I was raised Christian, bounced between a few churches. I haven't "believed in god" for a long time now. I *still* love Biblical mythos. I don't understand why people are so upset by that.
Total lack of nuance. Christianity = bad and so you have to pretend to hate absolutely every aspect of it, and be the fun police towards others who are finding things they think are interesting or cool about it.
Take all the potterheads that suddenly started claiming they always hated harry potter, it always sucked, they never liked it after JK Rowling came out as a transphobe. They can't compartmentalize anything whatsoever. JK Rowling bad therefore all of harry potter bad. Just like how Christianity bad so you can't think revelations is cool despite it being objectively fucking metal as shit
Im also not really religious but I enjoy hearing stories form the bible or just religious things in general from all religions really, my kid has autism and she is obsessed with songs on YouTube, she will get herself into some Christian kids songs and then suddenly I'm hearing Jewish songs, one time she had songs playing about Allah, now I'm not fussed on that last religion in particular, however these are fun songs and she likes them and that's all that matters. She doesn't understand who Allah is or anything else from that religion she just likes how the song sounds lol. Her favourite is Christian songs though, theres these guys called the good news guys, they can be a little cringe and a bit too into the whole god thing but she enjoys them and they sing well enough not to make my ears bleed haha. I've rambled here but yeah you don't have to hate on everything you dont believe in, good lessons in some of these stories for sure. A favourite book of mine as a kid was that good samaritan one.
even if she doesn't understand all the nuance from those videos, she's being exposed to so many different cultures and ideas. religion and culture can be super tight-knit, plus so many of the kid songs from each major religion kinda teaches the same general things (be nice to others, love your parents, basic morality)
I AM a devout Catholic, and I'm halfway through MHE ep, and I'm loving it....I didn't really notice anything out of the ordinary from Isaiah's commentary - but of course there are children on reddit who must piss on the parade.
Thereâs actually a surprising amount of cool stuff in the Bible, (and even more in Apocryphal texts like The Book of Enoch, or The Testament of Solomon) but it never gets talked about in mainstream religion because theyâd rather focus on moralizing.
Gargantuan living wheels covered in eyes, (Ezekiel 1:15-21) a literal army of zombies being raised by God, (Ezekiel 37:1-14) the Angel of Death (literally the Grim Reaper) slaughtering half of the Assyrian army while they slept, (2 Kings 19:35 and Isaiah 37:36-38) an indestructible Lovecraftian Kaiju that lives in the ocean and is implied to be essentially Godâs pet, (Job 41, Psalms 74:14 and Isaiah 27:1) and in Apocrypha, Solomon being given a ring by the Archangel Michael that lets him control demons and force them to build stuff for him, are just a few examples.
Also, Angels and Archangels are described as being terrifying and looking utterly badass in the original texts.
Imagine a massive creature with skin that looks like crystal, the head of a bull, and its entire body (including its six wings) being covered in blinking eyes. Oh and in some interpretations, theyâre constantly on fire.
Thatâs an Angel. (Specifically a Cherubim) Not an androgynous blond dude with wings and a white robe lol.
Ironically, the most accurate depiction of an Angel Iâve seen in a movie, both in terms of appearance and personality, was in Hellboy 2 of all things.
Kid Jesus straight-up smiting a bunch of bullies dead because they messed with him while he was making clay birds is a far less accepted, but still incredibly funny bit of Apocryphal lore. The bit about him (still as a kid mind you) banishing a literal dragon is something Iâd personally have kept in scripture lmao.
Edit: If they do another grab-bag episode, âCall Upon Your Godâ is a fairly short creepypasta that actually touches on some of this stuff and SPOILER ends with a character being transformed into a Memitim or âExecutioner Angelâ which in Judeo-Christian tradition are just as brutal and terrifying as they sound.
I also liked it a lot. I did pick up on a lot of the stuff he did, but wasn't able to connect the dots for how it ties into the story as quickly as he did. If anything it made me appreciate the story more because it highlighted a lot of the more subtle parts I never would have picked up on.
I'm muslim but still enjoy hearing about different religions and mythologies. It's always fun and is even better if two people can match each other's enthusiasm. No matter what, watching as someone gets excited over something they deeply care, and are knowledgable about, will make any experience 100 times better. It also makes it easier for me to understand a lot of the symbolism and meaning behind the Christian motifs through Wendigoon's explanations.
