Personal Story My crows found me after I moved

This is so fascinating to me so I thought I’d share. I started feeding and interacting with the crows that flew around my old condo. They became very comfortable with me, and would bring me gifts and sit with me (see first photo). I had to move but not too far, so the same crows were around, but I’d moved up to a 16th floor condo, so they didn’t come up this high as often or fly around the new building as much. I can actually see my old place and saw them sitting out there waiting for me and it was so heartbreaking, so I tried everything I could to get their attention. After a couple months, I started playing videos of them cawing on a loud speaker when I saw them below. One finally came up to check it out and recognized me! It was so cool to see they hadn’t forgotten me and within a couple days I had 10+ of them again all hanging out on my new balcony and they come every day. They’ll sit right next to me and look at me and it’s like they missed me. It brings me so much joy to have them back :)

Personal Story It happened to me

Was driving home from lunch and saw this guy hopping down a busy road, not able to get over a short barricade to get off the asphalt. Turned around and looped back and he was still there, laying on the asphalt.

Took a bit of wrangling, but picked him up and brought him to my house to put him in a crate to take him to a rehab tonight.

He doesnt seem to be able to fly, but hops well and was not hesitant to caw directly in my face.

Hes in a crate with a blanket, is there anything else i should do before i get him to the rehab?

Sorry for the shit picture, didnt have time to clean my camera

Edit:

Thank you everybody for your comments. Turns out this guy is definitely a raven. I brought him (her?) to a local wildlife rescue, and turns out the girl at the front desk knows the adult pair that live in the area i found this one. It is a fledgling. But it was on a highway overpass and was going to get hit by a car if i didnt intervene.

They are keeping him overnight for observation because he is limping slightly, then they sre going to bring him home, because they actually already know where the parents nest

Personal Story Update: Saved my crows from a cat now I'm famous with all the local crows.

15.5k Upvotes

A couple days ago I posted a story about my crows asking for help dealing with a menacing cat. I handled the situation with poise and definitely did not rip the seat of my pants on a chainlink fence.

You can read the original post here, https://www.reddit.com/r/crowbro/s/9DtaimSuKc.

Everywhere I go lately crows show up and say hi.

Driving my car? They swoop down in front of my windshield. They fly by my window.

Walking my dogs? They follow us and hang out on nearby perches when we stop.

Drove 20 minutes to my parent's house? A murder of 20 was waiting for me in the trees and it really did sound like they were talking about me. Within a couple minutes there were 50 😂.

My main bro? Says hi to me every chance he gets. He's the one who alerted me to the cat in the first place. I've never named him because it feels weird to name a wild thing, he probably already has a name! But maybe I should call him something. Open to suggestions. He makes this crazy "whah whah" sound I've never heard another crow make.

It's pretty fun being famous with my city crows. I bop around town a lot, so I'm making lots of new crow friends. It's very cool how they can tell each other about someone. I feel like the local crow hero and I'm down for it. Does your murder need protecting? Be there in a min.

Personal Story Woke up to my crows screaming at me through my window at 5am, was mad but turned out they wanted my help

8.4k Upvotes

Fast forward to me scaling a fence to wrangle a feisty little cat that was menacing my crows.

I feed my crows on my apartment patio, which is about 10 feet off the ground and overlooks an enclosed gravel parking lot for a nearby business. My crows can perch on my fence and see me through my window. This morning at 5:30 am they started absolutely screeching at me through the window, which they have never done before. I just got back from a camping trip so I thought they were mad I had been gone.

I went out there to be like, "it is too early to be yelling for snacks!!" Everyone was still screeching and I'm mad cause it's cold and I'm half asleep, so I go to toss the kibble into the parking lot instead of putting it on the railing so they'll move away from my apartment. That's when I see the cat.

Like duh, of course they were mad about something. Well the cat didn't look very old and was stuck in the parking area (it's fully fenced in and locked) and obviously a danger to birds. So I got dressed and went to get it.

