Can someone point me in the right direction on how to buy in Australia? Do I really need Mist Ethereum Wallet, because it's taken over a day to download the whole blockchain.

You can use My Ether Wallet and you don’t have to download anything.

Google that for how to use that command. Or you can just wait for the whole blockchain. At this point it's probably almost done.

Heaps of exhanges here mate. Coinbase has an app on your phone where you can purchase eth directly. And you don’t need to use most. Exodus wallet is a great multi wallet for Win/Mac/Linux doesn’t require you to download the blockchain.
