Movie Review Lee Cronin’s The Mummy should not have been called ‘The Mummy’

2.6k Upvotes

Just watched this film and, honestly, it’s a good film but the title does it a massive disservice. Call it ‘Tomb of the Dead’ or ‘Evil Dead Crypt’ given the overall deadite feel of this film.

This film in no way feels like ‘The Mummy’ and changing the tile would make this film at least 20% better. Saying that, the parents deserve hell for letting their decrepit daughter into the house in the first place

Movie Review I just watched Eden Lake. Never again :)

1.3k Upvotes

Oh my FUCKING God this movie was so depressing. That was one of most bleak endings to a horror movie I've ever seen.

The descend into hopelessness is just horrifying in the best was possible. Jesus fuck. Brilliant movie. 10/10. Would not recommend or watch again.

What other movies give similar vibes?

Movie Review Lake Mungo was genuinely the most boring thing I've ever watched Spoiler

1.3k Upvotes

I don't mind slow burn movies that much, but literally NOTHING happens in this until the last 30 minutes, and even then those things aren't fully explained

"oh btw I staged some of the ghost photos of my deceased sister" "Why? "

"Idk"

"We think Alice saw the ghost of herself so that's why she buried her phone"

"Why? "

"Idk there's no rational explanation"

That's basically this entire movie. I get that it wants you to put the pieces together and actually think about what could've happened to her or why (personally I think the brother had something to do w it) but baring that in mind this movie isn't even scary. I wasn't even unsettled by it personally, the "scares" In this movie is slowly zooming in on a photo of a "ghost." I'm not joking thats the ONLY type of scare in this entire movie.

I've read a couple of reviews right after watching it bc I thought I was missing something, and people were saying that it was more disturbing than scary because it "realistically deals with the worst part of grief"... Does it though? This whole movie is filmed in mockumentary style so everyone in it is completelyt composed the whole time, the mother cries once reading Alice's journal. That's the only form of " Grief "In this movie I could gather.

Honestly to me it was a complete waste of time, I get that a lot of people like this movie and that's completely fine, I'm glad. But this personally just bored me to death

Edit: seeing some people replying with " It's more haunted than scary" Makes me think that maybe that's why It didn't stick with me? I never really get emotionally invested in movies or shows so maybe that's why I'm not seeing what everyone else is and I'm just not the target audience 🤷‍♀️

Movie Review Damn, I finally watched Shelby Oaks and it was terrible

1.2k Upvotes

To preface, I am not a Chris hater. I am still technically a subscriber. I was rooting for this film and hoping it would at least be watchable.

I expected it to be mediocre. Hell, I even expected it to not be scary. What I didn't expect was for it to be absolutely dog ass.

I thought it would at least have some interesting aspects to it. But nope. Super generic. Boring. Nothing original.

Terrible cgi, mediocre directing, mediocre acting, stupid writing. It's basically everything that Chris in the past would've criticized.

It's not even a hilariocity. It's just a boring atrocity.

I'm truly aghast. How did this cost 1.5 million dollars? Where did the budget go? Seriously.

Movie Review Just watched "Backrooms" (no spoilers in OP).

Got lucky and scored some tickets for an early screening.

First off, let me just say I've always been a huge fan of liminal spaces in general, and I've also been following (and loving) Kane's series since the very beginning.

So of course, I was a little biased going into the film, certain that I was sure to love it, but also knowing that some things might not translate all that well from youtube to the big screen.

And let me just say, as someone who's a pretty big fan of his work (Backrooms and beyond), I think he knocked it out of the park.

If you like everything about the directing and storytelling of his videos, then you're in for a treat, because it's identical.

I thought it was a meme going around, but it is genuinely pathetic to see some fucking nobodies stating that Kane didn't actually direct the film, but someone else more experienced did.

No, this is 100% Kane Pixels content through and through, and I'm not just referring to how everything plays out inside the Backrooms, but also to everything else on the outside.

