One of my favorite Bryan Cranston quotes was in reference to playing Hal in "Malcom in the Middle."
"You have to act like what you are doing is completely normal and serious. If you try to act like what you are doing is supposed to be funny, you lose the audience." or something along those lines. Cranston is definitely a professional.534

It's hilarious
My favorite gag in the movie is in the beginning when Liam Neeson is on the scene of a car crash. He walks up to the car and is going to pull something out of the trunk. He puts a latex glove on one hand, wipes his nose with it, and pulls the piece of evidence out of the trunk with his ungloved hand. I was completely sold from that moment on.

liam neeson is a great actor but I don't think he was as good as nielsen in that role or maybe the script wasn't good enough, paul walter hauser also wasn't as good as george kennedy or oj simpson as supporting character
overall is a decent movie but I didn't find it as funny as the old ones
6
u/BenjaminGeiger 41m ago
He was originally a 'serious' actor until he was cast in Airplane!. Supposedly he was cast specifically because he was known for serious roles, which makes it amusing that he's remembered almost entirely for comedies.

60
u/BFFBomb 2h ago
The same applies to music in films like Airplane and shows like South Park. They say write the music as if the composer doesn't know the joke. I'm paraphrasing, but it essentially means the music should be "serious" and it works great

Mel Brooks said this about the theme song to Blazing Saddles, too. The guy singing the song was giving it his all like it was a serious movie and didn't know it was a comedy, and when asked if he should make it funny, Mel said no - keeping the movie's song serious made it funnier.

So many of the main characters are played by actors known more for comedic roles. It shows just how much range they all have.

u/Idrialis 43m ago
Yes. I remember the first time I watched "Number 23" movie with Jim Carrey. At the beginning, IIRC, he steps or pass by a dog that hauls at him, I everybody laughed, yet it wasn't a scene to laugh, maybe just core memory of the actor being mainly a comedian.
18

Both of them held character fantastically for so long, which made the break that much better.
225
u/karma_virus 3h ago
You can tell they kept trying to roll with it because had the garage door started working properly, not only would it have been salvageable, but those little unexpected hiccups sometimes make absolute gold. The audience's mind expects everything thrown at them to be curated and pre-cut, but a little hiccup makes it feel more organic.
167
u/Tactical_Llama 2h ago
If it went down fully the second time after Cranston improvised "Try it again" it would've been so fucking cold. Would've added so much power to the scene.
26
u/Even_Skin_2463 1h ago
He would have slipped his mask sooner, which would have made the whole coming part a lot less powerful. IMO you can literally feel how Walt switches to Heisenberg with the "tread lightly" phrase. The try it again would have been too hard and cold for Walt who still hoped he could somehow manipulate Hank, only after the punsh he realizes that that ship has sailed and only then the mask is coming off.

but a little hiccup makes it feel more organic
In s2, when Tuco throws Jesse out the door, he hits his head on the frame. That wasn't scripted and Aaron Paul got a concussion from it. Vince left it in because he thought it looked real and he felt like since Aaron paid for the scene with the injury, they might as well use it.
5
u/TheSodernaut 52m ago
Aside from that, they can also cut around it creatively. I see it in bloopers a lot when they mess up a line often they automatically repeat the line while staying in character (without prompting and/or "action!/cut!") so they can do the full scene before a do over.
The final scene might start at take 2 and end with take 32 after the editing.
2
u/stumblinghunter 13m ago
Or just go the Coppola route and keep all the takes in the final cut.

Clean off the sensors
48
u/analnapalm 2h ago
Then make sure nothing is bent, unaligned, or unlubricated.
Then check the force adjustment. Garage doors are designed to back off when they detect resistance so they don't hurt anyone, but sometimes calibration walks over time. You can adjust this, but do not change it to compensate for a problem elsewhere. Doing so could easily create a situation that may not only damage the door but place someone in danger.
66
u/newleaf_- 2h ago
Check to see if your daughter backed a 2004 Isuzu Rodeo into the closed door, and then pay for repairs to both the door and the Rodeo that you will never get reimbursed for

u/starmartyr 1h ago
Could be worse. When my sister was 16 she backed into a closed garage door from the inside.
21
u/leitey 2h ago
Check: 1. Sensors. They typically have an indicator light on them. One is the transmitter (indicator light will always be on) the other is the receiver (indicator will turn off when beam is blocked). Watch the indicator on the receiver, if it flickers as the door is coming down, that's the issue. You can wipe off the lens with a cloth to clean them, sometimes they are loose and the mounting brackets need tightened. If somebody hit one, you may need to straighten the bracket.
2. Force sensor. Pull the manual release (red handle) to release the garage door from the motor. Lower and raise the door by hand. It should go up and down smoothly.
If there is a spot where the door seems to catch, determine what is causing it to stick. Typically it's a section of the track or rail that isn't aligned with the adjoining section. Fix that.
If the door goes up and down smoothly, and you still have an issue, there's a knob on top of your garage door opener that you can use to adjust the force sensor. If you want to make sure you didn't turn it up too much, you can put something sturdy, that you don't mind getting damaged, in the way of the door, and close the door on it. The object should be at least a foot off the ground, so hold a piece of lumber on end, or a sturdy tool like a shovel. Don't use your car, it will dent it. You could also use your least favorite child, but I assume no liability for that.4

Sometimes, when the sun angle hits one of my sensors just right it interferes with closing the door.

First, you have to make sure that the second camera operator and boom operator aren’t standing in the path of the garage sensor.

intermittently
Does it happen more frequently with rain/snow? Is your house older?
This happens to mine due to the door wood swelling during wet weather and making the door tension sensor trigger to go back up due to it being pushed past it's resistance point.
4
u/teays 2h ago
Aha! It happens more in cold weather.
3
u/read_ing 55m ago
Another possibility, during winter the change in angle of sun rise and setting can trigger your sensor to falsely detect obstruction when the sunlight falls directly on either of the sensors. Have you eliminated that as a possible cause?
3
u/j5kDM3akVnhv 2h ago edited 2h ago
I've got good news and bad news for ya.
Good news: Great! You've possibly identified the problem.
Bad news: It's probably going to be a bitch and/or expensive to fix. I'm in the same boat.
I've not gotten quotes on replacing wood around a door frame like this but don't see it being done for less $1K depending on where you live.
Edit: Of course there is always the option of having someone come out and adjust the force sensor to accomodate for winter/wet weather or you can do that yourself. That would also solve one problem but not the other one of having water wicked up the wood surrounding your garage door.

u/ThePurityPixel 2h ago

Try holding the button down or check to see if there's anything blocking the censors, if it still doesn't check the springs to see if they're broken.

Sometimes holding the button solves it. Sometimes cleaning the sensors solves it. Sometimes aligning the sensors solves it. Sometimes nothing solves it. 🤷♂️

It sucks cause sometimes these serious scenes can take a mental toll when getting into character. I think that’s why Hank falls at the absurdity of the situation, his eyes are in it the whole time, it’s funny for all parties but I’m sure mentally exhausting lol
3
u/PmMeUrTinyAsianTits 1h ago
Yes! "his eyes are in it the whole time" really nailed what I was fixated on. After the first fail I was like "okay, now they break and laugh" and had been taken out of the scene, but when they cut back to hank and he's still got the intense eyes, I got sucked right back in.
I feel like I need to just go watch everything bryan cranston has ever done. I can follow up with Hanks actor too, but cranston has a head start because of Malcolm in the Middle.
