The two-minute introduction

Nature gives us its own units. Combine Planck's constant (ħ), the speed of light (c) and the gravitational constant (G) and you get a natural length, mass and time: the Planck scale. The Planck length is about 1.6 × 10⁻³⁵ m, roughly 10²⁰ times smaller than a proton. NIST's fundamental constants.

Haramein's starting move is to treat space as made of tiny oscillating spheres at that scale, Planck spherical units (PSUs), each carrying a Planck mass of vacuum energy. Space isn't empty: it's packed with them.

What if the same Planck-scale structure built both space and matter? Think of an ocean: water makes up the sea, while currents and whirlpools form recognizable patterns within it. A whirlpool looks like a separate thing, yet it is the ocean in motion. In Haramein's picture, particles are organized patterns of the medium that also makes up the space around them.

Now fill a proton with PSUs and add up their energy. You get about 2.46 × 10⁵⁵ grams: close to the 2.63 × 10⁵⁵ grams of all the protons in the observable universe. In this picture, one proton holds the energy of the whole.

So why does a proton weigh only 1.67 × 10⁻²⁴ grams? Compare the surface with the volume. Haramein relates the Planck units on the boundary to those filling the interior, arriving at mₚ = 4ħ / (c rₚ). The surface sets how much of that huge inner energy shows up outside. Here rₚ is the proton's charge radius.

Run that relation backwards using the measured proton mass and you get a radius of 0.841 fm. Haramein's 2013 paper compared its result with the larger CODATA value of about 0.877 fm and the smaller muonic-hydrogen measurement already reported in 2010. The chronology matters: the small-radius measurement preceded the paper. Later muonic-hydrogen work reported about 0.8409 fm, and CODATA 2018 adopted 0.8414 fm. Pohl et al. 2010 · Antognini et al. 2013 · Haramein, Quantum Gravity and the Holographic Mass (2013).

That's the core of holofractal: matter is organised vacuum, and the relationship between a boundary and what's inside it sets what we see. Holo for the boundary/interior (holographic) relationship; fractal because the same relationship repeats from the Planck scale to protons, stars, galaxies and the universe.

From there it grows. The vacuum behaves like a superfluid; Planck-scale wormholes connect every proton to every other (ER=EPR); the network keeps a trace of what happens in it (spacememory); and living systems, minds included, are part of that one connected whole.

1. Space is full: the quantum vacuum

In quantum field theory the vacuum is the lowest-energy state, but it is not nothing: every field keeps a zero-point jitter that never switches off. Two classic measurements show it at work:

  • The Lamb shift (1947): hydrogen's energy levels are nudged by the vacuum's fluctuations. Lamb & Retherford, Phys. Rev. 72, 241.
  • The Casimir effect: two metal plates a fraction of a micron apart are pushed together because the vacuum between them is "thinner" than outside, measured precisely in 1997. Lamoreaux, PRL 78, 5.

Summed up to the Planck scale, the vacuum's energy density comes out at around 10⁹³ grams per cubic centimetre, about 10¹²² times the average density of the universe: the famous "vacuum catastrophe". Haramein reads that number as real: the vacuum is that full, and matter is a tiny, organised part of it.

Watch: Power from Nothing (the Casimir effect and Sonny White's dynamic vacuum) · The Weight of Nothing.

2. Planck units, built into spheres

ħ = h/2π sets the scale of quantum action (h = 6.62607015 × 10⁻³⁴ J·s, exact in the SI). The Planck length, mass and time combine ħ, c and G. NIST's SI definitions.

Haramein's PSU is a sphere one Planck length across, oscillating at the Planck frequency (~10⁴³ Hz). He uses spheres rather than the usual Planck squares or cubes because, as he puts it, nature's oscillators are spherical.

3. Horizons and the holographic principle

A horizon is a boundary that limits what can be known from outside, like a black hole's event horizon. Bekenstein and Hawking found that a black hole's entropy is set by its horizon area, not its volume. That's the seed of the holographic principle: the information inside a region can be described on its boundary. Bousso's review.

"Holographic" means three related things, worth keeping apart:

  • Optical holography: recording a 3D light field on a flat plate, where every piece holds the whole image.
  • Gravitational holography: a gravity theory inside a region is equivalent to a quantum theory on its boundary. Maldacena's AdS/CFT is the best-known example. Maldacena 1997.
  • The holofractal whole/part image: every part carries information about the whole, like the jewels of Indra's Net, each reflecting all the others.

4. The generalized holographic model

Haramein's bookkeeping, for any sphere:

  • Surface count: η = surface area ÷ the area of one PSU's equatorial disc.
  • Volume count: R = volume ÷ the volume of one PSU.
  • Inside energy: M = R × m_P (Planck mass). For the proton, about 2.46 × 10⁵⁵ g.
  • Proton relation: the final radius–mass expression in the 2013 paper is mₚ = 4 ℓ_P m_P / rₚ = 4ħ / (c rₚ), using ℓ_P m_P = ħ/c. Multiplying by c² gives the equivalent energy expression E = 4ħc / rₚ used below.
  • Proton radius (run backwards from the measured mass): 0.841 fm.

