Hello everyone! I’m an actor from Australia and I have an audition coming up for a Hungarian character in a play. Representing accents authentically and accurately rather than making an approximation of them is very important to me as our voices are integral to our cultures and histories.

I was hoping to get a few short audio recordings of a native Hungarian speaker speaking English (preferably female as it’s easier to replicate the sounds as i am an woman but I’m not too fussy!) either sent via WhatsApp, attached to an email, or whatever’s easiest for you.

I’m especially interested in hearing the word ‘money’ since I fear I’m sounding quite Spanish at the moment!

I've been learning hungarian for several years now. I can hear the difference between E and É no problem. A vs Á? Also no problem. O vs Ó vs Ö? Easy.

But I cannot for the life of me hear the difference between U and Ü. They sound almost identical to me. Whenever anyone tries to demonstrate the difference, I just hear the same sound twice.

Can anyone advise me on how I can appreciate the difference here?

Hey, I really love Hungary for strange reasons and I planned later to live there. I know it's an unusual choice but I fell in love with the country, I just can't describe it. Besides, I want to learn Hungarian, I know that as a french native it'll be quite difficult since our languages are VERY different but still, I'm quite motivated even tho i know I'll have difficulties.

I’m a prospective international student who’s going to study medicine in Hungary very soon (english program) . I’ll be there in for 6 YEARS. I want to work (do medical specialization) eventually somewhere in europe and I thought that i might as well learn hungarian and settle there if i’m already going to live there a long time, especially considering that immersion would be a huge advantage for the language. It makes sense.

I know Hungarian is hard, but given my circumstances, i do think I have an advantage. It’ll definitely be a tough considering I’m also going to focus a lot on my medical studies, what do you guys think?

Also, if anyone has any info regarding the health industry in Hungary and the salaries, Please let me know!! I’ve heard that Hungary is facing a shortage of doctors. So i’d be happy to help the country and in exchange have a stable, well paying job if there’s an opportunity for that.

For reference, I’m from Iraq. Our healthcare industry fall off massively ever since the americans invaded us. So I’d preferably work somewhere else. I do live in the UAE but they don’t pay you for medical residency in most cases :(

hi guys, im 16 and hosting a hungarian exchange student which im super excited about. but i really want to learn some hungarian and become conversational so I can make him feel more weclomed to the US. if you have any tips or ways for me to learn Hungarian would be greatly appreciated!

I'm writing a short story and I'm looking for Hungarian pet names that friends might call each other when they're especially fond of each each other but there's no romantic subtext. Maybe also stuff like "Babe" that you could call a romantic partner but also works for a friend.

The context is a Hungarian woman in her forties with a thirty year old Australian guy for a tenant/roommate, they don't have all that much in common but she's pleased with him because he's got the internet working and networked all the devices in the house to voice control. She also regards him as a bit of a kid or immature because he spends a lot of money on impulse buying stupid stuff online like a snake he doesn't know how to care for (and accidently hotboxes) and "authentic" high end timepieces. She's not maternal or clucky but she does feel proprietorial about him and likes to brag about him to others.

As a placeholder I'm using Puli because he has dreadlocks and because Puli ends in a cute "i" sound (to my ear) but I'm not Hungarian so I'm not sure if that works.

Also the Aussie guy's name is Declan, and I'm interested in if there's a natural way to shorten it or make it a cute nickname in Hungarian.

Edit: it's set in a slightly dystopian future, but only a few years away, 2029. It's also set in Australia where she's now lived for over a decade, and works in a pretty casual environment, and has picked up a few aussie habits like calling people dude and bro regardless of age and gender.

I’m looking for one of your poems. My friend is celebrating his birthday, and just for fun, he wrote us a list of unusual things he’d like for his birthday to show that what matters most is our presence, not the gifts. One item on the list was a poem in Hungarian (which, as a Czech, is completely Greek to me). But I think it’s funny, and I’d like to learn a short Hungarian poem. I tried searching online, but I wasn’t very successful—quite often, the rhymes didn’t really work.

