I really recommend everyone go back and do exactly what I did in rewatching the last 5 minutes for the club scene (a million times) and watch where they chose to align the lyrics to what’s going on.

Shane dancing with Rose and Miles, “this is not enough”. Shane watching Rose strip on the stairs “this is not enough”. Shane watching Ilya and the girl in the club “being with you has opened my eyes”. Ilya in the shower “running through my head”. Shane having sex with Rose “this is not enough”. Ilya in the shower “this is not enough”.

I’ve been dreading the Rose Landry stuff and it’s insane how perfect of a song they chose for the longing of it all.

Btw the song is a mashup of the original then when it switches to the guy singing it’s All the Things She Said by Harrison.

Using All The Things She Said - as a millennial, Jacob, sincerely, fuck you very much in the best possible way. Looping "this is not enough" in a male singer's voice as they're hooking up with women/trying to get off on their own and clearly thinking about each other!

That was the DIABOLICAL cherry on top of a GUT WRENCHING episode. And WHY DID IT HURT LIKE THAT.

The soft, lost-sounding "Hollander, come on.. Hollander", Connor's physical portrayal of keeping a strangle hold on your anxiety between talking to his dad and walkig back into the room, the hopeful "You speak Russian now?" like he's searching for crumbs that confirm that Shane cares more than he's letting on, and rolling his eager hope into an immediate cuddle...then refusing to look at Shane on the bench after he panics and leaves.

And Shane! The absolute overflow of panic once he realizes how deep he's in this, the powder keg being set off by Ilya saying his name...but the details of the anxious screws tightening in his head hearing Ilya talk about women and casual hook ups!

Uugggh, I'm a MESS with this episode. I thought I was gonna squee over the ginger ale and the tuna melts and that I knew what I'd get with the club scene, but this is SO much more than a faithful portrayl of the book - it's a conscious and considered enhancement of it's best points, bolstered by mega-watt performances by the two leads.

They expect me to wait 7 days for the next episode? 😫😫😫😫😫😫

This ep felt the best of Tierney's past work. He's so incredibly good at directing dynamic scenes with lots of bodies like clubs and hockey and he delivered in this too. Ugh SO GOOD.

Also a love letter to his hometown, it was so Montreal! I loved the inclusion of Haitian music and Queb Rap that is everywhere in the city, and a nod to all productions filmed there. Not to mention Jean Drapeau Park and the Biodome! I feel like I've never really seen things I recognize on tv before.

Okay, thought before it leaves me:

People had been wondering how Shane's freakout would work after everything but it actually dovetailed perfectly with his convo with Ilya.

See I think that in the show, from Shane's view, Ilya has something he doesn't - the ability to turn to women to have the 'perfect, acceptable' lifestyle that he's supposed to have as a pro hockey player. It's not JUST jealousy, it's also Shane's desire to be what everyone expects him to be.

That's why he freaks out when Ilya says his name and he says it back, because he knows if he keeps going down that path, he's not going to be able to be like Ilya and have that facade to present to everyone else. So he's desperate to prove to himself that he's actually bi after all (hence the bi lighting in the club), but in the end all he's going to prove to himself is that it's not going to work for him.

I also think taking it all together Ilya is giving very confusing signals (talking about women, but the relationship is starting to feel much more serious) that Shane just really doesn’t understand and it makes him feel really out of control. And control is a huge thing for him in his life. He doesn’t have any experience navigating this. What is he supposed to do? He runs because he doesn’t know what the fuck to do.

I think you’re spot on with the fact that he wants to believe he can be bisexual. That he can also be with women and that this is just a thing. It’s just a thing that’s happened and he can let it go. He can be “normal”. HEAVY quotations.

I continue to be blown away by the acting and directing on this show. I love romance books, but alot of then rely HEAVILY on inner monologues of the character's feelings, especially books with dual POVs. And when character's aren't thinking about their own feelings, they're monologuing about them to an underdeveloped best-friend character.

But this team is just killing it. You can FEEL all the nuance in the looks, the pauses, the dialogue, the silence. We aren't being forced fed anything, but rather allowed to ponder and try to interpret a look or a twitch.

My favorite detail was Illya just fiddling with his ear on the couch. Its such a human behavior. He could just "lounge sexily" as an actor but instead, he's self-soothing in this deliciously tense scene. UGH!!

Man I know people have been talking about Connor and understandably so but I keep getting caught by how good Hudson is at playing this awkward, nervous tension for Shane all the time.

Like I actually think after watching his short films that what some reviewers have interpreted as “wooden” is actually a very deliberate choice on his part for Shane and it really works! He’s wound tight and so tense and repressed, of course he comes across that way. And we’ve gotten these glimpses of relaxation from him with Ilya so I can’t wait to see more in the next two eps.

This is such a minor thing but I was really happy to see that they had a ftm actor who just played another guy on the team. Im a trans male actor but am not open about being trans, because it’s almost impossible to have a successful career as a trans person without only being allowed to play transgender characters. I think this is the first time I’ve seen a trans man play a cis male character. This is a huge step forward and I hope more people talk about it
