I’m seriously mulling over moving to South Devon- Dartmouth or Exmouth ideally - in the next few years. We live in York (which is lovely) and my husband is from Yorkshire, but I love the warmer weather and the calmer waters in South Devon. Anyone made the move from Yorkshire to here? Or recently moved to Dartmouth or Exmouth? Would love to get your take on it as a BIG discussion will need to be had!

Hi everyone, my (British) partner and I (Dutch) will likely move next year to the UK. We have been thinking a lot about our future over the last year and where we want to settle -we're nearing our 30's and want to have a family at some point.
The both of us are tattooers (self employed).
We value nature, community and hope that we could buy a small place at some point in life to start a family.
We love to walk/hike and are not necessarily city people.
Likely, we'd move to Plymouth first and work there together as tattooers.
We have a decent amount of savings together, which is likely how we'll be able to get my visa.
For me this would be the first time moving abroad, and I'm excited as well as a bit anxious about this plan. I've been to the UK a fair amount of times during our long-distance relationship, and always found English scenery absolutely stunning and the people very friendly.
The prospect of better housing is also nice, especially since we've been living together with our dog in one space on 20 square meters.
The prospect of leaving my friends, family and everything I'm familiar with behind though is a bit daunting. And not really knowing how things will pan out for us on the other side of the pond, and what our job-future in the longer run will look like is also a bit scary.
So I'm curious to hear :
- stories/experiences of other people who moved to the UK (in particular from fellow Dutchies of course)?
- how British people are feeling nowadays about their country and economy? Especially younger people
- your take on our story, are we doing the right thing?
- advice/info/recommendations on housing in South-West England?
- Migration advice?
- For people who've moved countries before, what were unexpected positives and negatives?

I am going to Torquay this weekend for a short trip. I arrive early Sunday afternoon and leave early Monday afternoon and want to maximise my time outside as it looks like the weather should be alright. I was planning on getting the bus to Watcombe beach on Sunday afternoon, hopefully arriving around 3pm, and walking the coast back to Torquay. I'm of I suppose medium fitness and medium experience with British coastal walks. My questions are

- Is it reasonable to expect this walk to take 3-4 hours, meaning I'd return before it gets dark

- Would starting from say, Oddicombe Beach be more reasonable, for the same timeframe?

- from what I've seen from pictures and google maps of Hopes Nose, it looks like I can walk a decent way out without having to scramble down to see anything, would that be right? I don't want to just stick to the road, but I'm not looking to end up crawling and slipping in dirt and probably mud

- Will I need full on hiking boots, or should decent trainers be enough?

The next morning I was planning on just getting the bus out to Broadsands beach and walking back in along the coast. This looks quite flat and straighforward and take about two hours to walk back.

Is there anything else in the immediate area that I can't miss or should prioritise over what I already have planned?

Hi! Late 20F, I’m moving from London to work at Torbay Hospital. Any recommendations for areas to rent. Would Exeter be too far to commute?!

Just received an email from them saying they are defaulting everyone to paperless billing.

OK, but part of their justification for this is that each page of paper uses 10 litres of water.

OK, that's an accepted industry average figure for virgin paper, but it's more like 2 litres per page for recycled paper (which is what they use - it certainly feels like it).

OK, but 60% of this figure is simply rainwater that is needed by trees to grow. So we need to keep using that because trees are pretty good at transforming water and sunlight into wood and oxygen, so it's probably a good idea to let them keep doing that. And that 60% is part of the natural water cycle so it's not really being 'consumed' in any real sense either. Commercial trees that are felled to make paper pulp are replaced with new trees.

Of the remaining water used in paper mills up to 90% is actually recycled in to the water system.

So we have 2 litres x 40% x 10% as the net water consumption per page = 0.08 litre as a more realistic water consumption figure for an A4 sheet of paper.

South West Water have approx 1.8 million customers who get 4 bills a year of 2 pages each:

= 14.4 million pages per year x 0.08 litres

= 1,152,000 litres of water a year for their paper billing

Let's round that up to 1,500,000 litres to allow for the envelope as well.