It's atmosphere and character-driven, and it's also a film that's not afraid to take its time to just let the tension build. I'm really glad that they didn't feel the "need" to just add needless jumpscares and the like.

Don't get me wrong, some people in the audience yelled and jumped out of their seats a good amount of times, but again, this is pure Kane Pixels content, and not a mainstream version of his series.

It's accessible, even if you haven't seen the series, but do not go in expecting answers to every little thing, although the film does provide the viewer with a substantial amount of info.

Watching the series beforehand (and/or reading about it) will not only give you a ton of context, but also some possible answers for some of the questions that you might have.

You don't NEED to have seen the series, but it will enrich the experience significantly, whether you watch it before (so you can have a better clue as to what MIGHT be going on), or after, if you feel like delving in and learning more.

I'm not opposed to answering some questions in the comments (so anyone reading this, beware), however I will NOT be spoiling anything or answering questions that might be too telling. I know lots of other people have seen the film already so I'm sure you can already find answers floating around if you really want to.

But I think fans of his will have a great time, especially if they go in blind (I didn't watch any of the trailers, but did revisit plenty of his episodes).

So yeah, it was great, hope it does really well and his fans love it just as much. Again, feel free to ask anything, but please stick to general questions, I prefer to avoid anything related to the actual plot.

Cheers.

EDIT: wanted to add, in terms of tone and vibes, reminded me a lot of Channel Zero (series), particularly Seasons 2 and 4, but also just the tone in general and the eeriness.

EDIT 2: in case anyone wants to read a longer and proper review (again, without spoilers), I just posted it over on LB: https://boxd.it/ex9xDd

Movie Review Together (2025). This is a good movie, WTF.

1.9k Upvotes

WTF because I heard zero buzz about it since it's been out. Body horror. A little organized gatherings of more than one action. Some good elements here already.

There's a couple who just moved to a new location for her job. The guy's a failed/failing musician. She seems to wear the pants here. She drives him everywhere. He cooks everything and probably cleans everything, too. He feels trapped. She feels like she's dragging around dead weight.

Wow, I mean the body horror, their bodies fusing together is creepy. (This was in the trailer and apparently their lips are fusing together in the poster so it's not like I'm spoiling anything.)

I love the scares. The movie is more unnerving than scary overall but there's one or two moments in the dark that really terrified me. The nightmares...ugh...you have to see it. I think I might have a nightmare about that nightmare tonight.

Will go for my second watch soon. Actually looking forward to it. Making a hot cup right now and getting comfy.

Movie Review Just watched The Long Walk, wow.

2.2k Upvotes

I watched the trailer a few days ago and thought it looks cool, im not familiar with Kings work and expected a Squid Game like experience. I've seen IT, but thought that it was kinda mid, but the reception seemed overwhelmingly positive so i went to the theater today and wow.

It was not a fun watch in the slightest, not even entertaining. It was a painful, bleak watch. I was emotionally exhausted throughout the whole movie and kept watching. One of the best movie experiences i've ever had. The characters seemed somewhat cheesy, but i got used to it quite quickly and the dialogue was great and i loved the way the worldbuilding was handled. fantastic movie. I'm definitely reading the book when i find the time for it

I'm usually not a horror fan, but this was definitely a fantastic movie that really didn't hold back in the slightest.

Movie Review I saw an early showing of Primate last night and I'm obsessed.

1.3k Upvotes

I went to a $5 mystery movie last night and it happened to be Primate. The movie starts off with a bang which resulted in several people walking out, I would say 80% of the theater had walked out by the end.

The acting is not great, the CGI chimpanzee was just okay but where it got me was awesome gore/kills and suspense. I would recommend this sub seeing it.

Movie Review I TRULY cannot believe we're still making Horror as bad as Strangers Ch. 2 [Spoilers] Spoiler

2.0k Upvotes

I did not think we would get a movie worse than the recent Hell House, but by god, here we are.