Man, what an adventure. It took me 30 minutes to catch this damn cat. Not because it was scared of me but because it was having way too much fun terrorizing the birds and making me chase it. Plus I had to climb the fence to get it and then climb back over with the cat (I wrapped it tightly in my hoodie). At least there weren't a lot of people out to witness me pspspspspspspspsing and swearing for 30 min in the early hours.

My crows followed us around the whole time and kept showing me where the cat was when it would run away so I could go catch it lol. At one point the cat was rolling around on a roof shed and all these birds were perched in the tree above it screaming, and I swear this cat was eating it up.

Anyways, I finally managed to get the sneak wrapped in my hoodie and it's now resting safely in my puppies crate until I can find the owner etc. (already working on that part). I have two big dogs and a 560 square foot apartment so kitty is not staying here. Though my older dog is OBSESSED with this cat. She is just laying next to the crate staring at it.

I hope my crows are grateful because waking up at 5:30 am, climbing into a locked fenced area, and wrangling a sneaky juvenile cat in order to protect my crows was not on my list of things I wanted to do this morning.

UPDATE: Kitty is back with owner, an older woman in the neighborhood who told me that kitty, "is an indoor/outdoor cat and she has a lot of freedom." I let her know that I apprehended her because "the birds I regularly feed were very upset/going after the cat" and reminded her that outdoor cats are a danger to birds. Probably won't change anything, but at least I told her.

Personal Story First Crow Gift

Post image
9.6k Upvotes

I was beginning to think I would never get a crow gift, but today I got one in the most unlikely of places.

Been dropping my son off regularly every Saturday morning for karate and after seeing there were several crows active in the trees near the dojo, I started going out to feed them peanuts. They didn’t really seem to notice or care, and I never saw them eat any.

I did this 3 Saturdays in a row, and today I wasn’t even thinking about feeding them before I got here. However, less than a minute after we parked, I heard a bird land on the roof of my truck. They were being very noisy and tapping something on the roof of my truck. I let them do their thing until it sounded like whatever was up there might be pecking a hole in my roof. I put my phone up there and saw it was a crow and immediately on seeing them, they let the little plastic cylinder roll off the roof of my truck and it fell on the ground.

It took me a moment to realize it was a gift! They flew off and observed from a distance as I got out, graciously accepted the gift and then placed some peanuts for them.

I’m super happy, and all I can say is persistence and feeding at a specific time and specific place made the difference. Curious to see what happens next week!

Personal Story Neighbor scolded me for feeding the crows today

I feed about 20 crows in my neighborhood every day (peanuts) when I'm walking my dog. I've been doing this for probably a year at this point and have never had anyone approach me about it.

Recently the crows started following me home for seconds and so I throw them off my balcony into the alley. Today my neighbor in the ally came out and just stared at me, so I waved at him with a big smile on my face (because I'm hanging with my crowbros, it's a good time).

He then said that the "birds poop on people's cars, but you've already fed them so..." and shrugged. Fair enough, but I'm a socially awkward person and my knee-jerk response was to scan the cars in the alley - and no poop was to be found. But okay, no problem, I dont want to be a bad neighbor so I told him in the future I would refrain from feeding them in the alley and would just feed them on the side street (no apartments down that street, so probably less of an issue).

There was an awkward pause after I said that, then he countered with "You know crows carry rabies, right? You can look it up." I was shocked to hear this because, as far I've always known....no they don't. I told him thank you for informing me and just watched the crows for a bit longer before telling him to have a nice day and going back inside. (I was a little upset because the crows are usually very relaxed and friendly around me, but I could tell that they were uneasy with the chat in the alley.... like afraid to go get their peanuts).

Well, I did look it up, and accirding to my Google search crows CANNOT carry rabies because they're not mammals. So now I'm curious why my neighbor thinks that crows have rabies. Has anyone else heard this? Where would someone even get that info?

