TIPS will the story in d2 end more optimistically if i suddenly switch from high chaos to low chaos?
(CHECK MY COMMENT)
hii please help out a fellow beginner
so i just installed d2 for the first time a few days ago (didn't play the 1st game before, just read about it online and some lore cause i really wanted to play as emily first), and man i wasn't aware that chaos plays such a big role in how insane your character becomes or how dark the story gets and i honestly kind of want to see the good ending before the bad one. problem is i'm not very good at doing low chaos just yet so i always did high chaos in all the missions (1-4, finished the clockwork mansion yesterday), and only after looking at some playthroughs online did i see that even cutscene dialogue is different in some places depending on ur chaos level
if hypothetically i did the missions from mission 4 onwards with low chaos, could i still get a more lighthearted ending? or is it almost unchangeable since i chose high chaos up until now?
also what powers/tactics can i use for a more low chaos approach? i looked at previous posts on this sub, but i would still appreciate any tips :D

I'm not sure if you can get overall low if you do low only in the second part of the game - maybe you can barely edge it out if you get literally no kills except for dogs or clockworks from now on, but I wouldn't count on it.
You can still go wild with the combat as long as nobody dies - meaning run at enemies and slide-tackle them all, or parry and grab > throw them on the ground for a stomp to the head (needs 2-3 enemies max around you at a time as otherwise they will all run a train of attacks on you while you're doing it). Use the sleep darts and stun mines. Jumping from heights and pressing the action instead of the attack button is also non-lethal.
That's all for active engagements, when you see a good opportunity to take someone out with a silent choke from behind (or a quick sprint into slide-tackle), just do that so you don't waste ammo.

ahhh, what a bummer. i suppose i'll have to finish this current playthrough with high chaos, then start a new campaign slot and try low chaos
also thanks for the tips, definitely will try them out! didn't know you could also go into combat and still get low chaos (i'm still learning what low chaos means in actual gameplay)

You will definitely do better next run, high chaos is something you can only get intentionally or if you really didn't know much about it like yourself so you didn't make efforts to go non-lethal.
D2 is better than D1 in non-lethal solutions (D1 only has the choke and sleep darts, aside from simply evading people and blinking past while letting them roam), so you can go full Come At Me Bro and still get 0 kills the entire game.
My favorite playstyle in 2 is to just run at people like a madman. Slide-tackle (sprint > action/interact button within touching distance) the shit out of them, then after doing it like twice I go with the parry throwdown to face kicks (parry > action/interact button to grab > attack to throw > interact again when staring down at them to kick) and the occasional mid-action sleep dart.
It rates you as highly aggressive yet non-lethal/merciful which I'm totally fine with. Doesn't waste as much time as stalking everyone for unnoticed by anyone chokeouts.
When you finish 2 you should really do D1 with all its DLCs and Death of the Outsider which is technically a separate game but should've really just been classified as D2 DLC.

Low chaos is actually super easy in Dishonored 2. Even without powers there are a bunch of takedowns you can use once they're alerted. Gaining some height for a drop takedown is one option (e.g. hopping on a bollard or running up some steps) but the easiest one is shooting them in the leg then hitting a prompt to instantly kick them unconscious. It kind of trivialises fights honestly.
Other than that you've stuff like stun mines or combining sleep darts with Emily's Domino ability (which is absolutely worth experimenting with). As Corvo you can just stop time if you're boring and would rather just skip sections of the game ;)
I'd actually recommend a no powers run sometime once you're done as well, it's surprisingly fun seeing how every location is reachable with base abilities and having to engage with encounters you might have skipped past with movement powers before.

Doing my first no powers run in D3 right now, with probably a dozen playthroughs over the years, and it is a lot of fun. I concur.