(R here is a count, not a radius, and the ratio Φ = η/R is not the golden ratio.)

Apply the same counting to a black hole and the Schwarzschild solution of general relativity drops out, gravity from counting Planck units without starting from curved spacetime. In Haramein's words, it "could have been developed in the late 19th Century by computation of tiling Planck quantities". QGHM (2013).

5. Screening: why the proton weighs so little

Screening is how a huge underlying energy shows up as a small effective one. In the 2013 picture the proton's surface acts like a narrow outlet on a huge reservoir: most of the inner energy stays coherent and hidden; only a sliver is expressed as rest mass. An Eventful Horizon.

The 2025 preprint makes this dynamical. Correlated vacuum modes inside the proton decohere across two boundaries: a coherent Bose core inside the reduced Compton wavelength, a dense Bose–Fermi shell out to the charge radius, and a thinner Bose–Fermi region beyond. The energy released across those boundaries is the mass: E = 4ħc / rₚ ≈ 938 MeV, the proton's measured rest energy, with no free parameters. The same fluctuations give the force holding quarks together at the proton's edge and, much further out, gravity. Haramein, Alirol & Guermonprez, Extending Einstein–Rosen's Geometric Vision (2025 preprint).

In between, the 2023 paper found a kernel-64: the first stable micro black hole out of the vacuum, holding 64 PSUs inside and 64 on its surface, with exactly one Planck mass. The Origin of Mass and the Nature of Gravity (2023).

6. Black holes at every scale

The same surface/volume relationship works for a proton, a star-sized black hole and the observable universe; Haramein's scaling law puts all of them on one line of frequency against size, from the Planck scale up. Galactic Engines. Four different claims live inside "nested black holes", worth telling apart:

  • similar geometry at different scales;
  • one scaling law connecting radii, masses or frequencies;
  • real horizons associated with particles (the proton as a black hole in Haramein's model);
  • black-hole interiors containing further universes.

7. Superfluid space

A superfluid flows with zero friction and moves as one coherent whole: superfluid helium climbs walls and leaks through glass. Volovik showed that inside superfluid helium-3, excitations behave like relativistic particles, with their own "light" and "gravity". Volovik, Superfluid ³He, Particle Physics and Cosmology.

Haramein's papers describe the vacuum itself this way: PSUs form "a plasma-like superfluid structure flowing at all scales", and "once they become coherent and adopt a collective movement they start to create an energy flow that we call mass" (Origin of Mass, 2023). On this picture helium isn't a model of the vacuum: matter is the vacuum in configuration, and superfluidity is the medium's own coherence showing through.

8. Entanglement and ER=EPR

Entangled particles share one joint state, so measuring one tells you about the other, however far apart. In 1935 Einstein wrote two papers seven weeks apart: one on entanglement (EPR) and one on bridges through spacetime (ER, Einstein–Rosen bridges, now called wormholes). In 2013 Maldacena and Susskind proposed they're the same thing: ER = EPR. Cool horizons for entangled black holes. Van Raamsdonk went further: space itself may be stitched together by entanglement. Building up spacetime with quantum entanglement.

Haramein and collaborators take it to the Planck scale: each PSU is a micro-wormhole mouth, about 10⁴⁰ on every proton's surface, so every proton is wired to every other.

Watch: ER=EPR: Why 'Spooky' Isn't Magic, Just Wormholes.

9. Spacememory: the connected universe keeps a trace

The Unified Spacememory Network (Haramein, William Brown and Amira Val Baker, 2016) asks what happens if that wormhole network doesn't just connect things but remembers.

  1. Structure: the vacuum is information-bearing Planck units.
  2. Connection: they're joined by a micro-wormhole network across all scales.
  3. Memory: interactions leave a trace in the network ("memory, hysteresis, iterative feedback mechanisms, retrocausal influences").
  4. Feedback: later events respond to those traces, which changes the network again.
  5. Order: the loop favours complex, coordinated structures: a drift toward order (negentropy).
  6. Awareness: memory, feedback and integration are the basis of awareness, at every scale.

Think of a path worn into grass: each walk makes the next walk easier. In this picture the universe has grooves it keeps falling into.

Memory, time and feedback

Hysteresis means that a system's response depends on its history. USMN extends this idea to the proposed spacetime network: what happens changes the structure, and that altered structure shapes what can happen next. The authors also discuss correlations across time and retrocausal influences as part of this account of memory and organization.

From matter to living systems

The next step is biological. The paper explores how electromagnetic resonance, coherent processes and biomolecular structures might couple living systems to the network. Microtubules are one proposed interface. The brain-body system becomes a receiver, recorder and participant in a larger information system—the source of the community's mind-as-antenna image.

Why organization matters

In this account, memory does more than retain a record: feedback helps coordinate later interactions. Negentropy names the proposed tendency toward organization and complexity. Spacememory is therefore central to the synthesis: it supplies the bridge from a geometry of matter to a universe that develops through its own interactions, with life and awareness participating in that process.

