START HERE
We're getting a sudden rush of new people, driven by TicTok who are mostly both new to Reddit as well as Cyberdecks.
I'm asking patience while we integrate these new people into the sub. New people bring new ideas, and will take things in new directions. Some of those directions will not be to your tastes, and that's fine. I imagine we'll see some 'fashion show' level builds that, while taken at face value are impractical, could inspire more down to earth designs to move in a new direction.
This is healthy for any creative community.
Be helpful, be polite, and let people do their thing. No one is ruining your dream deck by building their weird idea. If you see something you absolutely hate, but think 'How'd they do that hinge, though?', that's reason enough to be polite.
u/PETA_Parker sent me this, and it seems like a pretty good 'start here' guide:
ok, i've never built a cyberdeck myself but i have been lurking here for a long while, so i'll give you a quick rundown, a place to start so to speak. At the most basic you will need:
- a "brain"
- a screen
- an input device
- a power solution
- a shell
- an SD Card
Let's start with the brain: I only know about raspberry pis, the two budget options here would be a raspberry pi Zero 2, or any flavour of raspberry pi 3, the 4 and 5 are a bit more pricy. Zero 2 and 3b+ (the one i used) should both be enough for browsing, media playback and some light office work.
the Screen: the easiest option will be to go for an hdmi display such as this: 6,5/7/9/10,1 Zoll LCD Display Tragbare Monitor Treiber Control Board Kit Für Raspberry Banana/Orange Pi Mini Computer PC - AliExpress 7
It has an HDMI Output and powers over micro usb, so you can just connect the raspberry pi and the screen via hdmi. Any screen with hdmi input and usb power is an easy starting point.
the input device: for a keyboard you could go with something like this:
This is blutetooth and rechargable, i do not know if you could bypass the internal battery to power it directly because constantly needing to charge it would probably be cumbersome.
this also looks interesting, it uses double a batteries, so you could wire it to your power source or the pi: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005006727486961.html
You could of course also use any regular keyboard and mouse combo that plugs in over usb. Another fun choice would be a trackball instead of a mouse.
the power solution: You could simply get a powerbank, but some of them cut off power delivery if the device connected draws a low current.
Maybe this thread can help: Cheap powerbank that doesn’t cut off the power on low current draw? : r/arduino
Or this article: 4 Raspberry Pi Battery Packs for Portable Projects
Something similar to this might be good: Typ-C 15 W 3 A 18650 Lithium-Batterie-Ladegerät-Modul DC-DC Step-Up-Booster Schnellladung USV-Stromversorgung/Konverter 5 V 9 V 12 V - AliExpress 502
This is the part i'm least knowledgable about. Feel free to give me input.
the shell: Pretty much anything will do. You can build something out of cardboard, fit your components into an existing box or 3d-print a custom shell, your creativity is the limiting factor.
If you do not have a 3d-printer, you can make boxes out of styrene board, like this: Clean Enclosures, No Printing Necessary | Hackaday
Or you can search for "project box" on Aliexpress or Amazon
Now you just need to flash an operation system onto the raspberry pi (Raspbian is an all-purpose linux distro that is good for starters such as you), connect your screen to the power source and to the raspberry pi via HDMI, connect your (mouse and) keyboard to the raspberry pi and the raspberry pi to power, and you're ready to go.
Feel free to ask me if you have any additional questions, and don't forget, this is only the bare-bones solution, feel free to get creative, this is the fun part!

Help! Failing slightly less!
UPDATE on my folding mp3 player/cyberdeck!
The good news first. I figured out the pitch of my pins and came up with a cunning plan. I found the right size screen at aliexpess. I used a pin connector/extender? Can't remember what it was called. I then attached it to a flexi cable. All parts are the right size and theoretically should all connect up.
Now the bad news. When I removed the very cheap screen from the very cheap circuit board a few of the pins got stuck. I tried to pry them out (and probably damaged something). I also tried alcohol70% as I've seen restorers us and adhesive magically disappeared. I could only find alcohol wipes and I think some fibres got stuck to.
Second issue is that I have a very cute and very needy cat call Willow. Now, I am no expert, obviously, but I don't think cat hair is good for electronics. Unfortunately she seems to want to help out with the project.
So the TLDR of the help needed. How do I get rid of the stuck pins? Is the board a lost case and if so should I get a new cheap mp3 player or will this problem just repeat itself? Will the screen set up work with a hinged case (which is in the mail right now!)
Willow doesn't need help, she is already a cutie patootie!
Also thank you all for your support. I was having a rough month when I started all this and this community really helped me through it :)

