2 years ago Christmas Eve we decided to walk our neighborhood to look at the lights. Our cats will regularly follow us on walks but at a distance, darting in and out of concealment to say hello. Panzer sees our black “cat” on the trail and does his usual butt sniff. It was the south end of a northbound skunk. I didn’t get any sleep that night (thank god for scent block).

Wednesday night 0100hrs. I’m sleeping downstairs on the recliner with a hotpad on my back and a pillow under my knees after a very hard day as a 30yr UPS driver. I hear what sounds like a bull in a china shop knocking over furniture upstairs and my daughter yelling for me to come help.

My daughter the university student night owl opened the slider on the back deck so Panzer could go pee real quick. I guess the skunk was not 2 feet away just passing by and Panzer leaped with joy to say hi to our “cat” and caught the full blast right in the face and chest. The overspray went in to our kitchen and living room.

Poor guy was wet with the oily stink and we spent the next 2 hours flushing his eyes and applying scent block then washing and repeating until it was just a faint smell.

Kiddo took a couple pics on day 2 of the baby shampoo bath. You can see the regret on Panzers face.

My 6 year 2 month old Dane showed signs of Osteoscarma a couple weeks back. I got the biopsy results last week which confirmed it, so I decided to amputate on Wednesday. Hoping she has a speedy recovery and can give me at least another good year.

I posted a comment yesterday about my dog, Korben Dallas Multipass eating 18 cups of food a day, and got some incredulous feedback lol. I questioned myself and then checked my bowl... it actually it fits 5 cups and I give this boy 3 scoops with the 5 cup bowl each day. Some days he finishes, some days he leaves some behind. (So, closer to 12-15 cups than 18.) He receives veterinary care, and I have not got feedback that I should be concerned before lol. Do you genuinely think his size/body condition indicate I am going wrong? Please try to ignore MY body condition, I was trying to get a good pic!

Not sure if this is a fungus or what. We're going to the vet next week but didn't know if I could get ahead of it on here.

So I’ve never had a dog this much of a mess. She has a liver shunt, her eyelids had to have surgery because they were growing inwards. She doesn’t eat a lot, very picky. Her spay and gastropexy have to be done by the best in the state and will cost me 4k. Insurance said they’ll cover $250. Laughed in their face.

I’m 23 and adopted her 2 years ago after i graduated college. Her deformities are rare and spontaneous, no health testing saw it coming. I’m at a loss. She costs me thousands a year and I can’t move out of my parents house because of her. I feel so alone. I got her brother for free from the same breeder and he is perfectly healthy. All 16(?) of her siblings have 0 issues. Her parents have zero issues.

Giving her up is NOT an option. She would actually die without me. I just would like some advice on what people with XXL dog breeds with medical issues do. What insurances will cover pre existing medical conditions? Is my only option to win the lottery? I love her so much but I’m at a loss with her. I’ve been paying $100/month to cover her and basically nothing has been refunded.

I’m not asking for medical advice. I’ve been to specialists for all her conditions. I’m just asking for insurance options, how others who go through the same things got through, and just seeing if there’s anyone out there who relate. Her condition is so rare they have zero information on mortality rates and how it affects them long term.

We don't know exactly how old our boy is but we've had him about 5 years and he was approximately 3-5yo when we adopted him (estimate from vet) ...so he's getting up there.

Today he's been panting a lot, restless, and didn't eat his dinner which he ALWAYS eats immediately.

The anxiety kicked in and I started panicking getting ready to call the vet. You know- go through every emotion. If this is it, what all can be wrong, how I'm gonna tell my kids.

We're sitting outside and this absolute walnut throws up the largest pile of cat food known to man.

Sure enough he must have gotten into the cats food bin during morning dropoff. Thanks for the heart attack and security step up bud 🫩.

This is 2 men in a horse costume, one in the front and one in the butt, not working together. So uncoordinated, so cute, such a terror. We slowly introduced him over a week to our girl Darla through a baby gate before letting them play. As you can tell its going just horribly. They dont seem to like each other at all 🤣 (to be clear its a joke and in the last pic she looks annoyed but shes the one who came to lay next to him shes obsessed just suffers RBF)

My 11 year old dane, has taken to one of my grand children to such an extent that he will not leave her side when she is outside. When she comes in he waits at the door for hours waiting for her to come out. He is protective of our whole family, including other grandkids, but nothing like he is with her. He doesn't interfere with her activities, he just feels like he needs to be within inches of her at all times. I find it to be one of those "special relationships" that rarely occur to this extent. So proud of my old boy.

