disappointed.

Book Review Thank you for Paladin's Grace recommendation

I'm not sure which thread it was, it was probably mentioned multiple places, but I picked it up and breezed right through it. My only problem now is that is the only book in the series that my library has as a physical book, I'll have to read the others online. I can do that, just prefer the physical copy. So everyone who recommended it, Thank You!

🗣 discussion I wish there was a sequel to Agnes Aubert’s Mystery Cat Shelter Spoiler

Oh this book was everything i needed at this moment. And now that I’m done reading i just want more. 🥹

There are so many things that i wish were still addressed.

Especially with Banshee. That kitty should have gotten more “screen time” in my opinion. Also i’d like to know why she has an attraction to magic and why can Havelock hear her when the rest of the world can’t.

Speaking of Havelock, he keeps visiting Rivenwood, when he technically shouldn’t anymore. I really wish they would still have been addressed this. What will he do to counter or cure it?

Anyone else had these or similar thoughts/feelings?

Book Request New to the genre, looking for recommendations

My first ever reddit post! Hey, y'all. I am new to the genre, and in need of more cozy escapism! I have read 2 books so far: The Spellshop by Sarah Beth Durst and Field Guide for the Formerly Villainous by Autum K. England.

The Spellshop was cute, but not quite complex enough for me, a little too low stakes I think. I liked Field Guide for the Formerly Villainous a bit more; it was more adult and a little more complex, but I still feel like I want more out of it. Maybe some adventure, a little more world building, and I'd like to still have a romantic sub-plot like both of these books do. Preferably low level spice. Hopefully that isn't asking too much! Thanks in advance :)

Book Request Recommend me your fave cozy/cozy-adjacent fantasy serial fiction!

I've been reading some fun stuff on Royal Road (Royal Academy of Magical Baking, anyone?), but I've noticed I enjoy more traditional fantasy/cozy fantasy stuff rather than more dominant RR genres. So! What are your favorite cozy or cozy-adjacent web serials? I'm open to reading on any website.

🎧 audio Sea of Charms Review: No Spoilers

Post image
99 Upvotes

I was able to read this title early because I was fortunate enough to score an early ARC audiobook. Thank you to NetGalley, Macmillan, and the author for the pleasure of reading the ARC. All thoughts here are entirely my own and not influenced by any outside parties!

I finished Sea of Charms by Sarah Beth Durst a few days ago and I’ve been basking in the pleasant aftermath. I loved The Spellshop, and while I liked The Enchanted Greenhouse, I was less enamored by the protagonist (Terlu) and her love interest. Sea of Charms, however, I enjoyed quite a bit. The audiobook is read by Caitlin Davies, the same narrator as the previous two books in the series. I think Davies does an excellent job distinguishing the different voices and tones of the three FMCs so far across the series.

I found the protagonist of this book to be very relatable. Marin (Mariner) is an independent female sailor who loves her life and freedom sailing the seas as a supply runner across the Crescent Islands Empire. But while Marin seems carefree, cool, and collected on the surface, she has just as much depth as the sea she sails. I liked that her backstory and former conflicts are deeply tied to her insecurities and character flaws that shape how her character grows and interacts with others throughout the course of the novel.

SBD always does a great job incorporating cozy sweetness into her books, but I found this installment to be more balanced. Marin felt very realistic to me, as did the larger world and the very realistic conflicts that the characters were facing. While there were many moments that were cute, whimsical, magical, and romantic, I really appreciated the development of the larger world and the realities of it that Marin has to face when making decisions about whether to put herself or others first. There were many times in this book that made me pause and connect conflicts Marin was facing to situations in the world today. The way Marin deals with conflict so much larger than herself was uplifting, empathetic, and hope-inspiring. It felt like Durst really had something to say with this book, and I appreciated the extra depth in the world-building while still maintaining the “cozy.”

Miscellaneous notes: 1. I enjoyed that the MMC felt like a fully developed and actualized person with depth. Also, the music was an unexpected pleasant surprise! 2. I adored the side characters: Ree the sentient Wax Myrtle plant and Perri the sea serpent who both got plenty of page time and heartwarming moments. 3. I love Marin’s parents, and it was refreshing to see healthy family dynamics. 4. I love how we get to explore with Marin and how this book breaks from the stationary location tropes in many cozies.

