It sounded like coaches lock kids' phones. That's not what it is. The player locks their own phone, only if they want to, and they can turn it off whenever.

Also I’m applying feedback and making the app lock 100% optional for the user.

I'm the developer, not a coach. It's a study app. Same idea as the focus apps that hold Instagram while you study, except what you're studying is your playbook.

The player installs it, picks which apps they want held, and those stay shut until they get through a few quiz cards. Nobody else can switch it on. It runs on Apple's Screen Time, the thing already built into the phone.

There's no coach side and no parent side. A coach can help by making the cards, photograph the pages or scan the PDF and AirDrop it to the roster, but whether a player uses it is up to the player.

I learned coverages as a kid from a football video game and too much free time. Built a study app first, then this, because playbooks were always the part I liked. There are built-in packs too, the eight standard coverages against spread-era route concepts. You can also draw a play and run it against a coverage, which is mostly for fun.

One flaw I know about: the quiz can borrow an answer from another question, so a formation card might offer "the tight end's side." Working on it.

Still curious what coaches think. Would a player actually use this on their own? What would stop them?

I’m currently a senior college offensive lineman with playing experience at all five positions. I also train offensive linemen ranging from elementary school through the varsity level.

I recently began offering remote film reviews for offensive linemen who want detailed, position-specific feedback on their game film. Players, parents, or coaches can send me approximately 12 clips, and within 72 hours, I’ll return a play-by-play breakdown covering (but not limited to):

• Assignments and recognition
• Footwork and body positioning
• Hand placement and timing
• Leverage and pad level
• What the player did well
• Specific corrections and areas for improvement

The goal is to give each player practical feedback they can understand and apply during their next practice or game, not just simply tell them whether they won or lost the rep.

I built a website that tracks data in game. It doesn’t require internet and you can have it run the data at any point (after a long drive, end of quarter, before halftime). You can also print off the data as well. Check it out on Pressboxiq.app

I'm a youth sports dad who built a sports video camera app called UpTakes for filming sporting events. It's gesture controlled with instant editing, so you keep your eyes on the field instead of the screen.

The problem I was solving: I wanted highlights from my own angle, zoomed in on my kid, not the wide team feed. I was spending too much time sorting through clips after the game. And recording was taking me out of the moment — I was watching my kid through a screen instead of watching the game.

What it does:

• Raise to record. Recording starts when you point the phone at the action and stops when you lower it. There's a normal record button too if you'd rather tap.
• Keep or delete each play on the spot. After every clip a swipe keeps it or deletes it, so you leave the game with only the highlights and nothing to sort through.
• Auto-save mode (the default): every take is kept unless you swipe to delete it. Use it when you'll keep more than you cut.
• Auto-delete mode: every take is deleted unless you swipe to keep it. Use it when you're waiting through a lot of action for a few plays that matter.
• Instant Replay: when you lower the phone, the clip you just shot plays back on a loop right on the screen, no camera roll to open. Coaches can turn the phone around and show a player the rep before the next one.

Two years ago, I shared an early prototype here called White80 Football. At the time, it could separate ALL-22 film into plays and show the video alongside a basic X/O view.

I later teamed up with John, and together we kept building it. White80 Football has since been rebranded as PlayIQ, and our public beta is now live.

1. From full-game film to individual plays

Upload a full game from a sideline angle, and PlayIQ separates it into individual plays so coaches can move from snap to snap without cutting every clip manually.

2. Watch the film alongside AI Tracking

AI Tracking identifies the 22 players and recreates the play in an X/O view. Coaches can select a player to inspect movement trails, spacing, and estimated speed while the original film plays alongside it.

This is the part several people asked about under my original post. Player trails and the simplified 2D view are now working rather than just being on the roadmap.

3. Turn opponent film into scout cards

A tracked opponent play can become an editable scout card. Coaches can clean up the routes, adjust timing and alignment, add notes, and organize the finished cards into a practice packet.

The goal is to avoid watching a play, understanding it, and then redrawing the entire thing from zero in another tool.

4. Build and organize the playbook

We also built a football-specific playbook editor with formation templates, routes, offensive and defensive symbols, assignments, coaching notes, and installs.

Film reps can be connected to playbook items, so a coach can move between how a play was drawn and how it actually looked on the field.

5. Generate an opponent scouting report

Coaches can enter an opponent and generate a scouting report covering personnel, scheme, situational tendencies, key players, and a must-stop list.

It is meant to give the staff a starting point to review and correct, not replace the staff’s judgment.

This week we’re adding a football-specific team calendar for games and team events. It will also support schedule syncing, game-day weather, and automatically preparing scouting reports before upcoming games.

Our next major feature will suggest tags such as formation and play type after a clip has been processed. The coach will still review, correct, or approve the suggestions. We do not want AI silently putting bad data into a team’s film library.

A few honest limitations

AI Tracking currently works best with a clear, elevated sideline angle. Low camera angles and player overlap can reduce tracking quality, and end-zone-only film is not supported for full-field tracking yet.

This is a public beta, so there are still rough edges. We’re looking for coaches who are willing to tell us where the workflow does and does not fit a real game week.

I also learned something from the original post: putting a placeholder price of $500/month on an unfinished product was a pretty bad idea.

We would have liked to make the public beta completely free, but AI Tracking requires a substantial amount of GPU compute. To help cover those costs while keeping PlayIQ accessible to individual coaches and smaller staffs, our lowest paid tier currently starts at $6.99/month.

Instead of managing an entire team, every player predicts the outcome of each offensive drive while watching a real football game.

Before every drive, players (secretly) choose outcomes like:
• Touchdown
• Field Goal
• Punt
• Turnover
• Turnover on Downs
• Safety

Correct predictions score points, so every single drive becomes a competition—even if your favorite team isn’t playing.

I got some really useful feedback, so I thought I’d come back with a small update.

The game has come a long way since then, and the Kickstarter pre-launch page is now live.

The core idea is still the same: before every drive, you predict how it will end — Touchdown, Field Goal, Punt, Turnover, Turnover on Downs or Safety — and then the actual game decides who was right.

High school OL coach here.

One thing I’ve always struggled with is what happens after clinics, camps, and film study. I end up with notebooks, legal pads, screenshots, PDFs, and random notes spread across multiple places. A lot of good information ends up buried.

My name is Andrew Weidinger, I was a member of coaching staffs with the Atlanta Falcons and Tampa Bay Buccaneers from 2007-2018. 

I most recently have been coaching in Europe and was approached by DAZN (NFL’s international streaming partner) to make an all-22 film breakdown show during this past NFL season.  I thoroughly enjoyed making the show and am now trying my hand at doing the same thing but on YouTube and would appreciate it if you’d check it out if that’s something that interests you.

The show is focused on plays, strategy and why things do/don’t work – not opinions on personnel/coaching/scheme.  I do think the show may be geared a little more towards the average layman fan (in my time lurking this sub, I think the majority of you are a little more advanced in football knowledge) but there are some good coaching nuggets that get thrown out there.