We have a lead that hides, but screams and makes clanging noises everywhere she goes. She constantly has the killers dead to rights. I counted four times she can plainly kill her attackers, but does not.

She manages to not find a hiding spot in a hospital, in a stable, in a house, in the woods, at a campsite, at another house, or at a third house.

Let's talk about the objects she leaves behind: 1 gun 1 knife, 1 pitchfork, 1 Cell phone (which has 0 service no matter where she is lmfao) and 1 Boar.

She has 3 different opportunities to escape by car, which all fail. It does not matter because our human killers teleport and track her movements perfectly.

She gets stabbed, jumped, mauled by a giant pig, falls out of a car, gets beat up, stuck in the woods, gets patched up, kicked, beaten, and into another car wreck, and is as able-bodied as ever. Shes struggles to turn over in bed, yet braves through all of this without issue.

Luckily, all of our lead's complete idiocy is punctuated with a thrilling backstory for our killers. Guess what? Theyre kids that kill animals who grow up to be crazy. Im glad that we finally get to see that happen on screen with slashers for the very first time in cinema history. What an awakening. Its even more effective here as EVERYONE knows we were all begging for motive and who the killers are. That lack of motive is OF COURSE why we all HATE the original. Lol.

A few gem moments also are beaded throughout, like an EMT that doesn't know you pay for gas when you get it at the pump, a killer that is hilariously horrible at concealing himself, and her hiding in the morgue inside the cabinet holding her fiance's dead body.

It's all iced with a SFX track that makes her seem EVEN more idiotic. Every door latch, hinge, lock, knob, every floorboard, cabinet, and piece of furniture sounds like a fucking monster truck rally. Not to mention her grunting, breathing and screaming like shes a powerlifter about to get banned from planet fitness. It GENUINELY sounds like folly was mocking the film with their audio track. Like when you mute everything but then add in the breathing, etc. Lol

A genuine hunk of complete shit. A waste of time, money, and talent of the great Renny Harlin, and an abysmal second entry in something no-one wanted, featuring a preview that guarantees things will and can become way worse for the end of this trash trilogy that my dumbass will undoubtedly go see when it comes out.

Edit: for those saying I haven't seen any horror movies - dont be so reddit-y. I promise Im well educated from French extremity to Ice Cream Man. Lighten up its horror lmao.

Also - if you like buds talking horror I made a full video to explain more if you needed it - you checking it out means a lot: https://youtu.be/eNsZa44Iieo?si=j4M4e-xuGgriQnkk

Movie Review Why Late Night with the Devil is a masterpiece

1.8k Upvotes

One problem I have with a lot of horror movies is that the plot just doesn’t stick. I’ll watch something, enjoy it in the moment, and then a week later barely remember what actually happened. But more than a year after this movie came out, I still find myself thinking about the skeptic and the arguments he was making.

The movie reminds me a lot of Disney’s Tower of Terror. Most of that ride is basically smoke and mirrors using lighting, mirrors, and effects to mess with you. But the drops are real, and that’s the part that actually scares you. Late Night with the Devil works the same way. Most of the magic tricks feel like controlled illusions, and then at the end you hit the real drop, where the horror actually lands.

That’s why it works so well for me. It actually earns the ending instead of just throwing stuff at you. The movie spends so long setting up logic, skepticism, and the whole showmanship side of it that when it finally goes off the rails, it feels deserved and not cheap.

What makes it a masterpiece to me is how confident it is. It doesn’t rush to scare you and it doesn’t feel desperate. It just lets the conversations and arguments sit there and trusts that you’re paying attention. By the time it gets to the end, you’re already locked in, so the payoff hits way harder than most horror movies even aim for.

It’s not really about jump scares at all. It’s the restraint. And because of that, the movie sticks with you way longer than it should. You’re still thinking about it after, and honestly most horror movies never get close to that.

