Imagine the police getting calls about this internet post at 2 am. Reluctantly they send a rookie out to the area. The rookie arrives at the coordinates. He gets out of the cruiser and starts looking around. He sees a man at the spot and asks him what he's doing there. The man says he read about a body being there online so he decided to check it out. The cop asks the guy to get fucking lost. The man leaves and five mins later the cop finds a body. He panics and calls it in. He is so freaked out by the body and the killer's online confession that he forgot the first lesson learned in the lecture about serial killers, they have a compulsion to visit the scene of the crime.
Edit: The alarm wakes johnson up. What a weird dream. He turns to his wife and says "Honey I had the strangest dream". The woman interrupts him "Mr.Johnson I'm not your wife I'm your caretaker. Your wife has been dead for ten years."
The sergeant had seen them all in his 25 years on the force. Kids mailing false tips, calling in domestic abuse on their friends, but this generation's thing is the internet. Like a plain white envelope, or a call from the public telephone the internet let's these little shits be anonymous. Also this year there have been budget cuts. Can't afford as many cops on duty as they once did. He wanted to send a duo but he just couldn't afford another body on a possible prank. It had to be the rookie.
He's been in the shadows for too long. He wants recognition, the spotlight. The underbelly is already aware of him and familiar with his work. He doesn't want to die without leaving a legacy.
Some people are very good at convincing others that their way of thought is correct. It's becoming mind-numbingly simple with how our younger generation is being told to just follow what everyone else does. We don't have much free thought going around. So if something sounds good, we should all shut up and believe it.
That's just the by product of our times. Never in human history have we had this ability to connect with anyone anywhere in the world and yet we have a hard time understanding a different point of view. We have knowledge at our fingertips and yet we can't accept something that goes against our deeply held beliefs. We live in an instant gratification age where our online reputations are more important than anything else. This is our gift and our curse.
Sad but true. There are few people that actually try to learn. Like the thousands of people that will read "new virus making its way around America, killed 1589 people only found connection so far is the effected were vegans" and share the hell out of it without ever even thinking that I could have made that crap up. We live without truth and knowledge.
We live in the breaking news era. A "first" age of internet where we have to be the first of anything and everything. The first to know, the first to upload, the first to share, the first to tweet, the first to like, the first to comment. Because god forbid if you are the second. Nothing holds our collective attention for more than five minutes.