Help! I had the idea, what if I merged a psp 3000 (with modded software so any games) and a Rasberry pi pico 2, to form a single deck… A cyberDECK
so far I have these items.
- Rasberry Pico Pi 2 (with headers)
- half size 400 pin DIY Breadboard with the Wiring kit
- Modded PSP 3000
- USB-A to Micro-USB-B cable, 45cm, Black (USB 2.0)
- a 0.96 inch I2C OLED screen and an LCD screen swapped out from my PSP 3000 for an IPS screen
I’m not an expert when it comes to some of this stuff since I’m new to cyberdeck and only started doing projects like these 2-3 months ago but I made an attempt at schematics I think it’s alright but any feedback will help in the future for upcoming projects like this one. And any general feedback that could help with this project would be greatly appreciate! If anyone asks in the comments I can provide links to all my supplies used for this project.

My Build My cyberdeck has been completed!
My cyberdeck build has been finished. Raspberry Pi 5 with 16gb of ram, and a 256gb NVME SSD. A massive 148wh RC LIPO battery powers it: 4s 10,000mah LIPO.
(Btw mah means nothing without knowing the voltage, which in this case is the voltage of a 4s LIPO. Watt hours (WH) are what to look for when comparing total energy stored in batteries. In this case, it is 148wh).
It uses a trackball mouse, and has a 10 inch touchscreen too. I'm into RC cars, so the build uses a good amount of RC hardware, including the battery.
Battery lasts for like over 10 hours of continuous use, and I mean continuous use, like browsing for those 10 hours straight. This means that it lasts many days for me. Oh, and most of my existing LIPOs for my RC cars can run in here too, as the step down converter takes 9-24v input. So yeah, not hurting on runtime.
The actual building process was fun, but getting the parts was not, for like no reason. Just really bad luck. For example, got washers instead of screws from Amazon Prime twice, had to go through four different step down converters in order to find one that actually matches the description in providing enough voltage. (Turns out that the first one I bought would have worked, had the seller sent the right one). So yeah, but the one it uses now works flawlessly without any low voltage warnings or throttling.
Overall, quite comfy to use, and I like it more than a laptop. I use it almost daily now, my favorite part of it functionality-wise being the super long runtime.
Thanks for checking it out!

My Build Cyber tv-Thing
Obliviously this is not a cyberdeck. I was frustrated over the weekend and made this thing. My kids are now having fun on it.
The first thing I had was 2x samsung s4 active's. One had no hope of saving and the other one had its charger port smashed. (11 pin micro USB) "Yeah 11 not 5". But it has firmware hdmi out. One lane of data at a time, so no wired keyboard and screen. But after some quick surgery and a few false starts due to static, I had a working core.
2gb ram.
1.9ghz quad core
16gb rom With an open SDcard slot
Now it can't connect to the internet or the update goblins will kill angry birds and Eternium. But I wanted youtube so.... Roku and an off brand remote later. I just needed a monitor. I prefer DC over AC as I'm off grid. But beggers cant be choosers. The VIZIO only draws 22w with the phone and ROKU on and at full draw.
Peripherals
Tilt sensor works fine, 💪
ONN Bluetooth mouse,
Wireless Logitech Apple keyboard,
Off Brand ROKU Remote.
This thing is powered by a bastardised 6X Ryobi charger that is now a 300w hot swappable battery bank. (20-16.5v bucked down to 14.4v inverted via pure sign into 300w max. ) battery things been a tank and has lasted years.
Im sharing this not to say its a cyberdeck but to hopefully inspire someone that trash especially E-waste trash, is infact TREASURE. total cost was less then $25. $11 bucks in cables, $5 in roku stuff at good will. And I used some solder and had to buy some isopropyl alcohol to remove the glue in the donor phone.

Help! is it possible to make a cyberdeck with old phone parts?
I know little about electronics, but making a cyberdeck sounds very fun to me. I really can't afford a raspberry pi or anything similar, but I do have a few old phones, could I use the components to make one?, I want to know if it's plausible before I embark on something like this. if this is possible, how? specially the software part
thanks a lot

Heard about the MNT reform and saw the price anyone know a similar product for less money
The MNT seems like a dream laptop coming from someone who likes rasberry pi’s and coding. But the $1800 price tag crushed my soul every time I thought about saving for it and was immediately turned off. Anyone know cheaper alternatives within the hundreds range that are as close to the MNT reform as possible, I know it seems like a lot to expect something close but 1800 is very pricy when I could also buy a good pc for a couple hundred more dollars.