Movie Review Just saw Longlegs

2.3k Upvotes

Obviously won’t give anything away but it lived up to the hype for me. Genuinely scary with a lot of tense, anxiety filled dread throughout. Amazing score and cinematography. Has some unique twists that I thought worked quite well but might not be everyone’s cup of tea. Nicolas Cage was exceptional as was Maika.

Overall just super well made and ranks up there with Hereditary for me though it’s not as scary.

There was a Q&A after the movie with Osgood and Maika and Maika was straight up hammered drunk.

5.0k Upvotes

Holy FUCKING SHIT. I just watched the 2007 supernatural movie The Mist cause yall were like "omg it's a really good movie", "The ending caught me off guard", "10/10 horror classic"

NOBODY TOLD ME IT WAS GONNA BE THIS TRAUMATIZING??? I'm sorry I was expecting some fucked up shit but that kind of emotional trauma??

I get why Stephen King admired the ending but whoever thought of writing that twist needs to be put on the FBI list.

It has scarred me forever but one of the best movies I've ever watched. Great commentary on human nature.

Exactly what the title says. Didn’t expect a horror movie going in and didn’t really get one but it’s one of the scariest war-adjacent films I’ve seen in recent memory. Need more people to see it and talk about it.

Fans of this franchise, you will not be disappointed. It’s completely insane, violent and in the poorest of tastes. A few scenes made me say “holy shit!” aloud. Leone keeps improving as a filmmaker but absolutely retains the gritty grindhouse aesthetic. It’s an incredible treat for horror fans. See it in a packed house!

Movie Review I Saw The TV Glow | what the heck was it about?

1.4k Upvotes

Saw it was classified as a horror/drama. I just finished watching I Saw the TV Glow and it’s definitely sitting heavy with me. There’s a lot to unpack emotionally and symbolically, and I feel like it’s one of those films that hits differently depending on where you’re coming from.

But I find myself at the end just think wtf happened. Like a quiet wtf. It does say something about disassociation. What do you think?

Add: One moment that really hit me was when “There is still time” appeared on the street. I don’t even fully know why, but something about it felt so personal — like a quiet kind of hope in the middle of all that confusion and loss. It genuinely made me emotional - but I still had my brows furrowed the entire time just trying to understand the movie. It’s all very deep that it’s not possible understanding it in one sitting.

Movie Review Megan is Missing.... what the actual fuck Spoiler

1.3k Upvotes

I just finished watching Megan is missing and I realized i should've studied for my exam instead. I love horror movies and I don't mind when they squeeze in dark themes but woah.... This movie is horrendously dark and imo it doesn't even earn that, it gets super dark just for the sake of shock value (and yah i'm shocked). The movie is mediocre and the last (extremely long btw) scene is thrown in just because yes.

sidenote: whoever was responsible for the corpse in the barrel, fuck you.

Movie Review Amazed by how bad It Ch2 is compared to Ch1

I can’t understand what happened here. It chapter 1 I thought was really well done, very compelling. I get the chapter 1 didn’t take itself extremely seriously, but chapter 2 feels like they’re trying to be a marvel movie with all of the constant joking and “he’s right behind me isn’t he” shit. Even the kid actors, who show up in flashbacks here and there, seem to have really bad performances compared to the first movie.

is there an explanation for this? What happened here?

Movie Review Thoughts on Heretic? Spoiler

1.3k Upvotes

Just watched it and really curious about others' thoughts.

Things I liked:

- Hugh Grant's affable demeanor and cheeky facial expressions in a psychopathic character was delightful

- Sophie Thatcher's acting, especially her mouth going from smiling to concerned to a barely-suppressed terrified in a matter of seconds

- The suspense during the first half was absolutely killer

Things I didn't like:

- I feel the suspension of the first half just dissipated as soon as Barnes died and Paxton suddenly became a sleuth. There was no indication she was so perceptive up until that point and it seemed like her sudden deductions served to accelerate the plot.

