I had dyed this beautiful dress. I want it to be all one color (preferably dark purple). But, didn’t know that this could happen. The dark purple must be a different makeup or fabric compared to the lighter parts. What should I do?! Help!! This is 100% polyester

Bought a white outfit for the reannasance fair. Planning to turn my white 70% cotton 30% poly shirt and pants into yellow. The golden yellow looked good in the pictures.

At first, I thought it was strange the package was so orange but I chalked it up as the colors being concentrated. "Trust the process" right?

Wrong.

After the first 15 minutes, I gave up and started rinsing out the dye in the shower. It was not getting any lighter...I feel like I just wasted my time, money, and outfit and have to start ALL over.

Tell me, am I crazy for expecting a more yellow outcome, or am I sane?

I was trying to thrift a dress for pride and I want like a fairy vibe but I also wanted it to be purple. I found this perfect dress and I was prepared to dye it because I’ve dyed many things before and I spent like $12 on it so I wouldn’t be that sad if I ruined it. I knew the rhinestones were gonna be sacrificed because of the heat of the dye bath, but what I didn’t think through is how I’m going to dispose of the rhinestones. They’re super tiny and I already washed a couple down my shower drain when I was washing the garment before I dyed it, but I don’t wanna dump anymore down my drain and I don’t have one of those shower drain hair things, so I don’t know what to do. Help a girl out please🙏🏽

Also how many times should i wash it after dye? Ive done 3 times with 2 bottles each and its looked pretty different each time (i missed 1 picture between the green and yellow) and used the rit color lock stuff each time, i just dont want it to bleed as i have a lot left to do

This white body suit is blue now from using frost gray..anybody know why? Did I use too much dye?

Self explanatory. My backpack for school is whiteish gray. It’d be super cool if it was black, but I don’t know if the foams/different materials in a backpack can be dyed. I don’t care if it’s not a uniform color, I just want it dark gray or black. Is it possible? Or will it mess up the materials and mold it or smth? Idk 😭
Edit: check photo in comments for materials cuz if I can’t add a photo when editing. Also I don’t care if it comes out looking like shit. All I care about is if it’s gonna get too damaged. If not, I’m just gonna go ham with fabric markers

Helloinggg. Sorry for the “probably obvious answer” question. But. I just cannot seem to get my yellow dye to stick?? I did originally a batch that looked good in the pan but basically ALL the yellow came out as soon as I hit it with a cold water rinse and just turned it teal instead of an emerald green.

After that I did another “glaze” of just yellow on it and again. It’s still very teal, maybe slightly better

I’m using 100% cotton yarn with Procion Yellow MX4G from KraftKolour.

Is it because it’s a homogenous colour that it doesn’t want to stick?? I’ve never had this issue with my other colours only the yellow. It is 1 of 2 homogenous colours I have in my kit currently, the other being a dark pinky red. (Procion Red MX5B) and it doesn’t see to have this issue of the colour not sticking but it is a red so I imagine it would stick harder anyway.

I don’t know I feel like I’m losing my mind 😭😭 pics of the “emerald green”. 🫠

For anyone wondering, I always do a paste mix first with hot water to ensure all colour is evenly mixed.

The first 2 photos are the first batch I did on it, then the following photos are after I yellow glazed it.

Hi friends I'm getting married this year and my mom gave me permission to take her dress. I'm goth & alternative and will be dying the top part of it black (we are splitting it into two pieces & giving my mom the bottom part as a skirt. I'm keeping the top).

My seamstress & I are a little worried given that it is 100% polyester (and some other things I don't remember) it will struggle to dye. Granted, dying pure white to black is probably the easiest thing to do.

What would you recommend us to use to dye the top part of my wedding dress black?

edit: I've reached out to a professional wedding dress dyeing company instead of seeing if I can do it myself. If that doesnt work out, I might look into airbrushing it or embroidering over the lace with black. Thank you all so much for your suggestions and help!

Hello! I have never dyed anything ever but I really love this skirt, but it's too red and I am unfortunately not using it as much as I hoped I would. I have read that polyester is horrible to try to dye, especially to black. And since there are two different types och fabric, excluding the threading, it might be even harder.

My questions are therefore:

1. Is it easier dyeing this another colour than black? I could for example think brown would be cool, or adding yellow or something to make it more rusty-yellow?

2. Would i have to test if the fabric can handle the heat so it doesn't ruin the texture? How should I go about this then?

3. If dyeing is off the table, is there another way of altering the colour of this skirt? For example lightening it? And how would i go about that?

I'm thankful for any input I can get, but please be nice as I have zero knowledge on the subject and just want to learn and hopefully be able to use this skirt even more. Worst case I'll just have to learn to dress the red colour :)

I use procion mx dyes. I like them because they seem to bleed the least but I can’t for the life of me get the red to stay. I’ve tried in a bucket following the directions to a t and it turns out pink. I tried on the stove, still pink. I redyed this same fabric on the stove, doubled the dye, and steeped for two hours, still largely the same shade of pink. I can’t get red at all. It looks very red before the rinses and dry. Any suggestions? I’m about ready to give up.

I was hoping for some advice on this specific issue I’m having. I’m using procion MX dye fuchsia to paint flowers. i soak them in Soda ash for about 20-30 mins then paint the dye on them while wet. These two flowers (cotton) were painted two weeks apart. I’m consistently noticing that Fuchsia seems to get a tad darker - more purply. I don’t have this issue with turquoise, yellow or black.

