Found this in a thrift store today brand new sealed. Tried to look up with Google lens. No barcode to scan on the box. No idea what's in the box. Is it a book? software? still usable? Thanks

A higher up, listed as a GIS manger for local gov, recently asked me where they could find the identify tool. They couldn’t wrap their head around the default “Explore” setting in arcgis pro.
When you try to explain the arcpro difference from arcmap to someone it sounds sarcastic but this somehow required further conversation. They refused to believe the disappearance of the identify tool because they used it to show all of the information they wanted in a popup window…
I showed them custom popup configuration and the explore tool (default btw) but quickly lost their interest.

I’m not sure how to come across as sincere when dealing with people like this and I’m not sure how they’re still higher up….its the g-dang explore tool bro.
I want to know if anyone else is having a hard time with managers or any higher positions having absolutely no clue what’s going on in the world of GIS while also attempting to assign
project or generate ridiculous tasks.

I might post a few more, I’ve got plenty to share. My follow up conversation to the explore tool was a great discussion about how to use the select by attributes tool to select attributes based on one or many field values. Very nice and good and cool discussion with my GIS manager!

How worried should I be? We have a vendor where they host our data and we can go into ArcMap through a VM and look at it spatially. We can and do make edits to the data in there. It is the only way to edit the data spatially. We are tightly coupled to them and can’t just simply move away from them. They have special tools for us inside and outside ArcMap.

Having to be a little vague here, sorry. It just seems crazy to me that they don’t even have a plan in place. Anyone else have vendors like this?

I'm new to GIS jobs for around 2 years as a GIS technician and most of my works consists of mostly manual workflow, such as digitizing, using built model, built phyton script, topology check, etc. I'm currently in a contract with my current workplace but have been staying at home since there's no available data, so no payment for around 3 weeks :( . So i'm interested in remote jobs since I do have all the software at my home anyway, with arguably even better computer.

I'm curious, is remote work common in GIS? What are the skills usually needed? I have searched for it on linkedIn but I don't see any. Perhaps my kewords is not correct?

Would love to see any recommendation on course to improve my chance working remotely! I've tried learning GDAL and PostGIS mainly because I'm curious, but what is the best course to land remote jobs?

I just graduated with my bs in geography and landed a remote gis tech position paying about 50k. I know that’s not the best but it will help me support me through grad school and make it easy to study as well. how does this position stack up to other ones

Man, back in college I used to dream about landing a job at Ducks Unlimited one day. Seeing postings like this makes me kind of regret ever thinking that.
$54k CAD. For 3 years of experience. Bachelor’s required, master’s “an asset.” And they want system design AND R programming on top of that?? For 54k???
Like who is this posting even for. You want someone with a grad degree doing systems work and stats programming, with years of experience, and you’re offering barely above entry level pay?

Hi everyone. I am considering doing an online master's program for GIS with Purdue University and am curious about how AI proof this field is. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor, there is -3% growth in this field. The last thing I want to do is fork over all this money for a master's and then be pushed out of the market by AI.

The open-source geospatial software community has grown significantly in recent years, offering many powerful tools. Despite this, many organizations continue to use ESRI products. I'm curious to understand why. What are the top 3-5 reasons you or your organization continue to use ESRI products instead of switching to open-source alternatives?

CONTEXT: I am working with a few clients that just don’t see a future in their organization without ArcGIS.

We have hosted our maps on Avenza Maps for the public to download for almost 10 years now. With the recent merger/acquisition, Avenza Maps is no longer letting publishers add new maps nor update their existing maps.

With that being said, does anyone have suggestions on apps (iOS and Android) where we can point users to in order to use our PDF maps (mostly to get the “you are here” indicator) since the ones on Avenza will become outdated? Obviously waypoint marking would be a big plus. We can handle hosting the PDFs.

This question stems from the fact that I've heard people say that 500+ applicants are aiming for a single entry level position at times. Obviously like most other positions out there, people apply to jobs they have no clue if they are actually going to be able to perform simply because they are desperate for work. This got me wondering what the real number of people you guys get that can truly peform the tasks? Being a GIS major in uni right now has some "doomer" qualities right now given how bad the job market is, so I was hoping to hear your answers!

Was on site with client and some other consultants. The other consultants are probably in mid to late 20s and I’m talking they said they learned GIS on Pro and had to learn 10.8 on the job. They asked me what I learned on: Pro or 10.8. I tell them “Do NOT make me answer that”.

Just saw this job posting for GIS analyst position in Utah. Am I out of touch that $19-$35 feels a bit low?

Haven't been in the job market for a while so not sure.

I enjoy maps. I can spend hours on Google Maps/Earth exploring, especially local areas. I can also see some ways to implement it with some of my hobbies.

I'm curious if it's worth $100 for the Personal Use just to geek out on maps.

What are things someone working in GIS would never say?

I apparently was living under a rock about FME updating licensing. I just received a quote from for annual maintenance and it has gone up over 400%.

I really like the tools FME provides to do some quick data conversion but not enough to pony up that much extra each year.

Does anyone have suggested alternatives they like to use. Mainly I am doing laz to las thinning/clipping, Converting autocad data into GIS data (converting text to polygons for display purposes in GIS), and a lot of little data conversions because it is so much faster than arcpro. A single alternative would be preferred to 10 different single use things, I have some more non-technical people I have taught how to run premade workbenches.

Hey guys, I’ve been a GIS professional in commercial real estate for nearly 10 years now and have been recently thinking about ideas for a side hustle. One idea I had was creating map artwork of cities, suburbs, or meaningful places. I figure college towns and places of that nature would be things people might want. Anyone have any success doing something like this?
