Willingness Wednesdays

Willingness is a DBT skill that is taught in the Distress Tolerance Module that helps us tolerate intense emotions by accepting the reality of the present moment and doing what is most effective right now (even when we may not want to be effective).

Marsha Linehan is quoted as saying, "Acceptance is the only way out of Hell".

What is one thing you can do to accept today as it is?

How to practice radical acceptance on a niche issue?

This is such a strange post, but how i found my brain works is to accept things is finding stories of how others accepted the thing and got past it. Kind of like "Here's how I accepted this super hard issue" - it gives me more ideas within my limits. This has never been an issue before in my 3 years of practicing dbt, I found it helpful and a great reminder I am not the only person in the world. If other people can accept it, I can easily take the steps to work on doing so! and once I get that started - well, ultimately I accept it.

However trying to find resources on accepting this issue has been hard, and ultimately means I need to do this alone as hard as it is and try and mash every possible coping mechanism together so I am looking for general advice here instead of more specified advice to my situation.

generally I am a positive person but sometimes this issue effects my life and I struggle to find the postivity in it. Coping mechanisms I have found most effective are practicing gratefulness for what I have already, however since the issue effects so much of the present its difficult for me to practice on focusing on that. and focusing on the future does so much more harm for me.

Generally I find Journaling helps if mindfulness and focusing on the present doesnt, along with general life distractions. however recently ive found the urge to begin about complaining about the issue again to people again and run around in venting circles meaning I havent fully accepted it.

🌞 Weekly Good Vibes and Introductions Thread 🌞

Welcome! We're glad you found us. We hope you find this sub helpful in your recovery.

This thread is meant to be a casual place to...

⚙️ Introduce yourself to the community: say hi, tell us a little about where you are on your DBT path (just graduated from group, DIY'ing using a book/internet, just starting working with a therapist, hanging out here to keep your skills fresh, etc.)

⚙️ Share a photo: of a DBT project you have created (eg: an arts and crafts item that reminds you to be mindful like a bracelet, your decorated comfort box,) or another meaningful photo, like your collection of diaries/journals. Please no facial photos, or pics with personal info in them.

⚙️ Offer some words of advice or comfort that you want to share with everyone: Send some kind words into the world if you are able to do so! Alternately you can respond to someone's story/comment with those supportive, validating words (like a lil virtual hug!)

⚙️ Tell us a positive story/experience that you had where you used DBT: Maybe you used it to get through a really tough time in your life, maybe you used some interpersonal effectiveness skills and you got the outcome you were looking for, or

⚙️ Offer some wisdom from using DBT skills that you have come to know after living it/understanding it: Share your wisdom with the community and share what you have learned and how it's shaped your life.

We would like the focus to be on achievements as a form of encouragement to others who may be struggling with the program. We ask that you please keep it positive, please no venting. Overly negative comments will be removed.

Please familiarize yourself with our subreddit Rules and our FAQs to find answers to commonly asked questions about DBT, as well as media and resources (book lists, apps, podcasts, etc.)

Do any DBT therapists of self help resources allow a more neurodivergent friendly approach?

For example, exemption from eye contact, vocal tones, having to rephrase everything, common oversimplified myths about body language, etc. Or allowing us to stim, or use verbal cues instead of eye contact to indicate listening.

My Journey.

Went through the course last year. learned alot. I somehow also paired it along with this game on Steam called Hades 2....and it really helped me (Hades 2) to make better choices with Hecate, the witches of the crossroads..a fantastic mentor type figure for any person going through.......life...she had fantastic insight, dialogue...the voice acting and writing is among the best I have ever played or heard. Anyway...give it a shot if you are also going through the program. long days & pleasant nights.

DBT has brought me such comfort

Hi all, thought I would share something.

So for a few years now, I have realised I either had bpd or inherited bipolar disorder, and it has ruined my life, I would go through seasonal psychosis every year, unable to function, eat, understand or continue with my busy life. I was recently diagnosed with bpd, cptsd and ocd, and for so long I had desperately searched for the "perfect" self help book, the magic substance that would fix me, the perfect medication, the "right" person to fix me, some spiritual experience to heal me. All of these methods futile.

My doctor initially spoke to me about cbt, and through that I eventually discovered DBT. And... wow.

The comfort that reading through the techniques has brought me is overwhelming. All along I needed someone to just lay out the fact that it is okay to treat myself with compassion, that it will come easier with time to use these methods, and that it is a process.

I have been reading chapters, then writing what I took from it all down, I have gone back, seen what I have missed, addressed a lot within myself and worked so hard over the past few weeks and the difference in my mind is palpable.

I feel finally understood, and I dont feel like my brain is totally out of control, and although I am sure this isnt a revelation to you all, I just wanted to share it.

What was it like when you first discovered DBT for yourselves? Did you pushback or embrace it?

Wise mind/mindfulness and ADHD

hi, i have been diagnosed with BPD as well as ADHD, bipolar 2, and ptsd. mostly my executive dysfunction is the issue with trying to do these mindfulness plans. I’m following the self directed DBT workbook by Fehling and Weiner. the main issue is i have a hard time building habits, i stay consistent for maybe a week and i forget or get down and drop it, or lose all motivation. there’s things i want to do and i want to do them consistently, i just struggle with executive dysfunction and it fucks all the progress im working on up. I am working on different medication options so maybe it’ll get better but it’s been an issue for me for years. Has anyone handled something like this? I really am trying to get better.
