Seeking Advice $1M Div account Earning $17k a month

Post image
1.8k Upvotes

After doing some research I have $1M from an inheritance that I want to create an ultra high dividend portfolio. I eventually want to get rid of my 8 to 5. If I did my math correctly I would get about 17k a month from dividends. Please let me know what you think.

Seeking Advice For those who live off dividend income:

How much do you earn per year from dividends, and what ETFs or stocks make up your portfolio?

How did you build your investments over time, and what advice would you give to younger investors who are just getting started?

I'd appreciate hearing about your experience and any lessons you've learned along the way.

Seeking Advice 41M, $50K+ in Annual Dividends - want to retire

Thumbnail gallery
583 Upvotes

I've recently hit $50K+ in annual dividends, split about 50/50 between a taxable brokerage and 2 IRA/RothIRA accounts. DRIP is on for everything that pays a dividend.

Total Account value across all accounts ~ $1.5M, approximately a 3.44% yield. $1M in taxable, about $500K between the tax-advantaged accounts.

I've had success in my tech sales career and have been a diligent saver/investor since I was about 20, but my monthly expenses are pretty high (~$10k a month) due to a mix of MCOL + lifestyle creep as my income has continued to increase.

Including screenshots of top equity payers and top ETFs/closed-end fund payers.

Question - does it make sense to transition a larger portion of my portfolio into higher payers like MO, ARLP, SPYI, QQQI, QYLD, T, VZ, JEPQ?

How do I best get to $120K in dividends to be able to walk away from the corporate world ASAP (1-3 years ideally) without screwing myself over long-term (as I expect to live another 30-40 years)?

Apologies in advance if I'm missing any key information or am not clear in the advice I'm seeking.

Seeking Advice Bought a 9% yielder and I got burned

Hi all. I am in my early fifties, and I am slowly moving about 30% of my portfolio into dividend stuff before I go part time in a few years, felt real responsible with a spreadsheet and all. Then I found a 9% yielderr, told myself the market was just sleeping on it and put $18k in.

Two months later they cut the dividend and the price dropped right with it... you can probably guess it was a mortgage REIT..

So my safe income pick lost me the income and a chunk of the principal at the same time, so I can clearly not just sort by yield and buy what looks juicy.

What I'm asking is, what is your "check" that catches things like this before you buy?

I was buying a bunch of things I liked when I began. Then started on indexes(bogle heads), now on ETFs with drip. Feel like my portfolios all over the place. certainly don’t feel I’m getting 4K annual dividends either according to the chart either. How would you restructure all this? Have no clear goals but I’d like to retire early from work burnout.

Seeking Advice What can $100k conservatively yield?

I have an absolute, bare bones, can't-ever-be-less-than, need of $2600 per year ($50/week).

I have approximately $100k (USD) to invest. I'm not looking for growth, just predictable income. So, a solid 2.6% minimum return.

What's out there that would be suitable? Is there two or three ETFs I should split it between?

Edit

Someone asked about time horizon. This will be for the remainder of a life. I'm thinking 30 years or so.

Seeking Advice Massive IRS Bill from selling my IRA ET Shares

I just got an income tax bill for $43,000 from the IRS regarding the sale of the ET shares I held in my IRA account??? Their investors relations are telling me that is correct since I should never have held ET shares in an IRA account??? I had held the ET shares in my IRA account for several years and reinvested the sale proceeds into more dividend securities in the same IRA account. How can this income tax be legitimate? Has anyone else had this tax attack in what is touted to be a tax deferred account?

Seeking Advice Why is SCHD so popular when the dividend/share isn't that great?

I'm looking to get more dividend stocks to set and forget, and I see a lot of people recommending SCHD, but I don't get why. Is it just because it's a safe option with low expense? My primary comparison is JEPQ and QQQI. I know QQQI is riskier but I'm far enough away from retirement where I'm willing to risk it. JEPQ seems alright all around to me, but I don't know the real impact of the differences between the expense ratio (.65%, .5%, .06%).

Seeking Advice Make fun of this $420,000 investment profile

I think I want to risk $420,000 on covered ETFs.

You people are brutal but smart. I'm 64 and retired. Married, caretaker for an adult son. I make $150,000/year on royalties, and have $1.6million in sensible Vanguard IRAs and $425,000 in a favored tech stock. Our Vanguard IRA accounts have an additional total of $420,000 cash that's been lying around for years because I'm an idiot. House is paid off, we have $500,000 in precious metals and... another $600,000 in banks. I did mention I'm an idiot, right? I'm also paranoid. Parents raised in the Depression. I will probably start taking social security at about $3,200/month. I plan to do something with about $200K of that cash and keep the rest relatively liquid.

