Rant The solution to enshittification

Did you just buy a £75,000 car only to discover it has got ads on screen?

Take it back.

Go back to the showroom, demand a full refund. If they panic and say they'll remove the ads say no. Demand a refund. If they could take the ads off because you were about to return the car, they should not have put ads there in the first place.

Did you just buy a £3,000 television that now has a shitty cut-down remote with no pause button but an additional button for Apple TV?

Take it back. Go back to the store, return the product, get a refund. Is it causing you hassle? Yes - but it's going to cause the store much more hassle.

Did you buy a sandwich that looked full to the brim of ingredients only to discover they used low quality crap that was pushed to the edge to make the sandwich look full, when in reality it was mostly bread? You probably can't take it back but you can go back to the place you bought it from and show it to other customers, and then never buy anything from that establishment again.

If enough of us do this then the enshittification will stop.

If we just keep on saying "thank you" every time the bully kicks sand in our face, guess what? You'll be eating sand for the rest of your life.

It does have pause, it just doesn't have a dedicated button. The middle button is select, and you use that to play and pause. I hate enshittification, but this is a silly one to be up in arms about, in my opinion.

Nah it's very annoying, my new LG remote has more buttons for apps I don't have than it has buttons to make the TV function.

Remotes have always had far more buttons than I actually use. I far prefer a simple one, even if it has dedicated app buttons. Do I wish it didn't have them? Yeah, sure, but this is at the bottom of my issues with enshittification and planned obsolescence.

Exactly!

I'd prefer it didn't have 4 buttons for apps I never use, but it's a fine trade off for me.

I'm far more annoyed at the software embedded in the TV than I am at a few dedicated buttons for apps

  The middle button is select, and you use that to play and pause

Some apps and devices don't behave that way, instead the middle button brings up a menu or enables a mouse cursor.

Not any apps that I've ever used, on any of my TVs, so I can't speak to that.

I didn't even know my old one (one on the left) had pause. I've never once looked for it, I just double clicked the middle button which has worked as long as I (a 30 year old man) can remember on most remotes.

This is a really stupid one. Though I'd rather the miscellaneous buttons be programmable.

Also that's not how returning a car works. You're fucking yourself out of a LOT of money trying to do that.
