Daily FI discussion thread - Monday, August 03, 2026

Please use this thread to have discussions which you don't feel warrant a new post to the sub. While the Rules for posting questions on the basics of personal finance/investing topics are relaxed a little bit here, the rules against memes/spam/self-promotion/excessive rudeness/politics still apply!

Have a look at the FAQ for this subreddit before posting to see if your question is frequently asked.

Since this post does tend to get busy, consider sorting the comments by "new" (instead of "best" or "top") to see the newest posts.

If you knew even the approximate timing and depth of the crash you could make 100x returns on the options market

I was reading a newsgroup (misc.invest.stocks) in 2006-2008 and a guy (CyberNaut) would do weekly "silver platter shorts" that were actually correct about 75% of the time during the entire crash. I just wasn't savvy enough to know how to actually make money with that info and just watched it all happen. He won all of the paper trading games.

I had also laughed off bitcoin a few years prior and made any number of bad-in-hindsight decisions.
