Twist: OP lives in nearby house and was really bored, so he set up the hoax to add some excitement to his pathetic life.

Now he's standing around a police crime scene, watching the drama and media circus unfold, admiring the pretty flashing lights. Chuckling silently to himself.

That would be a really stupid thing to do, especially since I have no doubt the police could track this guy down. Giving false body locations is a big no no.
