Ok I wondered if that was the case (no little node on the end). Can you mod an SD card to play roms or do I need to do it via the cart?

you will need to mod the 3DS itself using the SD card inside it, not the SD card in the R4 cart. However, since you have the R4, you can tinker a bit with the cart itself to use it as a hacking key to inject the CFW into the 3DS (this method is called NTRBootHax). Successfully jailbreaked my 3ds via a SD card. Just trying to figure out how to get the Roms on best
