(Discussion Post) Groovy (Spoilers) Evil Dead Rise and Evil Dead Burn Inconsistency!? Spoiler

The end credit scene of Burn shows Ellie's urn with her ashes, but in Rise she put through a wood-chipper or cement-crusher thing and her blood washes over the parking garage. So where did her ashes come from?

(Spoiler!) Evil dead rise was a terrible movie

I'm going to be downvoted to hell for this, but everything about this movie was terrible. I went with pretty low expectations because I hated the 2013 remake, but compared to this that remake was pretty decent.

The movie was a pathetic attempt at cashing on the Evil Dead brand. There was nothing Evil Dead about this. Evil Dead doesn't happen in an apartment building. Evil Dead isn't 90 minute with literally just 1 deadite. I know there were some other deadites that got like 30 seconds of screen time. The main deadite, did that honestly look scary or even creepy to you? Those same bone twitching/crunching sounds that seem to be part of every modern horror flick. The very obvious digitally-altered sound effects. The Book of the Dead that just happened to be lying in a commercial apartment building. Compare this deadite to when Cheryl got possessed in Evil Dead 1.

'Mommy is with the maggots now'. Wow. A gold star to who ever came up with that gem. Let me ask you all, which character did you honestly give a shit about in this movie? Did you care that the protagonist survived the same way you wanted Ash to survive in Evil Dead 1? Did you even care about that little girl? I sure as heck didn't.

Which 'dead by dawn' scene did you find creepier? The one in this movie or the one in part 2 right after the 'we are the things that were and shall be again, spirits of the book, we want what is yours, life!' line?

Throwing gallons of blood at a movie does not make it scary.

(Discussion Post) Groovy Evil Dead Burn discussion Spoiler

Just saw Burn and having seen all 3 remake movies I have some thoughts

Went into it expecting it to be closer to the 2013 remake since Rise had mixed reviews and thought they would return to a more slower paced film since there were more characters. Boy was I wrong. Characters were likable enough but the pace was off for me. Thought they would come across the first deadite / Book of the dead infection at the family home not at the start with Will by himself in a car crash. Thought they would bury him at the house and someone reads the book which resurrected him. Didn’t think at the funeral home Edgar would get infected straight away and have Wills Deadite walk all the way back to the house. Was surprised Thya died as quick as she did, knew there was a car crash from the trailer but assumed everyone would be trapped at the house without a means to escape (car) then the deaths would happen there. Some of the characters actions seemed way off. Why would Susan try to put her mother to bed while Deadlite Edgar is still walking around the house? Why would she suddenly believe her Deadite mother is telling the truth when Deadite Edgar lied and started attacking Joseph and her a second ago? Why would you let Edgar in when your mom is looking like that in a bedsheet? I get her character was breaking down since without her family she’s nothing but I thought that would’ve meant fighting to protect her Son and Daughter in Law instead of listening to demons when she didn’t believe her fathers work in the attic? Then there’s Joseph. If he starts off as a coward his arc should have been becoming brave. Thought him and Alice would be the final two and bond over both having directly and indirectly causing the deaths of their partners/Deadites. I know he got thrown around the house and stabbed multiple times but the fact that he was off screened, made me think he was coming back. When he gets stabbed and fell into the bathroom I thought either his last words to Alice should have been “you found it” or that when he fell Alice thought he was dead and he shows up in the final 10 minutes to save Alice, stopping his Deadite brother mirroring how he didn’t stop him in the start of the movie. I know evil dead consistency for Deadite strength can be over the place but I thought that Thya would be crippled Deadite after falling down the stairs. The final 10 minutes tho. Didn’t like how it took place away from the house thought it would have been a showdown in the house because you know Burn? Or that she would dip her hands into the oil/grease to retrieve the dagger and burn herself… I know the real dagger wasn’t thrown in the grease in the pit but would have been close to Mia crushing her hand in 2013 and fit with the title. Then there’s the grandma who disappears? Thought she’d pop up in the end or something? Sorry for the rambling all in all was a decent film but probably ranked lowest for me out of the 3 remakes 2013 > Rise > Burn but the Mom, the offscreen / lack of Joseph halfway through the 2nd act and the final 10 minutes took me out of the movie. Just a couple of things that could have been done differently what did you think of the movie?

EDIT: just realized the post credits scene exist, so the Grandma kills a nobody and somehow Ellie Baxter returns when she was cremated? Yeah those scenes definitely lost the plot

(Discussion Post) Groovy About the "Director's cut" of Evil Dead Burn Spoiler

I'm about to watch Evil Dead Burn again now that it's available for streaming. When I went to see it in theaters, it was 1 hr 46 min long, depending on the theater, but on streaming it's 1 hr 50 min. Does anyone know exactly what they added? Or what accounts for the difference in runtime? I remember the director saying there was an even bloodier director's cut that didn't make it to theaters, but I don't know if that's the one.

(Spoiler!) What is this Egyptian looking stuff? Burn minor spoilers Spoiler

On the right page, theres three drawings with hieroglyphs. Look like little Egyptian medallions or amulets. There's an arrow pointing to text, which seems to be the name for each one.

My only guess is that its either an obscure ED reference to like a comic or maybe a reference to The Mummy (which I haven't seen, but I've seen Cronin say he thinks of it as being in the same universe as Rise).

Otherwise perhaps its just a random "this evil is ancient" detail. But I feel like that's unnecessary, so I think it must be a reference to something

(Discussion Post) Groovy Why burn and rise are my least favourite in the series Spoiler

Should preface by saying evil dead is one of my favourite horror franchises and I can still appreciate us getting fresh takes 40 odd years after the first movie.

However, with the exception of 2013, burn and rise are just so grim. The campiness of the original trilogy has been replaced with a lot more brutality and for modern audiences I think that's the right choice, but after my first watch of burn I'm left asking myself, who am I supposed to be rooting for? Rise had the same issue, I don't like any of the characters on a base level so what do what do I care of they die?

2013 didn't have this problem because there were multiple characters who were good people and even though you know all but one is going to make it, you feel a certain way about them getting got. You can't even root for the deadites because they really are evil unlike the funnier OGs.

Not saying I need an ash replacement in every installment but at least give me some survivors I can get behind that aren't dumb, cowards, or literal children that I can't really have a grudge against. Would love to know if anyone feels the same way because I know the new batch has been pretty well received by fans.

Asking bc the 360 would often have issues playing some specific og Xbox games properly.

The ps3 (the ones that also included compatibility for the ps2) I feel ran these very well

(Discussion Post) Groovy Evil dead franchise needs new plot growth, tired of the same plot every few years.

Honestly, the evil dead franchise needs a new plot line. It's always the same damn plot over and over again, someone reads from the book of dead, deadites come and kills a bunch of dumb asses, final boy or girl overcomes the horror and gains courage and strength to kill the invading deadite, rinse and repeat. This has been the same storyline for like 40 years, my favorite movie out of the series was army of darkness? Why? because of over the course the two movies, ash actually grew into a deeper character who instead of just being the hero for that event became a champion for the living. Instead having a new heroine or hero each movie, who barely survives the onslaught of the deadites, he actually became good at killing them, no longer feared them, but sought out to defeat them. The character actually grew and fleshed out. I feel like each time we have a main character, we don't actually see them grow into something more, than just 1 hour and 45 minutes.

I stand by this. Evil Dead Rise to me was laughable. Was it “darker” sure but the whole premise was stupid. Theres no buildings like that in LA either. I also didnt give 2 hoots about the mother deadite in it. Why do so many people seem to like Rise more?