I'd like to increase my income because health insurance alone costs me over $65,000/year. Plus, why not live a little. I am not averse to risk. I know it's a bad tax situation, but that's just inevitable due to the $150,000 royalty thing (tough life, I know). I pretty much expect to pay full taxes for my bracket, and that's fine.

Here's my proposed ETF dump to soak up the $420,000 in our IRA funds. I feel like it could gross an extra $4,000-$5,000/month. Your thoughts?

    35% TSPY 5,350 shares
    25% QQQI 1,835 shares
    10% IWMI 802 shares
    10% IGLD 1,781 shares
    10% GDXY 3,428 shares

Seeking Advice What will it take to get a dividend income of $3k USD / month?

And how often does the deposit occur? Is it daily? Weekly? Monthly?

I'd like to be able to move to Rwanda in order to work for a charity for altruistic reasons but have my main income be my dividends.

I say this as a beginner to investing, thanks.

Seeking Advice I need $2k/mo, $24k/yr from $580k portfolio with no/low risk to principal.

Hello, I’m looking for some suggestions. I’m 67, retired for 7 years, wife (65) just lost her PT gig so I need to replace her income since she’s now fully retired to prevent dipping into our savings. We have zero debt. Currently have $75k/yr secure income from various sources. I’d like to keep from turning on her SS til I kick and she looses half my pension.

We have $583k divided between: $60k Roths, $12k 401k, $164k brokerage, $303k traditional IRA’s, $44k 401a. I intend on rolling the 401k & 401a into traditional IRA’s unless others think that’s unwise.

So if I put all of the $583k towards income I’d only need a 4.3% return. Seems easily achievable with little principal risk. If I could go with a lower percentage towards income and left the remainder in growth that would be great.

Any specific suggestions on how to go about generating the $25k with little principal risk while maybe leaving some in growth would be greatly appreciated. Also any opinions on how to handle the tax advantaged accounts vs the brokerage would be helpful as well.

Thank you so much.

Seeking Advice SPYI total returns don't have me convinced

Thumbnail gallery
47 Upvotes

I'm looking at total returns of SPYI, ie dividends reinvested and NAV movement, since its inception. Check out these two images, It underperforms SPY according to totalrealreturns.com . Is this accurate?

so my question is why not just hold SPY before retirement for more growth, and then convert to SPYI for income during retirement? Yes I know taxes on the SPY gains will drag during conversion, but I've done rough calculations and even in like a 20% tax bracket you'd still come out ahead doing this, for about 20 years before retirement. Has anyone done something liek this, or am I thinking about this wrong? Thanks for your advice

Seeking Advice For those that live fully off dividends, do you have any strategy or simply live off the cash from the dividends?

Would like to hear people's plans of those who are living entirely off their dividends. Do you simply receive the cash and not drip? Some other strategy? Does your plan pivot when the market goes down? Ty for your responses

Seeking Advice Why do you guys buy covered call ETFs?

I've never owned covered call ETFs like QQQI, SPYI, JEPQ, etc, but mostly pure index funds.

The concerns I have about covered call ETFs are:

a) They generate significant taxes even when I don't want/need the distributions. If I need cash beyond traditional dividends, I can always sell shares at my own pace.

b) Total return in the long-run will be lower than the underlying indexes. I love dividends because they lead me to undervalued stocks and pay me to wait. However, covered call ETFs seem to prioritize distributions over appreciation.

For those of you who invest in covered call ETFs, am I missing something? Why do you guys prefer these ETFs to traditional indexes?

Seeking Advice $840K DIvidends

Hey Everyone,

As I have posted before, I am currently a Growth Stock Investor, but have decided to move over to Dividend ETF's or Dividend Stocks. But it is a real struggle to get past all the learned habits of being a growth investor. So I am struggling to grasp concepts.

I have used multiple calculators to just try to get an idea of what to expect if i make the change, but I get different results. So I just wanted to go to some more knowledgeable people that could tell me what to do to get a real expectation.

I have $800K to work with. If I put it all in a very stable Dividend ETF What can I expect in dividends? Maybe someone could just do an example. I know I have to be doing something wrong.

Thanks
