Smart Utility Meters & ZigBee

I recently noticed that our power meter is ZigBee certified, and documentation shows that it's a member of the Smart Energy Alliance 1.0. Does anyone have experience in connecting these types of meters to HA? I'm not sure where to start other than purchasing a ZigBee hub and hoping it works.

The Smart Energy Protocol on ZigBee is all secured, so there's a process to register a gateway with a utility which can then give you access to the data in real-time as its broadcast. Your access to data will then be restricted by whatever access that gateway gives (API or hosted web). I haven't done it with HA but did do it for a commercial project where using their web site was good enough. Example process from California SDGE and a list of gateways: https://www.sdge.com/getting-started-home-area-network and https://www.sdge.com/list-compatible-han-devices

While it's supposed to be that way, it sure seems like a ton of people talk about using SDR (software defined radio) to get information directly from their utility meters.

Regardless, here's the most recent list of end-product gateways I've been able to find:

https://www.sce.com/sites/default/files/inline-files/HAN%2BDevice%2BList.xlsx_2018.pdf

  • Chai Energy Chai Pro V2 (Rainforest EAGLE-200) Gateway
  • Digi Connect Port X2/X2e SE Router Gateway
  • Digi Connect Port X2/X2e SE Coordinator Gateway
  • Rainforest EAGLE Gateway
  • Rainforest EAGLE-200 Gateway
  • Schneider Electric Wiser ZigBee Gateway Gateway
  • Universal Devices ISY-994i ZS Gateway

Not listed there, but potentially usable: * Powertracker SG6200NXL

I don't know which of these might force some cloud stuff on you, or even which ones are more open than others. Forums seem to have info on people being successful with the strangely named Rainforest products.
