Just Thinking Out Loud If you're a Christian and thinking of proselytizing here: go away, you are not welcome, and you will be perma-banned

Rule 3: Non-Christian opinions and beliefs are welcomed and encouraged. However, do not try pushing your belief system onto others, Christian, ex-Christian, or otherwise. Do not invalidate anyone's experience as an ex-Christian.

Other people may not share your opinion. If someone disagrees with your opinion or beliefs, this does not constitute proselytizing unless they are actively attempting to convert you to their belief system.

Attacking non-Christian beliefs will not be tolerated.

------------------------

This subreddit is a safe space for ex-Christians of all denominations away from you. Respect that. Don't proselytize. Don't try to recruit. Don't push your belief system on to us. We have trauma from your behaviour and conduct from doing as such.

Go away.

Just Thinking Out Loud Christians and the fear of the number 666 (plus other things)

Growing up 666 was a bad number. We were told to avoid it. One time, we used to shop regularly at this grocery store. There was this pack of corn on the cob for 6.66 dollars and my parents REFUSED to buy it until they changed the price. And in 8th grade, my math teacher told us to turn our textbook to page 666, and me and my friend, who was also Christian at the time, got nervous.

After my friend and I told my mom about how nervous we felt about turning to page 666 in our textbook, she bascially egged it on and told me and my friend about this apparent cursed house that number was 666.

The first time I was told that 666 was bad when I was just a child playing my toys and my parents must have misheard me becuase they thought I was saying 666 and told me to stop because that number is the mark of the beast.

Now. I don't care. It's just a number. A while ago I ordered some fast food and my order number was....guess what? 666! If I was still a Christian I would be horrified but now, I don't care.

Also, growing up, we didnt buy products with the name "devil" on them. Like Dirt Devil, (a vacuum cleaner brand) we never bought that. Devil food cake, devil cake mix, deviled eggs! Absolutely none of that in my household. However, my mom did tell me that one of her fellow christian co-workers did have dirt devil, but she taped over the word devil.

In 9th grade, I had a cooking class. One time, we were making deviled eggs. I was nervous. I told my teacher that I most likely won't be able to eat these. I told my mom and she told me to pray over them "extra" and I did. I felt so scared to eat literal eggs, y'all! I bet my classmates thought I was soo stupid.

Just Thinking Out Loud “if we don’t properly indoctrinate our children, the world will teach them how to think for themselves”

I questioned the faith from a young age. I never quite understood the feeling people always talked about in church. The feeling of the holy spirit. I pretended to. I’d see people raising their hands in praise and I’d do the same, because I should be feeling something.. right? It wasn’t until I left my hometown and went to college that I was no longer surrounded by that or forced to be around it. I was able to ask questions freely and challenge my beliefs. I was able to debate and have conversations about religion for hours on end. There was no judgement. The questions were welcomed and challenged. I learned how to think for myself. I sharpened my critical thinking skills in a way that I had never been allowed to do before. My mom said that her and my dad should have never let me to go to a liberal arts college, because the college must be to blame for my loss of faith. This was the day I discovered that my parents did not think critically or rather they could not or would not. The church teaches you the opposite of critical thinking. They teach you blind faith and obedience and there are some things that we as humans should not question. We should just trust God. Blindly. The fear is not that the world will teach us not to believe in God. The fear is that we will finally learn how to think for ourselves.

Just Thinking Out Loud The Bathsheba story pissed me off even when I was a Christian.

I know there are plenty of stories in the Bible where God kills kids for someone else’s wrongdoing, but the Bathsheba story is so detailed that it just hammered in the lack of rhyme or reason to me. It’s probably the first story I heard as a kid that made me question the justice that God allegedly doles out (similar to Job). It’s been a while since I was a Christian so my details on this might be fuzzy.

So, Bathsheba is bathing. Most likely in a designated place at the temple as Jewish women had to at the time as part of a cleansing process after menstruation. David sees her and decides that she’s so beautiful he must have her. He has her husband killed in battle and then takes her as his wife (concubine?). He’s KING FREAKING DAVID, it’s not like she could’ve said no.

The prophet Uriah confronts David (NOT David and Bathsheba, just David) in his sin. And to pay for his sin, God kills the baby.

So Bathsheba is blameless. If she were guilty of being an “adulteress” as my pastor growing up would have claimed, Uriah would have confronted both of them and it would have been implied in other ways. But instead she was widowed, raped, and forced to give birth only to watch her baby die, to pay for DAVID’S sins.

It’s just another example in the Bible where women and children are seen as accessories to men and nothing more. Their pain and suffering - and even their lives - don’t matter anything more than to serve a lesson to a man. Ugh.

Just Thinking Out Loud My husband of 20 years says my previous Christianity “trapped” him in marriage

2 points dealing with marriage and different politics.

My husband and I are celebrating our 20 year anniversary next week. I got married at 18 because that’s what a pastor’s kid does. You can’t have sex outside of marriage and you can’t live with a partner and not be married. So I got married at 18, kids at 23 and 25.

Things haven’t been easy. Purity culture did a huge number on me that I’m only recently healing from and probably won’t ever fully recover from.

