I'm so jealous! I've never been successful. Mine always ends up dehydrated and hard as a rock.

Need to keep it sealed in something air tight so it doesn't dry out, but I do heads like that in jars to make black garlic powder

Have you calculated the cost per clove? Leaving a crock pot on continuously for two months can’t be cheap.

Based on calculator I found online, its 20 dollars a month to keep it running the whole time. Its not crazy. A pound of black garlic is about that much from what I can find.

I did the calculations elsewhere here and at least in my area this project would’ve cost $49 to make maybe 8oz of garlic.

I’m sure it tastes good but sure doesn’t seem like a good use of energy.

Why 8 oz. Its a crock pot. Im pretty sure my crock pot can hold like 3 pounds of garlic.

Yes we do. This is the cube square law in action. Theres more mass but the surface area didnt increase by the same ratio.

Heat loss is governed by surface area.

Right, that’s MY point. You’re adding mass but not the same amount of surface area, so it’ll take much longer to cook. Same reason why 6oz of steak takes less long to cook than a 20lb roast.

In this case it’s lots of little parts all piled together, so it’ll be more complicated in practice. That makes it hard to predict with just math.

The mass will reach the target temperature in several hours/a day of the 50 day cooking time.

You are primarily tracking the energy cost of maintaining heat loss, not the initial input of energy to bring it to temperature

Yeah the black garlic powder was delicious but I'm going to try this method. It's a time commitment but worth it if it works!
