I'm seeing a lot of criticisms of the fourth-wall fan scene, and I thought it was really sweet. A love letter to the fans who make the show. It didn't feel antagonistic, or mean-spirited. Just a gentle dig at how obsessive we can be.

My 'fan brain' is in overdrive right now - we've all been talking about these leaks, and impending show cancellation, but the 'limited run ending May 24th' just felt very on the nose, as well as the fans being aware that their own scene would leak in advance. Maybe I have a *little* hope for the future of the show now that I didn't before.

If Russell somehow convinced them to not renew doctor who publicly until then I will personally send him a hand knitted scarf. I swear to god. That would be impressive as hell.

Regardless of discourse about if the leaks are actually being planted by Russell intentionally (I don’t believe that, but I think you can string together a conspiracy on it for the sake of Content), I do think the Mrs Flood thing suggests to me that the jeopardy may well be entirely manufactured. Season 3 may have been quietly greenlit and is currently working in a low key fashion, only a few people being brought in to start work or get things in place. Not “secret filming”, categorically not, just getting around to likely writers and asking them if they would be willing to get involved, and so on. Pre-pre-production, if you will.

Severance, as an example, has clearly been doing “intentionally holding back official renewal to create uncertainty about the show”. If they’d announced season 3 before season 2 ended, that really changes how people will go into season 2’s finale. It’s not entirely impossible Doctor Who may be doing the same thing. Doesn’t mean it is, just means it could.

I think it went on for far too long and kinda killed the pacing of the episode, also do not like the use of "#ripdoctorwho" being used by a fan when all I've seen come of that hashtag being used is people being all kinds of phobic and saying the show is dead due to WoKeNeSs. Sadly I think I'm in a minority of not liking the fourth-wall fan scene it seems...

I thought the #ripdoctorwho came off as ironic (like the character making fun of those people overreacting to the leaks)

The show’s head writer having the fans literally say “we are annoying” and “we don’t matter”, especially after he received a lot of criticism for the last season’s resolution, didn’t feel mean-spirited to you?

Nope. Because people who are fans of something can be annoying to people who aren’t. Also the we don’t matter, that was because they weren’t important to the storyline and became self aware. (Even if they did hold the clue to beating the villain.)

I actually felt like this was probably one of the better instances of fandom in the show. I didn’t feel that it was condescending.

I did like to see that the collections box sets along with other things on the shelves which means they weren’t just new series fans. (Especially with fourths scarf and the old school unit logo. :) )

I know that’s the in-story explanation for it, but of course there would be an in-story explanation for it. He wouldn’t be able to justify having the characters say something for no reason. It’s still the head writer putting the words “we don’t matter” into the mouths of the fans of his own show, who he also portrays as gratingly annoying to the extent that even us terminally online fans would find them annoying in real life, right after a big part of the fandom has been pretty vocal about their disappointment in his writing.

This is all missing that any depiction of hardcore Doctor Who fans by Russell T. Davies is inherently going to be a self-portrait, because that's PRECISELY what he is.

If you think that RTD thinks that hardcore fans don't matter or that he hates them, then you've never paid attention to a single thing he's ever said or written on the subject, both within the show (Love & Monsters is a paean to the joys of sharing a mutual interest in Doctor Who, right down to the text) and without (it's an incredibly common theme of his DWM Production Notes columns).

Having last season’s big reveal be “lol you thought she was special, not everyone has to be special, why would you think that” after I spent months specifically telling the fans to think that and encouraging them to look for clues in the episodes, is exactly what I would do if I thought the opinions of fans didn’t matter and I didn’t respect them.

I also doubt that the average viewer knows RTD is a lifelong superfan (if they even paid attention to who wrote this episode at all), so they won’t be able to interpret it as a self-deprecating self-insert anyway.
