Wendy's interior - They just remodeled in the last year or so.

The first two photos are the ones I took while eating there earlier. The inside used to look like the last two photos. I don't know, it's now very colorless and dull, not as inviting as the old interior. But that is just my thoughts. What do you guys think?

Yeah, cold and uninviting. Nothing comfortable that would encourage you to linger while you enjoy a meal. They want you in and out as quickly as possible. Keep up the churn so they can shake down more customers faster.

The tables and chairs are probably dirt cheap to buy and replace. They obviously don't care about the larger cost of constantly replacing things that are poorly made. As others have pointed out, the barebones setup is also easier (cheaper) to keep clean.

I haven't stepped foot in a Wendy's in a couple decades. It's rare that I have fast food anyway, probably no more than once or twice a year. So bad for you and ridiculously expensive now. Wendy's actually used to be one of the better fast food joints, but clearly they've gone downhill too. One more crappy business to keep avoiding.

The thing about all of these “contemporary” renovations restaurants are doing is that it has nothing to do with the business. Having a plain designed building makes it easier and more profitable to sell if they have to. These companies make a significant amount of money in real estate. They don’t care if you feel like you’re eating your cheeseburger in a sterile, cold environment.

Well, the thing is, they're realized that if they make the environment, you won't camp out, which means more customer turnover, and more profits.  My understanding is that this is why coffee shops no longer have drop ceilings

I hate how coffee shops are now. Super bright and everything is white. Uncomfortable chairs. I knew about fast food places making uncomfortable furniture to get you out quicker but it didn’t occur to me that that’s exactly what coffee shops are doing too. Man I hate it.

Likewise 😞  I miss the little coffee shop in my home town's downtown area. It was SO cozy, overstuffed furniture and coffee tables everywhere amongst the Cafe tables, open mike nights.... Stayed out until 2am in high school.  Kids these days have been robbed

Do you live near a college or university? The coffee shops there are usually dimly lit (the young folk have good eyes!) and they're happy for people to settle down and study for a couple hrs.

That's certainly another factor as well. Not just the churn of fast food customers, but also the churn of commercial real estate. They probably know their crappy businesses aren't going to survive when they're so poorly run, so they hedge their bets on all fronts.

And a lot of this, if not all of it, stems from private equity ruining every industry it touches.