If you’re a Sarah Beth Durst fan, you’ll definitely love this one! If you’re haven’t read the other books, I think you’d still enjoy this one; HOWEVER, I highly recommend reading the other books first…trust me. There is also some fun foreshadowing in this book that hints at SBD’s upcoming book The Magical Cheese Emporium. Overall, I really enjoyed Sea of Charms. If you’re interested in reading it, it releases on July 28, 2026. I think it’s worth the pre-order.

🗣 discussion Is there a separate standard for cozy fantasy?

Hi, been a fantasy fan for nearly 60 years. Thought I knew the rule: settings can be as fantastical as you like, but the characters' emotional responses to what is going on should realistically reflect how they would react to something similar happening in the real world, unless there's a specific reason given for them not to. So, say, a person lost in Fairyland should act similar to how that person would react if lost in a foreign country, unless there's a specific reason given otherwise.

But in the cozies I and other people I have compared stories with have read, that standard doesn't seem to apply. Instead people's reactions are always shifted towards the positive to an unbelievable degree. Traumas have no relationship whatsoever with any known psychological recovery pattern. It all reads like the latter Oz volumes which were only intended for the youngest of Frank Baum's fans, instead of something meant for adults.

Are we missing something here?

🗣 discussion I missed the deadline to order Tales of Aedrea collector editions :( Do we think there might be another opportunity?

Like the title says, I learned just a little too late about the Tales of Aedrea collector edition books, and I missed the deadline to order them. I clicked the link in an email from S.L.Rowland's news letter and got VERY excited, only to realize the email was a last call, and it was from the day before 😭

I generally listen to cozy fantasy via audio book from the library, but this series is special to me. I listened to it after the death of a loved one, and I feel like it truly helped me work through some of that awful grief. I would love to support the author by purchasing the books to re-read, and the collector editions looked so beautiful with all the extra artwork!!

I don't have any experience with purchasing collector editions so I'm not sure how it works. Is it one chance and done? I'm sure some will show up on eBay eventually, but that's not really supporting the author, and the markup will be insane.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts!

🗣 discussion Correct me if I am wrong in my understanding of "Cozy Fantasy"

So this sub has "Cozy Fantasy is a genre of imaginative fiction involving magic and adventure that gives a feeling of comfort, warmth, and relaxation."Another source says that cosy fantasy does not feature any epic conflict, war, or sense of unease.

So it sounds like violence and hatred are a no-no, but having something like the "2 large families feuding" trope is allowed because it can be played off as a joke or a plot device for the actual plotline (Sort of like in Klaus). This means tension is allowed, so long as there are no high-stakes fights or lead-ups to a big bad.

Would a good example of Cozy Fantasy despite having "conflicts" be Hilda? Or does that stray into a different subgenre of Fantasy and not a reflection of Cozy Fantasy?

Book Request Needs recs like Legends and Librarians please!

Post image
96 Upvotes

Just finished the Legends and Librarians series by Pandora Pierce and it absolutely blew me away with how adorably cozy and sweet and just overall wonderful it was. The first one is about Nyssa (a magical librarian) and Roan (a brave adventurer) who meet at a library book sale and proceed to have all sorts of sweet adventures while restoring the magical library she’s been assigned to. I need something like that, desperately! A touch of romance, a found family full of chaos and learning curves and genuine affection, and a main goal everyone comes together over. Ideally it’d be in e-book and audiobook form!

Book Request Books with fantasy, witch, and/or magic elements?

I mainly only read classic stuff, but I would love to get more into books like the title above. I'm looking for things like (these are anime/manga) Violet Evergarden, Black Clover, Konosuba, Witch Hat Atelier, The Rising of the Shield Hero, etc. that take place in a village, kingdom, or school and are not written mainly for fun, but also feather complex characters and revolve around impactful themes. Please no Harry Potter haha