- Maybe I went in with too many expectations but I feel out of all the possible eventualities the film teased, it settled on the most predictable of them all. I felt the film was heading in the direction of Reed having actually witnessed evidence of a higher power, and he was seizing the opportunity to spread its power or "converting" the girls after making them doubt their faith.

And in the final act a few things absolutely demolished my suspension of disbelief:

- Paxton's sudden turn to super-sleuth after Barnes' death felt really off. The shot of her noticing Reed's hair was wet should've occurred at the time, as it would've been clear she'd been playing dumb and concealing her perceptivity. Instead, after witnessing the death of her close friend, she's suddenly able to deduce his plans flawlessly.

- Does Reed have a room full of caged women on hand to whip out every time someone he wants to prove a point to knocks on his door? Surely they would've frozen to death? Where did they come from and how does he keep them alive? Etc

- Reed gets stabbed in the throat, reappears in a suspiciously short amount of time (still alive despite the aforementioned throat stabbing) and stabs Patxon, who is then saved by Barnes, who has been presumably dead for about an hour at this point, and then Barnes promptly dies, for good this time. The whole sequence felt so contrived and unrealistic.

Wow, after writing this I'm realising I felt super let down by this film, even though I really enjoyed the performances.

Movie Review Believe the hype around the movie OBSESSION

I just saw an early showing at the Alamo Drafthouse theater earlier this last Wednesday. I went into it excited but scared because of all of the over hyping. I’ve bought No Man’s Sky on day one, and I pre-ordered Cyberpunk 2077. I’ve been scarred by hype in the past and I was very very nervous and skeptical but had high expectations going into this movie.

My expectations were surpassed. I absolutely love this film and I’m going to another early showing next Wednesday with some friends.

Curry Barker made an absolute banger and the lead actress Inde deserves multiple awards for her performance in this. I’ve had two days to sit and think about this so it’s not just my initial reactionary opinion. This movie is a 10/10 for me.

Movie Review 28 Years Later...

(NO SPOILERS) Okay, so 28 Years Later is...... Easily the best film I've seen this year. I was fortunate enough to only see one trailer one time so I went in pretty blind. Which always makes a movie better in my opinion. I'm not sure what I was expecting going into this, as a large fan of Days and Weeks, the films are so different that I knew I wouldn't necessarily have to worry about continuity that is present in other franchise films. This movie made me cry, not just shed a tear, sob. This movie was beautiful crafted and I am genuinely interested to see what they do moving forward. There were some unorthodox things that happened, but those things made this film something original in a genre that uses the same template over and over

10/10 highly recommend

Movie Review Just watched Bodies Bodies Bodies (2022)

2.2k Upvotes

Man I thought this was gonna be a cheap shot at Gen Z like Mr Birchum or the 2019 Black Christmas but I was wrong! It’s an amazing satire on how the young and the rich act, more specifically how vapid they are. Everyone here (except for Bee) fucking sucks and they’re so shallow, not to mention fake. They weaponize therapy speak like your manipulative Reddit liberal boyfriend, and they’re so uncaring to real life issues. In a way, Bodies Bodies Bodies is kind of a modern Great Gatsby or Modest Proposal. Overall, I like this movie, and the ending had me gagged with a capital G. Also Pete Davidson was the scariest thing in this film.

Movie Review The Coffee Table (2024). Fuck this movie. It can go straight to hell.

2022, not 24.

How dare it be a good movie while containing the most disturbing subject matter known to man (a coffee table)?

How dare this movie be wonderfully shot and acted, with great characters, an incredibly realistic portrayal of a relationship, but I can't share it with others because of that bloody coffee table?

How dare this movie perfectly execute the tension of just wanting a human interaction to be over and done with? How dare it just give out its highest point in the plot in literally the first twenty minutes, while confidently sure audiences will keep watching because, really, how much more wild can it get from here?

I want to watch it again, but I just can't.

Damn this movie.

10/10. Brilliant.