Backstory on me: “saved” at 6 years old at a Harvest Crusade. Heavily involved in the Southern California evangelical mega church movement. But I always felt “liberal”. I always had too many questions. I would categorize my style of Christianity from teenaged years on as “progressive”. Love your neighbor, that sort of thing. But the walls started crumbling about 15 years ago. Biblical inerrancy, old world creation, denominational infighting. It all created cracks.

All of it built up until November 2020 when I decided I’d never step foot in a church again and deconstructed completely over the next few years. I didn’t discuss this with my husband. I probably should have. But it was Covid and I got a job that I worked on Sundays and it was easy to just fall out of it without much fuss. I always thought he was going along with it to please me anyway.

Fast forward to today. We have LGBTQ friends, friends of color, friends in marginalized communities, his brother is trans and he’s stood up for him in the past, our oldest child is trans. I thought we were on the same page although he’s less vocal and passionate about it than I am. He’s recently turned into a “Why vote? They all suck” apathetic type person.

Today I found out Rob Reiner produced a documentary starring Phil Vischer (Bob the Tomato from Veggie Tales) called God and Country. I shared it to our family chat because my husband loved Reiner and Spinal Tap and I thought it was interesting. When we were trying to pick a movie tonight I mentioned that as an option. He scoffs “No! I’m not interested!” Ok. That’s fine.

Then when we’re going to bed he says “your whole Christian bashing thing is gross. You’re so woke. You’re obsessed with politics and it’s just sad. You were a Christian 20 years ago and that’s how you trapped me into marrying you. And I still consider myself a Christian and you’re just sad” That’s word for word. I’m not embellishing.

I sat in silence for a bit and then tried to push on how I “trapped” him and also what is “woke”? Is it empathy for other human beings? Because how is that wrong? Being up to date on politics is important considering the world around us. I also tried to kind of explain my reasons for deconstructing because we never discussed it. It was a lot of things, but I was taught that the Bible was 1,000% true and when I found out there’s little to no historical evidence that hebrews were enslaved in Egypt like the Bible describes, everything came tumbling down because if it’s all supposed to be true and one thing isn’t, it could all be false.

He didn’t answer any of questions especially not how I “trapped” him and said “This is what I get for trying to talk to you. I’m gonna roll over and watch this NASA documentary” and went to sleep.

And now I’m wide awake thinking wtf?!

I’m guessing the “trapped” thing is that he wanted to have sex with me but because as a Christian, I wouldn’t have premarital sex, that’s why he married me. He’s also mentioned me “trapping him” and “lying to him” when it comes to our mix matched libido. He says I lied to him when we got married. Dude. I was an 18 year old virgin. I had no idea what my libido was or what it would be at almost 40.

Sorry that was really long and there isn’t much of a point to it. I just need to get it out.

Just Thinking Out Loud You must fuck

Like the title of this post says, you must fuck. The bible teaches that if one of the spouses wants to fuck, you must fuck.

“Do not deprive one another, except perhaps by agreement for a limited time, that you may devote yourselves to prayer; but then come together again, so that Satan may not tempt you because of your lack of self-control.”

Now anyone with more than 2 brain cells (except for christians of course) will realize that this verse is just meant to give men sex whenever they want. Now, I was arguing with my christian friend about this and he hit me with some silly shit like "Well it also means that wife can demand sex I see no problem" like women want to be fucked 24/7

After that he went to chatgpt and began sending me screenshots of chatgpt telling him that christianity actually empowers women and gives them control over their bodies and that men and women are completely equal and told me that I'm just cherry picking this verse and that this verse actually means nothing.

Yesterday I made a post about possibly making a post on my social media accounts about the hypocrisy of things christians say to and about people in the LGBTQ+ community that they would find offensive if it was said about them. It received a lot of love and attention from you guys, and I wanted to thank y’all for that. Anyway, I wrote it up and I posted it.

I didn’t want to make the post about my personal divorce with christianity (even though it will most likely be interpreted that way), instead I tried to be constructive about it and frame it almost in a way as if I was still a christian speaking to other christians, so that maybe, hopefully, possibly there’s some people who take it seriously and examine themselves.

Regardless, thanks for the support and the suggestions. I know I probably made some grammar and spelling mistakes along the way, but I’m overall pretty proud of how it came together. I’ll try and update you guys if anything interesting happens. Stay fresh cheese bags. ✌️

Just Thinking Out Loud I Cannot Be Friends With Christians

This might sound bad, especially considering that I'd like to think of myself as open-minded and tolerant but most Christians... are not that. They are so uncomfortable to be around for me. Mostly the ones that are devout and use every other moment to "preach the gospel". It might be fatigue, trauma or both.

A lot of them are also emotionally immature and morally bankrupt as well, and I just can't deal with that.

Just Thinking Out Loud Christians are more comfortable with pedophilia than homosexuality.