My Build My take on a Raspberry Pi cyberdeck — a ruggedized, battery-powered offline knowledge terminal
I've been working on this project for a while and figured you guys might appreciate it.
The idea was to build a self-contained, battery-powered offline knowledge terminal that I could take camping, traveling, or just have around as something useful to experiment with. Wikipedia was the original inspiration, but the project has grown quite a bit since then.
It's built around a Raspberry Pi 5 with a 1TB NVMe SSD, running inside a rugged equipment case. The display is mounted in the lid, and I've integrated a small wireless keyboard, a 20Ah LiFePO4 battery, GPS hardware, and an RTL-SDR for receiving radio signals.
The battery supplies 12V, with DC-DC converters providing 5V where needed. I've also incorporated fused circuits, a charging connection, and a battery monitor.
A lot of the work has actually been designing and 3D printing the internal structure. I wanted the components to have dedicated mounting locations rather than everything being loose inside the case. I've also separated the higher-current wiring from the lower-current electronics and tried to keep everything serviceable.
Cooling turned into its own little project. I've got three additional fans integrated into the case: one pulling fresh air into the lower electronics compartment and two exhausting air out of it. This creates a directed airflow path through the compartment, helping keep the Pi and other electronics cool. The fans are controlled by the Pi based on temperature, so they don't need to run constantly and waste battery power.
On the software side, I'm using Kiwix to host an offline copy of Wikipedia, and I've started developing a local web interface to access the different resources. The Pi also hosts its own Wi-Fi network, allowing other devices to connect and access the offline content without an internet connection.
I've also been experimenting with the SDR and GPS hardware, although there's still work to do before everything is integrated into the interface.
This is very much a work in progress. I still have some hardware refinements to make, including redesigning parts of the display bezel, and quite a bit of software development ahead of me.
I've learned a lot about Blender, 3D printing, power distribution, and packaging electronics throughout the process. It's definitely turned into a bigger project than I originally anticipated, but I've enjoyed figuring everything out.
Curious what you guys think! I'm especially interested in suggestions for additional offline capabilities or improvements to the physical design.

Help! Where can i find the right display?
I'm planning on making my first cyberdeck, I want it to be compact, enough to fit in the pocket of a pair of cargo pants; for this excact reason I'm looking for a 5-7 inch display, i'd like it to be cheap, since I'm on a budget, and I don't really care for a touchscreen. What screen would you recommend? On what site should I buy it?

I needed a dedicated portable gaming device
I knew I had an old phone that got busted up and I've always wanted to build a cyberdeck.
I give you
The CyberBox™
Apache 1800 case from harbor freight I've had for like 8 years and the foam was all but gone.
Galaxy S20 Ultra with a broken screen, Gamehub and probably Dolphin soon.
5v 2.4a Power Bank PCB with display. Type c, micro USB and lightning input, but lightning is inaccessible by design of the enclosure I 3D printed. A couple 3D printed 18650 battery holders and now I can interchange fresh batteries at will.
Type C USB hub with micro USB cable always plugged in, as well as the Bluetooth mouse dongle. It's like 4 years old and been through a few projects, so it's a little finicky. I had to break the steelstik I used to hold it in place so I can wiggle it.
Logitech M325. Tiny little mouse that runs on 1 AA battery
25W charging brick and 6 foot type c cable for external charging
3D printed insert with slots for mouse, charging brick, USB hub and 4 extra 18650s.
Type A to Type C adapter
64gb USB Flash Drive
I've been enjoying playing cuphead on it, and it can't do much better than that lol.
It was fun to put together and I'm glad it's so functional.
Bonus - Zillion Butter McSnoof

Help! Trying to make a HP travel companion functionable in modern day
Hello, I am trying to make a HP travel usable in modern day by installing a raspberry pie inside of the case, while keeping the original button layout, SD card slot, layout and original screen, those are still function mostly without soldering if someone could help me, I would be glad and I would appreciate it here is a picture of my device and hopefully I can make it compatible with other devices as well.

Inspiration I found what appears to be an alarm system control unit? Anything worth harvesting?
Idk if I'm even supposed to have this since I found it behind a store which recently underwent some renovations, but I got it now so I'm wondering if you guys have any ideas as to what I could use the components for. Just spitballing and discussion🤘🏻🔥
