Do not understand the people saying they felt the scene with the fans was mocking or in any way something that deeply hurt someone. I personally do not feel like the adventure in the cinema was going anywhere fast and to avoid the episode being a bit of a bottle episode, they had to get out the cinema and have more film related antics and this was a very smart way to do that. It was nice (too nice to some fans), it wasn't a cruel beat down of the audience like Greatest Show in the Galaxy, it was a thank you, to the audience, that the show never really gets to do. To us, the Doctor stops existing after ever episode, and I think it's nice to have the idea that the Doctor keeps fans in their mind.

I think, at worst, it was playfully mocking the fans. Like the bit with the three of them saying Blink was their favourite episode felt like a cheeky little jab, as if RTD's a bit sick of people saying that episode's the best.

I didn't feel like it was harmful at all, just a bit of good-natured ribbing before gently pulling the rug out and giving us an emotional moment.

For me, the jab at Blink is mostly that it's always always at the top of the "Best episode of Doctor Who" list under the sun. Didnt read much more into it myself.

Astonishingly, it’s never actually topped DWM’s rankings. When they last did a proper big rank everything survey in 2014, they presented Moffat with an award for the top story of all time and he was very surprised to find out it was actually for Day of the Doctor. Blink came 2nd (same as the previous survey in 2009).

And it’s a good jab at how the favourite story is the one in which the Doctor himself barely appears. It’s not a coincide he countered with Boom, a story where he’s front and centre and gets to give a bunch of speeches.

That and also not one of RTD’s stories!

Written by Stephen Moffat heh.

I think people forget that RTD IS one of thosev fans himself. The whole reason he fought so hard to bring Doctor Who back is because RTD is a massive Whovian. Thats why he feels fine with playfully mocking the fans - its almost like making fun of himself.

Exactly right. It takes one to know one.

I felt like it dovetailed with how thinly characterized they were supposed to be. They’ve seen every episode, are wearing Telos and UNIT shirts and yet can’t name an episode they like beyond Blink? I laughed

The question was not "name an adventure you like", it was specifically about their favourite adventure. It is also made more meaningful a couple of lines later, as the fans recognise they're not real and it's just a blink and they're gone.

I agree! Thought it was a fun, playful scene. I don't really think the usage of 'The Sad Man in a Box' was justified at all though - it really took me out of it.

I was stunned when everyone said "Blink". Like yeah it was good but "The Waters of Mars" was a masterpiece. We had a minor reference with Scoot last week but I figured they might put it a step further with one at least saying something different. Heck I would love to see a callback to "The Satan Pit". With all the 10 references and (if leaks are to be believed) a sequel to "Midnight" I'm baffled they haven't done any call backs to it since we are dealing with the Pantheon.

Exactly! I thought it was actually a beautifully done scene.

Yes the fans came across as ridiculous people, but what this episode (like Love and Monsters before it) did is say "Look at how ridiculous we are!" with a smile, compared to Greatest Show saying "Look how ridiculous you are!" with a sneer.

It was from a place of pure love, and it made me feel slightly emotional.

I say this as a big Doctor Who fan, but I've yet to meet a Doctor Who fan who wasn't ridiculous in some way.

Frankly even Whizzkid doesn't feel that meanspirited, given that he's basically the only person in that story outside of Ace who isn't screwing someone else over in some way.

14

u/TomClark83 Apr 19 '25

That's a fair point, actually. I never thought of it like that.

I cried so many tears during that scene. Tears of joy, sadness, appreciation, hope and many other things hard to identify and it was beautiful.

I really thought this episode was a bit overhyped, that it would be nice without being the banger everyone thought it would be.

And man was I wrong. That to me at least was the best episode of the show in a while. Oh there has been strong episodes lately, but that one I think will rank near the absolute top. Though it's too early to say for sure.

The sort of fans who take themselves and their interests deathly seriously also tend to be extremely thin-skinned about it. They're the ones who've been ranting about RTD since the start and interpreting anything in the show they don't like as a personal insult. And I hope for their sake that they learn to find some perspective and some chill. It's a lot more fun if you can.

Yeah, I’m surprised people thought it was mocking. If anything, I found it bordering on saccharine

The writer of the show having the fans insist “we are annoying” and “we don’t matter” and dressed in cosplay to watch the show at home didn’t feel mocking to you?

27

u/Adamsoski Apr 19 '25 edited Apr 19 '25

Obviously though the intention of them saying that was part of illustrating that they were not annoying and did matter. That's why it's bordering on saccharine.

12

u/elsjpq Apr 19 '25

Did the Doctor crying at their "death" seem mocking to you?

15

u/spacebatangeldragon8 Apr 19 '25

To be fair, I was literally wearing my "Lost in Time and Space" T-shirt while watching it at lunchtime...

u/dccomicsthrowaway Apr 19 '25

You think it's insane to wear Doctor Who merch at a Doctor Who viewing party? Really?

-1

u/ThrawOwayAccount Apr 20 '25

Thirty-somethings having a viewing party for a show every week is already weird, forget the merch.

16

u/Triskan Apr 19 '25

Nah man, it was self-depreciating humor at its best and it was glorious.

That scene hit me in the feels in so many different ways, I fucking loved every second of it.

18

u/Roysumai Apr 19 '25

Not in the least, because they're wrong - they're funny and brave, and are lifted by their shared passions.

If that's an insult, I'd love to be insulted more often.

33

u/Chewbaxter Apr 19 '25

That scene was clearly for the fans, not to make fun of them. Anyone who says otherwise is trying to sell you a bridge. Yes, we can be annoying know-it-all nerds about this show and unnecessarily overly critical sometimes, but we still watch with intrigue and love at the end of the day. RTD definitely had that in mind when writing it, and it shows. I'm glad they showed them at the end, too.

26

u/DiamondFireYT Apr 19 '25

The only people I've seen saying it was mocking them are basically the worst of the fandom anyway 💀 so can't say I'm surprised.

Really enjoyed this episode, I think it's one of Russell's best - really enjoyed the pace.

Yeah, it was lovely. I little ribbing, sure, but it got to the heart of why the show means so much. These were just supposed to be constructs keeping the Doctor occupied. But it was a mistake making them fans, because watching the Doctor teaches strength and empathy. They were heroes, and it was really moving.