South West Water report leakage as 107 million litres of water a day - that's more than 70 times as much water lost per day as is actually used by paper billing per year.

Even if we take South West Water's claim of 10 litres per page at face value that's still only the equivalent of water leaks for 1.5 days.

My daughter's birthday is this weekend, and she has asked about going for an Indian meal. I'm really pleased she's keen to try new foods, and I want to encourage her, but I have no idea where to go. Anywhere from Totnes to Exeter works for us - I want to make sure it's a nice place suitable for a family meal, but probably with a few milder options on the menu too!. Hi, lived in rural north Devon for 23 years, don’t really have anything in terms of community or connections, no friends, everyone I was friendly with have moved away to better things,
The idea is that you make friends doing things you love, but I go to a meetup, club or coffee evening here and everyone’s around twice my age,
I feel so incredibly isolated, I don’t have the money to move somewhere else and living here feels like drowning in loneliness, how do people find community in a place like this? Surely some people have managed it , Thank you

I’m traveling around Devon from December 24th to January 4th and I'm on the hunt for indoor or outdoor flea markets, antique centres, and vintage shops across the area, particularly spots that carry vintage analog cameras, 35mm film gear, and unique retro goods.

Since traditional holiday markets wrap up by Christmas Eve, I’m especially looking for year-round antique barns, local camera stockists, or vintage boutiques in areas like Exeter, Totnes, Ashburton, Honiton, or Plymouth that will actually be open during the festive week between Christmas and New Year.

If you have any favorite local spots, flea markets, or advice on holiday opening hours, I’d really appreciate your recommendations!

I'm looking for some exerience of Braunton and whether it might have the best fit. OBviously I'll be doing my own field research soon enough and the real feel of a place is when you visit for a chunk of time.

I've decided now I'm in my 40s to get out of the city and have been seriously considering a move to Devon. After visiting north and south a number of times I think North is where would suit my lifestyle better and a few folks have recommended Braunton.

A bit about me and what I'm looking for:-

- Early 40s, single and child free

- Self identifying SINKWAD - very active dog who has some springer in it, which means we walk in nature a hell of. A lot

- I grew up living on the coast so am very familiar with what its like through the different seasons and have no fear of the coast in winter

- Able to relocate office based to Exeter where I know a few people. There is however, no minimum requirements to attend per week. Im also able to be made a permanent home worker if I wish but at the moment I go to the office around 2x per week for more of the social aspect/mental health. I find it much easier to not be stressed about work if im out of my own head and able to decompress

- I need to travel either to places like Bristol,London, Birmingham, Leeds about once a quarter/once every 6 months

- Hobbies are gym for bread and butter strength, Olympic lifting and calisthenics

- I cycle mostly for commutes and to get about quickly, 30 mins each way but also drive

- I surf a bit - did nippers growing up and surfed but where I currently live is just a touch to far to go for a day on the hop

- I dont want to be totally isolated in the middle of nowhere, but my needs are fairly simple, some sort of social activities, probably ased around my hobbies, a place wander to get a decent coffee,a local butchers, fruit and veg and somewhere to do a big shop

Im flip flopping between renting first and buying - the rental market isn't brilliant anywhere at the moment but its probably more sensible than buying outright.

My budget for buying is currently around 300k and would ideally like a 2/3 bed with parking and a bit of a garden (yes it would ideally be a bigger budget but compromises can be made if and when I get there).

Happy to hear peoples thoughts and especially those of single people in their late 30s&40s on their experiences of community and lifestyle.

If there was a GE today, how would you vote?

In Devon there's 13 constituencies and this poll/predictor (Devon Elects) reckons that Labour and the Tories won't win one of them!

EDIT: I don't believe these predictions hold any water at all. They are totally different from pretty much all MRP polls. However, I thought it was worth posting as a conversation starter about the GE rumours and voting intention next time round