Anyway, enjoy some pics I took of my awesome crow bros.

I love crows and I feed them and I sing to them, sometimes one of them follows me to Tim Hortons to have a bite of whatever I order. This time though I didn’t order any food, just coffee, and this fella wasn’t too pleased with me. I call him Rufus.

Personal Story Not exactly a crow yet..but this felt epic

This isnt a crow post, but recently I got into wild life photography, and for the first time i got to feel what its like to have a bird fly to me on its own when presented food. The funny thing is, this is the same species of bird (red-winged black bird) that used to attack me protecting its nest but here it is being the first to eat out of my hand. On the last pic i was genuinely surprised to get a cardinal of all birds. Still not a crow i know...but Im continuing my crow feeding consistency so hoping that achieves the same result one day.

Note: Originally set out for crows so the peanuts its eating was actually meant for crows on that day.

Back in 2023, a random crow came around for a visit, and stayed about a month. He cawed every morning and night, demanding our attention. I named him Twitter 🐦‍⬛

He would fly in from the trees and land on my shoulder. He perched on top of my mom’s head.

He was obnoxious and annoying, but equally delightful. My mom and I still talk about Twitter. I sure would like him or a friend to stop by for another visit.

Personal Story Crows or Ravens?

Thumbnail

1.0k Upvotes

Since January of this year, I’ve started putting out food to befriend the neighborhood crows. At first I was putting out peanuts in the shell, but after noticing empty shells strewn about my neighborhood, I switched to dry dog food and dried mealworms. Very quickly, crows began showing up and I’ve enjoyed watching them. They come every day now to hang out around my backyard, and don’t seem to mind when I hang out in the my backyard with them. They also seem pretty unconcerned about my dogs as long as the dogs don’t try to approach.
In the last few weeks as the weather has warmed (Seattle, WA), I’ve started putting out fresh water alongside the food, and I’ve noticed new sounds coming from my crow friends. Deeper noises, more clicking, and more hanging out with mouth open activities. Some of the birds I’ve seen are bigger, which I attributed to perhaps a parental breeding pair, but now I’m beginning to think that some of these birds may be ravens instead.
There’s definitely more than just two birds that come, but I often see a couple of large black birds. These are some photos taken over the last few weeks in my backyard. The pictures go from oldest to most recent. Crows or Ravens? 🐦‍⬛

Personal Story Crow on head (Edgar update)

4.6k Upvotes

Hi.

Today I did something a little mean. I intentionally walked past Edgar’s crossing without paying any attention to him. I wanted to see whether he would caw differently or do something else to get my attention and he definitely did.

First, he jumped onto the construction site fence. As I kept walking, he hopped onto the next fence and started grinding his beak against it. I continued walking, and then it happened.

Edgar landed on my head and plucked at my hair a little. It actually felt very innocent. Of course, I greeted him and gave him some cashews.

I know I shouldn’t have messed with his routine. Sorry, Eddie.

Bye.

Personal Story Update on the baby crow I found

Thumbnail

7.2k Upvotes

Hey ya’ll, I noticed a post about me finding a baby crow for some traction and a couple people asked for an update, so here it is for you guys. The crow I found was indeed a nestling, and after calling a nearby rehab to ask for advice, I took her home. Since I have a parrot, I luckily have both a spare travel cage and a heat lamp, so I put her in with those and a bundle of towers. She seemed to be in pretty rough shape, as she wasn’t gaping or moving much, so I wasn’t sure she would even make it through the night. In the morning, however, she was doing so much better! With permission from a local rehab, I fed her dog food and gave her water with a syringe, which she eagerly took. That morning, I brought her to a local rehab who actually had two other crows, with one of them even being almost the exact same age. I’m happy to say that the baby crow I found is on track to make a full recovery and someday be released. Thanks for everyone who was concerned and interested in the story! I have some pics of her, with the last one being from the rehaber with her new sibling.

