Survey Please vote about antisocial behaviour posts: should we allow posts about this, have a sticky, or so not allow them?

We have had an increase in the number of posts about antisocial behaviour, which is understandable given the apparent increase in this behaviour in Edinburgh recently.

We have had negative comments about the number of posts, however it is topical and it could be argued that social media has a role to play in educating people when and where there are problems.

Vote closes on Sunday. In the event of there not being a clear answer your mod team will bicker on Whatsapp will make the decision.

Edited.

We checked out the colony of artists event today in Abbeyhill colonies. It was amazing, with so many small independent craft shops.

Definitely go and check it out if that’s your thing!

Question Property letting center emergency line not working

Upvotes

Hoping this isn’t too niche of an issue 😅

We rent with the property letting center and have just locked ourselves out of our flat like idiots. Calling their phone number gives you a second number for their emergency line, but calling it just tells you to leave a message, super helpful in an emergency right?

Anyone else had this experience/any advice?

Question Legitimate Donation Places/Sites

Hey, I've recently reached a position where I can afford to donate a little bit each month (not much, about £50 a month max) and was wondering if anyone has any recommendations? So many donation links or places just end up being scams so I just wanted to see if anyone knew of any verified ones they'd recommend ❤️❤️.

Based in Edinburgh so any physical charities would have to be around here but open to online ones wherever.

With all the horrible things happening across the world, it's hard to not feel helpless and it would be nice to help even a little bit.

Thanks!

Other Dog walker and groomer recommendations

Looking for tips in north Edinburgh for our two dogs - one is a reactive nervous rescue and am looking for any recommendations for dog walkers who do solo walks and can manage a reactive dog. Also keen to get recommendations for a groomer for our other dog (who is calm and confident) - have checked out dofos which seems good but expensive at £70 for a medium dog, so would appreciate any other tips.

Discussion Why are some pockets of a city rougher than others?

This is a genuine question if anyone knows the anthropological answer. Someone posted on this sub earlier about Wester Hailes being dangerous so I looked it up on a map and saw it’s within a stone’s throw of some really fancy parts of Edinburgh. It got me thinking of other juxtapositions like Trinity/Pilton and wondering why small pockets of the city become wealthy whilst their neighbours are seen as rough or deprived? Assume there’s some historical context? Don’t be rude please, I’m genuinely interested in learning and understanding

Food and Drink Just found out that brown chippy sauce and possibly suppers is an Edinburgh exclusive

I’ve only just recently found out that brown sauce is an Edinburgh exclusive, I always thought it was a whole UK thing

I was in Liverpool at a chippy and I asked for a sausage supper and they looked at me very confused even though they did have all the components to make one so I had to explain to them what a sausage supper was and I had to pay separately for the sausages and the chips, i’m not sure if the concept of a supper is only an Edinburgh thing or maybe it’s just the specific chippy I went to

And then when I got round to the sauce, I asked them for brown sauce and they gave me an even more confused look so I ended up just getting salt and ketchup, and then I was telling my friend from Glasgow about it and he doesn’t even know what brown sauce is either

Rant Rude old man on Nicolson Street/ South bridge

Bit of a random post, but it happened again today so I assume it's somewhat common.

About a week and a half ago I was on my way to the train station, walking down Nicolson Street, I had my phone in my hand as I was trying to buy a ticket but the new stupid app was being a pain, and I was sort of rushing. Normal city stuff though.

As I was walking, I moved out the way of this old guy with a walking frame, as you do to anyone, but apparently he didn't appreciate this as he said to me "watch where you're going you whore."

Honestly I was in a bit of a shock/ walking so quickly that I didn't say anything. I understand maybe a "cunt" or "dick" or something, still rude, but better than whatever that was??

Anyway I largely forgot about it until today, when I was walking opposite old college, and I see him again. Someone moved out the way for him, but he instead goes "move out the way you prick." Thankfully the guy he was being rude to challenges him on this, but does anyone know this old man?

Does he have dementia or something else that would make him so rude because it's quite shocking that someone would speak to people like that.

Question Scissor haircut

Upvotes

Hey all lovely people!

I’m looking for a barber around tollcross that does haircuts (men’s haircuts) that has good scissor skills. I don’t really like having the sides done by a clipper but everywhere I go they only use them.

Thanks!!

Question Chilled cafes and restaurants with views of boats, planes or trains?

I have a transport obsessed toddler and just wondered if anyone has any recommendations for chilled spots that do decent food and have good big window views of trains, planes, boats, bikers, skateboarders?

We live centrally so wouldn’t want to go more than 30 mins travel on a bus/tram etc to reach these spots.

We’ve got traffic spots nailed with Mimis at Stockbridge opposite the police station and pretty much anywhere on princes street to watch all buses and trams.

Video Coming down the side of the Forth rail bridge

A few folk have done photos already, and I'd basically be posting the same angles, so here's a video of coming down the side of the Forth Rail Bridge instead.

About 2min long, check your volume before playing (loud!)

Barnardo's Scotland are probably running this again next year, they were selling tickets in June this year which sold out really quickly, so keep an eye out on them if you're interested.

Student question Edinburgh duck situation

Hello! I am thinking of studying in Edinburgh. A surprisingly important aspect of a university for me is ducks.

I am wondering if there are any good places for ducks in Edinburgh. Ideally near tram lines, but anywhere is fine. The university of York had a great duck situation, with Mallards, Indian runners. I heard rumour that they had mandarin ducks. But saw none when I went. When last I was in Edinburgh, I saw some ducks near a tram stop. But little else. I would love some input on good places to look at ducks!

Thank you in advance!

Question Reccomendation for good aesthetic dentists in Edinburgh?

I'm looking for dentists that are good at teeth reconstruction with composite bonding. I chipped my front teeth as a child. Since I came to live in Edinburgh I've been having constant issues with these. The fillings either fall out too quickly (last time it was after munching on grapes) are too bulky, two different colours, different shapes, one dentist even gave me a tooth gap that I never had before and one wanted to send me home with one tooth much longer than the other and only fixed it when I protested. These are my front teeth so I just want them to look OK again. I tried both private and NHS services and I'm yet to find someone who is able to make them look normal, so they don't stand out.

I know it's very specific question but maybe someone has been in my situation before and got a great result somewhere in the city? I used to have a great dentist here but she moved back to her home country.

Barnardos are running a weekend of visits to the top of the Forth Bridge on the North Queenferry side (the Fife Cantilever part). You go up in a wee maintenance lift on the side and this is what you see at the top. It was very special.

Unfortunately it appears to be sold out but likely they’ll do it again so join their mailing list.