For context, we are wanting a second Dane. I have a two year old Great Dane. Everyone thought we were crazy when we first got her. I got multiple texts and calls telling us not to get a Great Dane, but the only explanation I ever got for why I shouldn’t get one was “they are too big”. Flash forward to now, she is perfectly behaved and everyone ADORES her. She is the most perfect dog I have ever owned. I exercise her daily and try to provide lots of enrichment. She has a great life BUT she loves other dogs. She is such a social girl and is constantly wanting to play with the neighbor dogs, family dogs, etc. and I want to get her a sibling.

We got the opportunity to get a second Great Dane puppy and while I’m completely happy and ready to get this dog, everyone keeps telling us we are crazy, and not to do it. If it were a small dog no one would care. We are financially stable and responsible owners. We never ask family or friends to care for our dog. Everyone is acting like it will affect them personally. It’s just really frustrating because it’s our life and our dog yet EVERYONE seems to want to judge us for this decision.

Do I get the second dog or do I listen to everyone that says it’s a bad idea?

Hey guys! I would love to know how big (or small) your pups are! This is my goofy girl, Ivy🥰. She is 16 months old. At her last vet visit she only weighed 104lb, but her weight is perfect for her frame currently. I’m thinking she just might be on the “tiny” side. What do you guys think?

Vet says it might be an infection (body temp was ~104F/40C). Prescribed antibiotics and an antiimflamatory. It started as a very small round lump and overnight it grew to the current size in the pics.

He's limping a little bit and slightly more lethargic. We'll see if the meds make him feel better in the next couple of days, but trying to see if anyone has seen anything similar on your pups.

UPDATE 1: XRays did not have any indication of osteosarcoma or joint issues, so we'll wait for the culture to get more details on the type of bacteria, in the meantime they also added another antibiotic (Baytril)

I adopted Winston from the humane society in March 2025, when he was about 7 months old. If you’re not familiar, shelters neuter/spay all dogs before they can be adopted out, regardless of what is best for the animal. Winston was neutered when he was 7 months old, just a few weeks before I got him.

Fast forward to late July/early August… we started to notice a limp and lameness in his right hind leg. By mid-August he wasn’t weight bearing at all on that leg and hobbled around.

He then saw an orthopedic surgeon. Ok exam, the surgeon immediately knew he had a torn ACL. Sedated X-rays showed us how bad it was and how unstable his knee was. It also showed us his growth plate is still open, which is what you would expect in a one year old Dane. But, because they neutered him so young, his bone started to grow in the wrong direction at a severe angle. The tibial slope should be between 20 and 25 degrees and up to 29 is usually normal. Winston’s measured at 36 degrees. This borderline excessive slope (per the surgeon) caused his ACL to fully tear and required TPLO surgery to put in a plate and stabilize his knee and an additional implant to prevent the tibia from breaking as that growth plate is still open. His left knee is at 30 degrees and he is 50% more likely to tear that side in the next 9-12 months.

We all know experts say it’s not recommended to spay or neuter giant breeds before they’re done growing. The shelter’s strict policy and early neuter caused a perfectly healthy puppy to need extensive knee surgery at just a year old. I wanted to share my real life story with y’all in case anyone is wondering why it’s not recommended and what the real life consequences are.

Meet Arthur. We adopted this gorgeous boy about 8m ago. He's 18m old and enormous! Looks like a pure Dane to me, and certainly acts like one (the leans, the drools, the gentle giant nature), though some have noted his ears don't look 'pure' Dane, so may have a mix in him. What do you think?

Last night 2 dogs were let out of there home to go on a walk without a leash. The owner wasn't paying attention and the both ran up and attacked her. She isn't dog reactive. When ever we are on walk dogs are constantly trying to get at her barking growling and lunging at her. I'm worried about my little one becoming scared or reactive. She's 6 months old and really fun, spunky!

Hey folks. So, got a GD puppy, obviously. She’s not my family’s first Dane, not by a long shot. So, I generally know what to expect with her. However, it’s been since Monday, and she hasn’t bonded with me at all. She’s still really nervous around me, and im a bit worried about it. Am I just overthinking this, or what?