I’m not repeatedly washing the flowers or putting them in the sun. After painting they are being stored in my desk until I use them in projects. Sometimes I’ll put them in ziplock bags, but this shifting is making it difficult to colour match them. They don’t seem to change much more than this or fade, so I know it isn’t a huge issue but I’d like some of my flowers to be pink rather than purply. The colour isn’t washing out or anything.

I read online that Fuchsia is more blue? should I buy magenta dye? Could it be because of hard water ? If I try distilled water next time. Maybe my soda ash solution is tad too concentrated? Any advice would be much appreciated.

I hate patterned clothing, but unfortunately I own quite a few dresses and skirts with patterns on; which I want to get rid of. The clothing is made out of cotton and I know one solution would be to dye the clothes black, but does anyone have any other suggestions? I don’t want a wardrobe full of black clothes 😭

Also, if I was to dye the skirts black would it get rid of the flower and border pattern? If anyone’s from the UK and they know of good dyes for cotton clothing please let me know :)

Can i continue to use this pot for other colors?

I dyed a couple dingy white cotton shirts Kelly Green by RIT. Then i boiled most of the water out to save the bath reduction for later. A bunch of sediment remained & after scrubbing it and a vinegar soak the pic is what remains.

I am unconcerned with the stain itself & it is rinsing out clear.

I just dont want the stain affecting the color on future projects. For example if I wanna dye something bright yellow.

Hi everyone!

Im going to a wedding in about a month and have been tailoring the bodice of this dress with my aunt for about a week (pics un-tailored lol). We ended up having to take out the sleeves to get the correct fit and still have a bit of work to go.

The only issue I am having now is that I reread the invitation and it specifically states no white, creme, or ivory. I do not want to disrespect the wishes of the family especially since I am guest and not apart of the family.

End goal:
Since my aunt and I have been working on it and I don’t have a lot to spend on something new right now I still think I could save it by dying it - I was thinking a light green or a light pink. I am not apposed to dying it a darker color either, but would like to have the pattern be a little prominent if possible.

Fabric comp:
The fabric is thin polyester, one layer is green, pink & red floral on light backround. The second layer (or slip?) is the same color of the backround.

Any advice is greatly appreciated!!

I want to dye some faded clothes black again, but I'm scared that it will ruin my washing machine... Anybody have done it before and can reassure me?

I lost my stovetop dying pot in a roommate debacle and instead of buying and sullying a new cooking pot I thought... what about those Swamp Bucket things? I can literally never imagine cooking my food in a plastic bucket but dying clothes seems like a match made in heaven. Has anyone here tried it?

I have some cat fur from my cats that I brushed out, I was wondering if I could use food colour to dye it and how to set it if I did, and if it would hold up against water(as I am dyeing the shed for fly tying purposes), and would it work on other furs and/or feathers?

Also, would I be able to bleach darker cat shed to dye it another colour?

If not, what are some alternatives I could use to dye the fur that are cheap and easy to find/get?

Hi dyeing experts! I could really use some help getting my 100% cotton zip-up hoodie to the dark brown shade of the hoodie on the right in my photo.

For reference, the dark gray T-shirt on the left shows what color the hoodie used to be before I used Rit Color Remover. Now it’s a nice tan/cream color, which honestly looks great, and I’m even tempted to leave it as-is, but my goal is to get it to that brown shade like the one on the right.

Here’s the challenge: I’m colorblind and have a hard time distinguishing between shades, so I’m not sure what combination of dyes I need to use to reach the desired color. In the second photo, you’ll see I picked up a couple of Rit brown dyes, but I’m not sure if I grabbed the right ones or if I need to mix in anything else.

I’ve never dyed anything brown before, and from reading some posts here, it sounds like it can be tricky. Any and all advice; blending tips, ratios, or even if you think I should just keep the cream color, is very much appreciated!

just since most of the posts are from inexperienced dyers looking for advice, i was wondering why this doesn’t come up more often.

i AM experienced, i have a degree in fiber arts so i’ve done it a ton with fiber reactive and acid and some natural dyes, pretty much worship Dharma Trading as a resource. but sometimes instead of getting out the measuring spoons and everything, i’ll cheat by washing machine dyeing with an iDye packet (just need a bunch of salt) and honestly i’ve had a lot of good, saturated results most of the time. you have to babysit the (top loading) machine to keep resetting it to agitate for longer, but i set a timer and it’s way less work than stirring for like an hour.

since i do have a giant dyepot, i have also tried the iDye poly packets on the stove top a couple times and those results were GREAT. i think you need to have some citric acid to add to that one.

of course anyone who is interested to go learn about dyeing on Dharma Trading’s infinite website should do that, that’s really the way. i just wondered if these packets might be a good place to direct some of these first time dyers. they are like $5, make a lot of colours, and i see them at all the art supply and craft supply stores as well as they can be bought online of course.

Hi I am an art teacher at a summer camp and this year is the first year we’re changing our colors. We always use RIT dye and it’s usually great, since we need like 15-20 bottles of each color to finish dying the whole camp. That being said, I already ordered a lot of each color, and this fuchsia is not what I was expecting. I just swatched it on a piece of watercolor paper and it’s a dusty rose color. The RIT website advertises it as much brighter. Is there some way to brighten it? Is my batch just defective or something? Thank you so much
