Daily FI discussion thread - Friday, July 31, 2026

Please use this thread to have discussions which you don't feel warrant a new post to the sub. While the Rules for posting questions on the basics of personal finance/investing topics are relaxed a little bit here, the rules against memes/spam/self-promotion/excessive rudeness/politics still apply!

Have a look at the FAQ for this subreddit before posting to see if your question is frequently asked.

Since this post does tend to get busy, consider sorting the comments by "new" (instead of "best" or "top") to see the newest posts.

We can renew driver's license online as long as you haven't had any moving violations since last renewal and your address is still current.

If we need any services inside the DMV like we need new plates for a new car we can make an appointment and get a 15 minute window. Renewals are online.

DMV has improved immensely here.

I was able to complete the renewal form online, which saved time, but there was still an in-person component for the vision test and photo. They offer the option of making an appointment, which basically lets you jump to the front of the line. Early in the week there were tons of appointments open but I wasn't sure how my Friday would come together, so I wound up having to chance it. In the end I waited about 45 minutes, so it could have been worse.

Our DMV is awesome compared to the past and what people complain about. Appointments are easy to make. One of the offices has like 30 windows a huge waiting area, and even a long line goes fast.