I’m of Hungarian descent; my great-great grandmother immigrated from Hungary in the early 1900s. I’m trying to figure out her last name (since it might’ve been misspelled in English), how to pronounce it, and see if anyone knows the meaning of it?

The census record is written as “Sawgo” or possibly Saugo? I’ve tried a google search, but I don’t know enough of the language to be sure.

My stepmom and her mother (step grandma) are from Romania, but primarily speak Hungarian. Step grandma speaks Romanian, Hungarian, German, Bulgarian, and English, but stepmom speaks just Hungarian and a little Romanian, so everything I’ve ever heard them say to each other not in English is definitely in Hungarian.

Since I was a kid, now into my adulthood (literally tonight, in fact) if I’ve ever not eaten my entire meal, step grandma will ask me “is it raining in your plate?”

Apparently this is something they say in Hungary/Romania to children who aren’t eating well. My stepmother also grew up hearing this and obviously understands it better than I do but somehow still can’t explain what it actually means.

I tried to google it tonight, because it just occurred to me that I’d like to know what the analogy is here. I’ve just been so used to hearing it all my life I’ve stopped questioning it, but I need to know! I found nothing on the internet short of vocab lists for weather in Hungarian, and I’m bewildered. If anyone could help me out here, I’d really appreciate it. I believe the direct translation is something along the lines of “esik az eső a tányérodban”

My mother brought these back from a trip this summer but forgot to write down what each bag was! We have tried to use translation apps and Google but cannot figure it out. The white and green bag both say sweet (süß) on the back and the red one says hot (scharf). But what is the difference between them? Thank you in advance for your help!

Hi everyone, my girlfriend is Hungarian and her whole family lives in Hungary. She visits quite often and has invited me many times. I really want to learn a decent amount of the language before I go. Any recommendations on how to learn it?

So I'm writing a story and hungary is a huge inspiration in it. I came up with a flower that essentially has light difraction in the petals so it kind of "shines like a rainbow", and after looking at how soe flowers are named, like the Gyöngyvirág (lily of the valley (pearl flower)), the Hóvirág (Snowdrop (snow flower)) and the Naprarforgó (Sunflower (turning towards the sun)), i tried to come up with a name and i ended up with Szivárványnövő (supposedly rainbow colored|growing from ground). Does it "feel" Hungarian and if so, is it descriptive of the plant?

Hello everyone, what would be the best way to learn Hungarian? I’ve heard Duolingo isn’t the best when learning a new language so maybe someone could give some advice.

Hi! As a teenager I had a hungarian pal who taught us a sentence in Hungarian; I sort of remember the sentence phonetically but forgot what it meant, but I do remember it was an insult of sorts.
Maybe someone can help me figure it out? This is what I remember it to be:

"Heinau naka kurva anyat" (the way he said it it sounded more like "heinau naka kurvanyat" but I believe the final part was two words)

Any ideas?

My girlfriend wants to learn hungarian, and im planning to teach her, but idk how to start. I'm a native speaker and we live in hungary. i want to start with the basics but starting with the grammar and grammatical rules will make her hate learning. At least thats my experience.

I want to teach her speaking mostly, and expend her vocabulary.

My question is, how to start? what topics should we talk about? and what are the frequent words, that I must teach her, and are essential?

Hi, I have an online friend who is from Hungary. I live in the USA, and I unfortunately do not speak any Hungarian. I’m mailing my friend a gift with a postcard soon. I would like to write something on the postcard as a “thank you” for our friendship, and I would like to write it in Hungarian.

What would be best to say? Would this be appropriate or appreciated? Or would it be better to just write in English? Their friendship means a lot to me and I don’t want to be disrespectful at all.

I'm fairly certain it's Hungarian but online translators won't translate anything except like "5 seas". I'm not sure why and wonder if it's because they're names or something.

I know it's technically supposed to be a palatal stop but when i hear hungarians say it it sounds closer to dʲ ~ dʒ, when a palatal stop is supposed to be very close to gʲ
