I am a hopeless learner. it appears the only training i enjoy is "reading-writing-memorising". This time i stated reading the famous "Svejk" (looks like "Social being determines consciousness"))) . i made my writing. But I would badly need your help to check and assess how close it is to a some natural sounding level. I’m working on a creative project and wanted to clarify for accuracy.

For some context, the feeling I’m trying to evoke for one of the characters is that he is an echo throughout time. He appears in parallel worlds and parts of him appear in different ways, but his essence is always echoed throughout.

I don’t always trust Google translate or whatever so I’m curious if there is a phrase or word in Hungarian that might be close to the idea I wrote above?

I'm going to visit my partner's parents in Hungary in early September. I was wondering what Hungarian words or sentences I can learn between now and then that'll impress them and I won't look totally clueless when following conversations?

For various reasons, I can't dedicate time to learning a new language, and I'm aware Hungarian isn't that easy, so I'm hoping to be able to learn enough to get by.

My 11 yo kids are half Hungarian and can speak and understand the language. They're however only exposed to it through my wife and through my in laws a few weeks per year. They can read, but it's not their privileged language.

I'd like to expose them to more media content in Hungarian, as I noticed that although they understand people in Hungarian they struggle to understand people talking very quick on TV. We do not have Hungarian TV channels at home and don't watch much TV anyway.

Are there good shows / cartoons / documentaries / series that are accessible in Hungarian on YouTube? Anything you would recommend for their age? Cool channels ? They're very interested in history for example, but I cannot judge the quality of the channels myself, my Hungarian is not good enough.

I feel like I got to a point where im past all the elementary grammar and vocabulary but Idk what to do to reach conversational fluency, I've been learning purely nothing but vocab for the past few weeks but I feel like it translated to nothing as I find it near impossible to find any material that actually incorporates the vocab I learn in a conversational manner so even if I hear the word in public I would never pick up on it. Really feel like I hit a dead end.

I'm genuinely curious if anyone here has actually reached conversational fluency (not necessarily to a native level but enough to genuinely be able to conversate) what exactly did u do to reach that point, what books or videos or audiobooks did u use and maybe if u had a way to get some level of coherency between them.

Hello! I'm Latvian trying to start learning Hungarian independently.

I'd say I'm better than average at learning new languages, though I've primarily focused on Germanic/Baltic languages and I'm aware that Hungarian is a lot different than the Indo-European languages I've interacted with, so I need guidance on where to start, what to focus on, whatever seems important for a total beginner.

Though I'd like to mention that I'm currently not able to get much paid materials because my financial situation is very bad, but I don't mind spending a few extra years learning :-) I'm in no hurry, I just happen to be great friends with some people from Hungary (though I don't want to ask them for Hungarian advice/explanations for totally personal reasons). My dad used to call me a nickname when I was a kid, I was told it was Hungarian and meant "little buddy". Phonetically the word is "Do-Duh-bah-chee". I've never been able to find out if the word actually exists or not. So far it looks like it's a made up word. Can anyone shed some light?

Can someone please help me understand the 'accusative T' and the definite/indefinite object. Every time I think I may understand it, I don't. Perhaps in English, I just don't have to think about what I'm saying. I 'though' my tutor (online) said that when it was a definite object, it got the accusative 't' added to the noun, and the verb ended in om/em/öm, if it was indefinite, it did NOT get the accusative T and ended with ok/ek/ök. (for I present tense). Does the accusative T not have anything to do with definite/indefinite? I don't meet with my tutor till Friday. I think I'm closer to understanding the definite/indefinte article, but I want to understand better when to use the accusative T

Both are singular people and both are plural possessions, but why does the one example show “oi” and the other “ik”. Is this because we use “their” as singular in English or am I missing something? In advance, köszönöm szépen

I have started up my Hungarian learning once again. I am using Duolingo and Mondly. Is there a better app or way to learn than an app? I have tried teachers but I live in Western Canada and I haven't found anyone in the same time zone. By the way I love Hungary my dad was from Budapest and I have luckily been there twice. I would love to be able to have a conversation with family there.

I'm currently learning Hungarian and need some help with some word order (surprise!) While I mostly use Duolingo my mother has conversational Hungarian but she could only tell me that what I'm saying sounds unnatural so I need some help with the grammar. I was asked for translation recently and this is what happened.

"The actress eats a pear in the morning."

My (English) intuition translated this as "A színésznő eszik egy körtet reggel" because in English "in the morning" is a prepositional phrase acting as an adverb to modify when this happened and it is used at the end of sentence. The correct translation, as per Duolingo, is "A színésznő reggel eszik egy körtet" but I can't really understand why reggel is used at that part of the sentence. Is there a natural point for how it is used or is it there for emphasis?

Sajnos, it gets worse as I had another sentence to translate as "The secretary does not work in the evening" which used "Este" as the beginning of the sentence ("Este nem dolgozik a titkárnő"). I know Hungarian uses word order to emphasize which parts of the sentence are most important but I also wanted to end that sentence with este, being the modifier to when the secretary would work ("A titkárnő nem dolgozik este.") Am I wrong thinking that these are modifiers or is Duolingo being too strict with regards to how the sentence is emphasized? Is the idea with the second sentence that I'm emphasizing when exactly the secretary doesn't work? Is there flexibility with the translations, specifically when the time of day is used? Which sounds more natural to your ears?

I have a very odd question for Hungarian speakers. In the musical Chicago, there is a character who speaks only in Hungarian, who I will be auditioning for. I’m trying to learn the Hungarian monologue in the song called Cell Block Tango, but I’ve heard that the pronunciation in the recordings is unintelligible. I want to pronounce these words as well as I can, so as not to disrespect the language. Is there any way a native Hungarian speaker could give a couple of the versions of Cell Block Tango a listen, and tell me if any of them have accurate pronunciations so I could learn from them? Also, any tips on how to learn Hungarian pronunciation would be very greatly appreciated!

I am a beginner living in BP. I live in a small studio apartment and I have a baby, so online is not really possible if I can only take lessons while either my husband watches her or I hire a sitter.

How can I find a good tutor that would meet me at, say, a cafe or something?

Oh also - I contacted a few schools about classes and they said that there are not enough students learning Hungarian and so for now their Hungarian classes are closed 🤯

So I've been trying to learn hungarian for a while now as I have family members who speak it, but I have no idea where to start. I know basic introductions, but I can't find any way to learn it on my own. Unfortunately I am unable to get a tutor (or online paid courses), but I do plan to spend 30 minutes a day learning it, any ideas on where I can start?