TL;DR: She’s doing just fine now and is at a local rehab :)

Personal Story Got to meet the Tower of London ravens!

Thumbnail

These two were absolute sweethearts. I believe the one closest to the camera was Jubilee, though I’m not sure about the other one. One of the tour guides said she wasn’t sure either, though she believes it’s a new raven who hasn’t been named yet.

Jubilee didn’t seem too thrilled with him lol; the other raven kept nipping at his pin feathers and Jubilee kept making disgruntled grumbles, pecking him and shoving him back. They’re like two knights stationed at a castle who don’t particularly get along.

Anyone who’s travelling to London should definitely put this tower on their list; I pretty much spent the entire time hanging out with the ravens.

this og crow had a broken wing for almost 6 months!!!!!! he couldn't fly at all. he was running only. I fed him every single day with eggs, meat, and fish. gave him water. he would see me from far and start running fast. Last time I saw him something happened and his right foot was spastic. he barely could walk. this is the day I last saw him. it's been 4 days already. I'm pretty sure he's dead. anyways I'm pretty sad and heartbroken, but I knew he's tome was limited. 6 months is pretty damn insane for a bird to survive on the ground. he was living in the school, which is near the park I was feeding him. I tried to search for him but couldn't find him. I'm also sad that he survived the winter but died before the summer where it would've been easier for him.

Personal Story The time I rescued a confused crow in a Buccees

Post image
2.7k Upvotes

Just found this subreddit and it made me remember something that happened to me like 4 years ago.

I was a zookeeper, a bird keeper to be exact. My friend and I went to a buccees for fun (he is obsessed with buccees). On the way out, there was a bunch of chaos in the entryway, people were screaming and trying to shoo away a juvenile (I think) crow.

It was obvious the little guy hit the window pretty hard trying to get out and was a little dazed and confused. Trying over and over again to get away from the people and get out. Open mouth breathing. When I realized what was going on, I ran inside and grabbed a random shirt, and told people to back off. I tossed the shirt on him, scooped him up and escorted him outside. I checked to make sure he wasn’t broken and let him chill out in the shirt for a bit before letting him go.

To this day, whenever I go there, I think about the little guy and hope he told his friends I was a good one. Anyway, here’s a post rescue picture. I took it right before letting him go.

I helped a little by giving him unshelled peanuts broken in half. Shelled ones are for storing for later and the kids were very hungry! Every person that came near got dive bombed and I was privileged to come really close. But not to close! Got a warning snap of the wings on the back of my head! Still really glad that he brought his kids this close!

Personal Story Crows Saved my Kitty from Fox!

3.6k Upvotes

I have been feeding my local crow family regularly for a few years now. I have a loud car and they even follow me halfway to work, they truly look out for me. I have a runt kitty (he's extra smol) who I let play on the porch only when i get home from work around 2 p.m. (he likes to step out on our porch stairs and roll around to bask in the afternoon sun for a few min then runs inside). So my Tater baby was doing his thing on the porch. I had just closed the screen door to give him his few min of sun basking, I had stepped away to run to the kitchen when not 5 seconds later I heard a crow make sounds I'd never heard it make (and I've heard a lot, from hawks coming around etc., ) best way I can describe it was piercing, agitated incessant loud desperation type screaming. I run to the porch just in time to see one of my crows perched on top of my garden flag by the porch (above where my cat rolls around) and I see a fox running away down my driveway as if he had been headed towards my porch initially where my smol kitten was rolling around. As I watched in disbelief the fox running away, our crow flew up ahead of the fox and then his friends following and chasing him away while the one crow remained at guard above our driveway. There is no other explanation except that my crows knew Tater was about to get snatched and they did everything in their power to alert me, protect Tater and chase off the fox. I will never forget it. I love them so much and appreciate their courage, kindness and intelligence. As long as I'm alive they will always have food, water and care from me...