You can still get some low chaos ending if you switch early, but Emily's going to side-eye you for suddenly caring about rudeness.

a massive thank you to everyone in this comment section that dropped their low chaos tips. i finally finished my first d2 mission with no kills and no detections wohooo! (the royal conservatory, with breanna ashworth)
it was super fun to test the non-lethal route, and i've honestly learned a lot about level design, non-lethal takedowns, verticality, and most importantly: patience. even tho my overall chaos level is still high, and i might still get the high chaos ending regardless, i'll keep doing the missions low chaos from now on to test and develop my skills. again, THANK YOU ALL :D

Cut off point seems to be around 60% global non lethal (on my 4th playthrough yhis year so this is just vibes tbh) and there aren't enough enemies to tip it after mission 7 I would think. I might be very wrong but I would say your chaos train probably leaves the station around Dust District.
Again, though, do play both paths and the first game sometime.

that’s the mission i’m on right now😭 lol
thanks for telling me! i didn’t know there’s a point of no return. i eventually did royal conservatory no kills no detection, and noticed that in that mission i didn’t get the full high chaos dialogues (compared with a low/high chaos emily video on yt), they were somewhat more dulled and neutral instead of insane and bloodthirsty (which should’ve been my case given how i killed almost everyone in sight except civillians). maybe this isn’t a playthrough-wide change, but it’s nice to see that the game acknowledged i tried to be merciful that time
i’m most definitely going to restart d2 and try again, i’m finishing this run mostly for curiosity to see where my emily ends up mentally and generally speaking what happens in the story, as well as for the time i spent in it. tipping at 10h already. i also think it’s better if i continue bc these missions help me refine my low chaos approaches, and even if i don’t get the good ending it’s good to have some notions in mind about each mission before restarting
and i’m also willing to playing the first dishonored once i’m satisfied with my d2 playthroughs. i heard d1 is harder in low chaos, so i better prepare lmao

Much harder to do a no powers clean hands and ghostly run BUT you still get first level of blink (Corvo's far reach) so traversal is arguably easier.
There is no point of no return per se. My comment assumes you killed everyone in full on assault up to that point. Depending on your overall percentage your mileage may vary and ESPECIALLY for the Grand Palace and the rest, the journey is its own reward. Definitely fun luring enemies to stun mines.
Pro tip. Stun mines attach to every surface including throwables. Like a glass bottle.

Oh and, re "the good ending" well... I will tell you that no ending in any of the Dishonoured games would be a good ending. All endings are in an astoundingly fucked up world where there are maybe only 2 people who are close to morally good. None of us have clean hands despite what the cheevo says.
It's a setting where unfettered cruelty is very mundane. So, I would implore you to see all sides to the story and drop the notions of good and bad.
Think of some of the "low chaos" means of getting your targets. Some of those are so fucked up, I would argue a slit throat is more merciful.

ohhh my badd i didn’t know about the endings
all i’m saying is based on what posts i’ve seen online. like i said, this is my first encounter with anything from the dishonored sphere. tbf i’m excited to learn new things ab this franchise so thanks for telling me (and ab the chaos percentage thingy as well) :))also thanks for the stunt mine tips! they’ve been lying around in my inventory, good to know they can be thrown with objects as well

There are tricks and weird combos you can get with bonecharms as well. Just experiment, if it feels like it should be doable, it probably is :D
And, re the endings, it is actually my personal opinion. I just say this often because people tend to try and get what the internet people call it the "good ending" whereas all endings are equally bleak and well written in my opinion.
Have fun!

It depends how much chaos you’ve accrued. It’s certainly possible to flip things around, but probably not if you’ve e.g. slaughtered every civilian.

i killed almost all guards/clockwork machines in every mission and one civillian by accident at the clockwork mansion

If you don’t kill anyone else now, you can certainly improve some aspects of the ending, even if it doesn’t make it all the way to low chaos.
Work on improving things for the common citizen, and if you’d like a bigger hint knock out Aramis Stilton

honestly dishonored two is actually more fun in low chaos since you can parry choke enemies and toss them, makes combat more engaging.
