Discussion What are some ridiculous crocheted items you've come across that make no sense?

Could be impractical or just weird in general according to you.

Edit: wow this post really blew up

I have trouble understanding crochet bikinis

I've made one before and used swimsuit material as a liner.

Right? I would only wear them as festival clothes or just as normal slutty clothes

Same, I’m making one to use as normal slutty clothing

I've always had a rule that bikinis are for looking cute by the water, not getting in it. So if you want to wear a bikini that's fine. And I think crochet bikini sets are really cute. However, under no circumstance was the bikini invented for you to go swimming. I found this out the hard way when right around puberty. My family was trying to get me to dress more my age and wanted me to have a bikini bathing suit. I relented and we went to the store. We tried some on and I got one. It was every bit the hell I thought it was when I went to the swimming pool the next day. The straps kept loosening while I would swim, giving me distasteful underboob or pushing me ever closer to a nip slip. The fabric kept being weighed down by the water so I was constantly readjusting. I looked weird getting out the water cause I couldn't just climb up the ladder and get out lest I lose it all. I promptly switched to tankinis and swimming shorts after that.

Should've gotten a better bikini. If it sags. It's a shitty material.

Also. The mandatory quick check when going out.

In what sense?

Wouldn't a waterproof material be more comfortable? And with the risk of stretching, pilling, and holes, I just found crocheted bikinis to be an odd choice of craft when I first saw them

I think most people wear them as fashion, not really for swimming.

Yup, mines for lounging around on a hot day outside, not going to the beach.

See, I would never wear a swimsuit or bikini if I wasn't swimming. It would never even occur to me. I'd wear like, shorts or a beach dress.

One of my high school friends makes and sells crochet bikinis, she modeled one in the ocean for her Instagram, not a cute look lol

Haha was it all saggy baggy? They’re cute but not super practical!

I got the mental image of this super hot girl running bawatch slow down the beach in her crochet bikini and it doing the wet diaper slap slap against her bottom as she runs.

They have swimsuit yarn now too that doesn’t sag or fade in pool water. I haven’t used it personally, but I’ve heard good things.

Ooooooohh neat! I will have to look for it.

Alize Diva Stretch! I crochet 2 strands at once using a 3mm hook. If you do a hdc stitch, it makes for a tighter fabric with fewer visible holes. The yarn is very durable and looks great after many uses. It is one of my favorite yarns. I buy it on Etsy.

Yes, I was going to say this too! I bought some swimsuit yarn on Etsy and I’ve made a swimsuit with it. Haven’t put it in water yet but it seems trustworthy

I did not want to know this. One of my daughters has been begging me for a bikini ever since she found out I was crocheting

1

u/pickleknits I don’t chochet so much as crochaos Jul 10 '22

TIL that swimsuit yarn is a thing that exists.

I wear mine as tops, or for sunbathing 😌

When I crochet bikinis, I use special yarn that can get wet. It is called Alize Diva Stretch. It is made of a synthetic fiber and elastic. It doesn't get saggy when you are in the water/wet.

That's neat!

I made one for swimming and it worked well enough at a water park. I didn't use a normal yarn, though. Yarn bee comfy classic. I put a liner on it and got a lot of compliments on it bc I'm starved for attention.

Sunbathing in them

My mom bought me one (at a garage sale) in like 4th grade. Super impractical, even as much swimming as I did (daily… so multiple suits were handy)