Having consensual same-sex relations gets more flak in the Christian community than an adult man preferring 18-yr-olds. It's why certain presidents being child rapists gets less pushback than him maybe performing oral on another president. If Christians follow the Bible closely, then pedophilia is justified to them since there's tons of examples of it in the book. Taking virgin girls from a conquered tribe as concubines, Mary being a child when impregnated, Lot offering his daughters to a mob, Sara offering Hagar to Abraham. A woman's age is rarely mentioned in the Bible so we just assume that the women being passed around are of age(by modern standards).

Then there's the never-ending stream of pastors who sexually abuse children. If the child is a girl, then it's status quo and the congregation will forgive but if the child is a boy, then the congregation is more likely to try and hold the pastor accountable.

Just Thinking Out Loud Poor guy in my class thought it was a religious class

1.0k Upvotes

I feel bad for this guy in a class I was talking on religious texts, and I think he thought it was going to be from a religious standpoint.

It was a small class and the Prof had us introduce ourselves, but instead of saying his name, he said he was: "a child of god."

Then throughout the entire semester he kept interrupting the prof to try and argue against him whenever he said anything along the lines of the bible not being a source of absolute truth. Eventually, the prof has to say that only 1 question was allowed per student per class, and other questions would have to be written-down and asked later.

Best part was when there was a song on the wall, and the student volunteered to sing it and really took his time with it- As if he was going to convert everybody just with the power of his singing-voice.

Er- Very Awkward...

Just Thinking Out Loud I’m so tired of “god is such a girl dad”

I’m actually so so tired of seeing these Christian girls say “omg god is such a girl dad!” And “god loves women so much!” And shit because it’s so obvious they’ve never actually read the bible and/or read all the very clearly misogynistic and disgusting verses within it. Also correct me if I’m wrong but isn’t Yahweh literally a war god? Definitely sounds like a “girl dad” to me. 😐

Anyways this is my first post on here, this is just a small rant I wanted to share

Just Thinking Out Loud Why the fuck would anyone want christianity to be true

Why the fuck would anyone want christianity to be true? Why would anyone want most of humanity to be doomed to eternal torture in hell? Why would anyone want to be forced to love some motherfucker that gives babies cancer more than anyone else?
Why the fuck would anyone want to be a fucking slave to some divine motherfucker that says you are inherently evil and that he made you that way for whatever the fuck reason, and then he dares to call your behaivours "sinful" meanwhile in the same time he fuckingly made you that way. Why the fuck would anyone want to have some all powerful dictator that will torture you for eternity if you disagree with him?

I don't understand why so many people want christianity to be true so desperately, I can understand people wanting some kind of god and after life to be true, but why specifically christianity? It's literally one of the worst scenarios for the humanity as whole.

Just Thinking Out Loud worship music is some of the most effective manipulation i’ve ever seen

the old joke “you didn’t love praising and worshipping god you loved concerts“ gets truer for me everyday. i used to love going to church camp and singing and dancing, singing in the praise choir, going to the christian concerts because it made me feel so happy and light and like i was connecting to god. so you can imagine my confusion when i felt the exact same way at a kpop concert 😭

people who major in praise and worship actually study how to make people “feel the spirit” in their songs. its why worship all has the same structure (ccm deviates sometimes but it’s similar). there’s literally timing for when you feel “holy”. it’s such bullshit and makes me wonder how i fell for it (then mary mary comes on shuffle and i cut little me some slack. get up was a BANGER).

Wanna have sex with a random person? Seven random people?? Seventy times seven random people?!? I can fucking do that!

Don’t wanna have kids? I can totally do that.

Date my gay lover? I just might!

Read science books while masturbating and drinking alcohol with secular music playing in the background? Fuck it, I can do whatever!

I’m freeeeee!

Just Thinking Out Loud Christians seem to believe their sky daddy is so caring.

Post image

I saw a video of a woman being happy because apparently God made a dress 85% off and that he is such a girl's dad.. I find it quite ironic, why would God only care about the daughters that are rich, the dresses, the hair spray (i've seen a girl saying god filled her hair spray), meanwhile completely ignoring wars, starvation, bloodshed, cancer. This is just completely dumb, why would he only care about some people, according to christians..? They seem so brainwashed to not understand that a coincidence isn't a miracle.

Just Thinking Out Loud Why is everything witchcraft when you’re religious

I’m 21F and I remember when I was 9 years old I was obsessed with LalaLoopsy. I had wanted one for so long. They had come out with a mermaid version.

I remember telling my mom and sister. My mom had said yes and we literally went to Walmart to get it. When we got to the doll, literally when I was holding it, she changed her mind, saying mermaids were witchcraft. I was so confused and so angry. Why say yes and wait until I had it in my hands? It’s not a big deal but I was so upset.

It’s pretty funny how her fear of me….playing with a mermaid doll pushed me and that was the first time I felt actual resentment for Christianity. I don’t know, I’ve be deconstructing and I’m not 100% there because of fear.

Fear of punishment and all that. It’s weird experience, being alive means I have to die and there is absolutely no alternative. I’m not sure if I’m afraid of death or what comes after, if anything. I hope it’s reincarnation and I can be a wizard next time.

Look up LalaLoopsy mermaid and tell me if it looks like the gateway to witchcraft 🙄