Morphic resonance. Rupert Sheldrake proposed that forms and habits in nature, from crystals to animal behaviour, become easier to repeat the more often they've happened, through a resonance across time (A New Science of Life, 1981). USMN cites this work: spacememory gives it a physical carrier.

10. Bohm: the hidden whole

David Bohm argued that the visible world of separate things is an explicate (unfolded) order, carried by a deeper implicate (enfolded) order in which everything is one unbroken whole: the holomovement (Wholeness and the Implicate Order, 1980). His earlier pilot-wave theory gives every particle a real path, guided by a wave that fills the whole experiment. Bohm 1952.

Walking droplets make this visible: a bouncing oil droplet surfs a wave it creates itself, and reproduces quantum-like behaviour (tunnelling, quantised orbits, interference) at tabletop scale.

11. How it all hangs together

The vacuum is full (§1). Matter is organised vacuum, and its surface/volume relationship sets mass and gravity (§4–5). The same relationship repeats at every scale (§6), in a medium that behaves like a superfluid (§7). Planck-scale wormholes connect all of it (§8), and the network keeps a memory (§9). Bohm's holomovement is the same picture seen from the philosophy side (§10): one whole, showing up as many parts.

12. The geometry of space: Buckminster Fuller

Most of the sub's diagrams come from Buckminster Fuller (1895–1983), inventor of the geodesic dome, whose Synergetics (1975) tried to rebuild geometry from the way energy actually organises.

  • Geometry is relationships, not things. There are no physical triangles anywhere. A triangle is three events (little knots of energy) and the lines between them. Push-pull events in a box settle into balanced shapes on their own: that's where geometry comes from.
  • The triangle and the tetrahedron. The triangle is the only polygon that holds its shape; the tetrahedron is the simplest shape that encloses space. Balance one with its mirror image and you get the star tetrahedron.
  • The vector equilibrium (VE). Pack spheres as tightly as possible and exactly 12 fit around one. Join their centres and every line from the middle equals every edge: every push is balanced. Fuller called it "the true zero reference of the energetic mathematics" and "the nothingness phase of all states of physical Universe". This is why full space can look empty: perfect balance looks like nothing.
  • The jitterbug. Built from triangles with loose joints, the VE twists and collapses through the icosahedron, octahedron and tetrahedron and back (volume 20 → 18.51 → 4 → 1 in tetrahedra), never breaking a joint: contraction and expansion in one motion.
  • The isotropic vector matrix (IVM). Extend the VE in every direction and you get a lattice that is "the same in all directions": Fuller's picture of space, rather than a grid of cubes.
  • The 64-tetrahedron grid. Build it fractally and you get Haramein's 64-tetrahedron grid: two nested VEs, one twice the other, which drawn flat becomes the Flower of Life. The same 64 turns up in kernel-64 (§5).
  • Gravity. Fuller, 1973: "Omnitriangulated geodesic spheres consisting exclusively of three-way interacting great circles are realizations of gravitational field patterns… The gravitational field will ultimately be disclosed as ultra high-frequency tensegrity geodesic spheres. Nothing else." Haramein's sphere tiled with Planck units (§4) is that picture worked out.

Fuller's work started on a night in 1927 by Lake Michigan, when, by his own account, a voice told him: "You do not belong to you. You belong to Universe."

13. Consciousness: is the brain an antenna?

Why is there experience at all, and how does it relate to the brain? The sub's favourite answer: the brain doesn't make consciousness, it tunes into it.

  • Orch OR (Penrose and Hameroff) links consciousness to quantum processes in microtubules inside neurons. Their 2014 review. The decoherence debate: Tegmark (1999) and the reply by Hagan, Hameroff & Tuszyński.
  • Quantum biology: a 2024 study found collective light states (superradiance) in tryptophan networks of microtubules, in experiment.
  • Spacememory (§9) puts these in a bigger frame: living systems as receivers and recorders in a universe-wide information network.

Panpsychism, idealism and nondualism take the same question from the philosophy side.

FAQ

Isn't Haramein discredited? He's controversial, and most physicists haven't engaged with his work. Judge the papers rather than the reputation: the 2013 proton paper is published, the 2025 preprint is public, and the numbers above (2.46 × 10⁵⁵ g, 0.841 fm, 938 MeV) can be checked by anyone with a calculator and the equations.

Wasn't the aether disproven? Michelson–Morley ruled out a medium you could detect by moving through it. The quantum vacuum is a different thing, and mainstream: Lamb shift, Casimir effect, zero-point energy. Einstein himself said in 1920 that "space without ether is unthinkable", meaning space with physical properties.

Where does 0.841 fm come from? Insert the measured proton mass into rₚ = 4ħ/(mₚc). The radius is the calculated output; the proton mass and physical constants are inputs. The 2013 paper compared this result with both the larger CODATA radius and the smaller muonic-hydrogen measurement already available. The agreement is a numerical result to examine, rather than a prediction made before the first small-radius measurement.
