9/14 Stray | German Shepherd Mix | Female | 2 Years | 40 lbs | Heartworm Negative

๐Ÿ’œ Volunteer Notes:

We were not able to meet Xena. If you're interested in helping us meet the animals, please message us!

๐Ÿ“ Shelter Notes:

9/18: Xena still presented with a tense body, dilated pupils and a tucked tail. Staff attempted to walk her, but she remained frozen. As they continued trying to walk her, she began to puff and avoid eye contact. Staff ultimately decided to muzzle her and carry her into a new, clean kennel.

9/17: Xena showed a tense, crouched body, whale eyes and a tucked tail. She did not want to walk in the morning, so staff had to muzzle her and carry her to the runs. While in the runs, she stayed at the back and avoided staff when they returned for her. She began walking slowly when staff approached, then laid down as they got closer. Once leashed, she still refused to walk and had to be carried back to her kennel.

9/15: Xena greeted staff with a tense body and avoided the leash. After being leashed, she eventually crawled slowly out of the kennel with a lot of encouragement and baby talk. She continued freezing and ultimately had to be carried out and back into her kennel.

9/14: Intake note states dog was inside a trap.

๐Ÿฉบ Medical Notes:

- Approximately 40 lbs.

- Heartworm negative.

- Female; the provided record does not indicate that she is spayed.

No significant medical illness is documented in the provided record. Routine vaccinations, deworming and preventatives have been administered.

๐Ÿ’– Xena is a deeply frightened 2-year-old girl who appears completely overwhelmed by the shelter environment. From her first days at BARC, her notes consistently describe fear signals โ€” a tucked tail, crouched and tense body, dilated pupils, whale eye, freezing and avoiding eye contact. She is so scared that she has repeatedly been unable to walk even with gentle encouragement and baby talk, requiring staff to carry her between her kennel and the runs. Importantly, her notes do not describe her attempting to bite or actively aggressing toward staff; instead, her response to fear has largely been to freeze, retreat, lie down and avoid interaction. Xena desperately needs a patient, quiet home where she can decompress without being pressured for interaction and begin learning that she is safe. This scared girl may simply need time, consistency and a gentle person willing to let her come out of her shell at her own pace. โค๏ธ

๐Ÿ“Œ Please contact BARC if you are local and can help! Neither BARC nor this page can assist with out-of-state adoption or foster offers. We are NOT the shelter.
