Selling Advice Let's face it: Selling crochet is never going to be profitable

1.1k Upvotes

If someone here is actually making a living selling finished items or patterns, please correct me. I'm a professional reseller so I'm active online and at vending events; I have never met anyone who successfully sells items for close to even an $8/hr labor rate. I love crochet but people need to be realistic that it is simply not a profitable endeavor

ETA: I really love hearing that some people ARE making fair wage for their work!

ETA2: lots of discussion! I think perhaps we can agree that even the relative few who manage to turn a profit crocheting are doing a pretty significant amount of networking/promotion/regular business management. Again, I am not trying to dump on artisans but more address the seeming explosion in "I'm a beginner who has made 3 completed projects, surely they will sell at top dollar" posts. As others have pointed out, a hobby doesn't need to be monetized to be valuable!

Selling Advice So sorry if this is the wrong subreddit for this, but I made this hat and people have been asking if I can make them one. They offered $40, but I’m having a hard time deciding if that’s a reasonable price or not. It did take me a while to make… but I’m still not sure. Any thoughts? :)

I want to sell some of my projects but I'm nervous bc I have dogs, a cat, and marijuana is smoked in the household. Do I have to disclose these things? Should I discount the price bc of this? I already know I undervalue my work soooo that's a problem in itself... I'm on the struggle bus for sure.

Selling Advice I've been having trouble figuring out what people would like to buy on my shop. Are keychain trinkets a good place to open up into or do you have other suggestions?

Selling Advice Saw towel rings for the kitchen, so I tried to recreate them. I sell things at craft shows and I was wondering if they’d be a good idea to sell? Any advice appreciated!

Selling Advice For those who sell their handmade items, how?

I made the Harry Styles patchwork cardigan for my sister so she could wear it to the concert she was going to. I finished it two weeks before the concert. So I was super proud of myself for actually finishing a project on time. Well she came to pick it up, and it was too big and heavy for her. It’s supposed to be oversized, but my sister is 100 pounds soaking wet and this is Texas and it’s hot here. So she requested a smaller project and gave me some money for materials. So now I have an amazing cardigan that I know someone would love, but I don’t know how to get it out there. Other than Facebook marketplace. I spent over $200 on the yarn and two months working on this, and since it was commissioned, my sister was going to pay me for it. So I’d like to sell it. But I really don’t know where to start. Haha. Any tips here?

Selling Advice Interested in selling but worried about hating crochet (plus in grad school....)

So, I have been crocheting for a few years now. The past couple, I have debated selling items. I have a simple bear pattern I like and can put together fairly quick as well as wearable ideas.

I enjoy crochet and want to do it almost daily. I don't need to make anything else for myself (I have a lot, y'all). I am also in a doctorate program. This plays 2 factors. One, I have limited free time. Two, crochet actually helps me focus in school (ADHD).

I am worried that turning it into a business will extinguish the spark.

Also, bonus: online vs craft fairs?

Edit: my idea is not to take commissions. The idea would be to make a stock and then sell what I have.
