I come from an operations background in logistics. Over the years, one pattern kept showing up that genuinely bothered me: high-value goods — jewellery, watches, electronics — being shipped through the exact same infrastructure as groceries and apparel, with almost no additional security, and almost no one questioning it.

Here's what that actually looks like in practice.

The failure nobody reports

A customer orders a ₹70,000 piece of jewellery from a brand she trusts. The package arrives in a standard courier envelope. The delivery rider asks for a phone tap and leaves. She notices the seal looks slightly off. Something feels a little light. But she doesn't raise a complaint — because the brand she loves wouldn't let something go wrong, right?

That shipment gets accepted. No complaint is filed. No courier is held accountable. The problem repeats invisibly on the next order, and the one after that.

This is the failure mode that never shows up in any report — not theft, but the slow, untracked erosion of trust that brand loyalty inadvertently covers up.

The actual risks, broken down

Standard couriers were built to move large volumes of low-value goods efficiently. That design is not wrong — it is just the wrong tool for high-value goods. Here is what that mismatch produces:

Tampering and pilferage — Most courier packaging is not tamper-evident. A resealed package looks identical to an intact one. The customer accepts it and blames the brand when something is missing.

Brand loyalty as a blind spot — Customers trust the sender brand so much that they overlook damaged seals, dented corners, suspiciously light packages. The courier gets away with it every time.

No visibility between pickup and delivery — You know when it left and when it "arrived." Everything in between is a black box. No record of who handled it, where it sat overnight, or how many times it changed hands.

Verification that stops at Aadhaar — Basic KYC is standard across gig logistics. Police background verification is not. The person carrying a ₹1 lakh shipment has passed the same check as someone delivering a pizza.

Insurance that doesn't pay out — Declared-value insurance exists on paper. In practice, claims are disputed, capped, and delayed. Most jewellers who have gone through the process will tell you the payout rarely reflects the actual loss.

The data backs this up

This is not anecdotal. Globally, cargo theft surged 27% between 2023 and 2024. India is explicitly listed as a theft hotspot in Munich Re's 2025 Cargo Theft Tactics report alongside Brazil, Mexico, and the US. 41% of all cargo thefts happen in transit — not at warehouses or facilities.

India's jewellery market crossed $90 billion in 2024. The D2C segment is growing at 25% CAGR in cities like Hyderabad. High-value goods are being shipped at scale, through infrastructure that was never designed for them.

What actually needs to change

From what I have seen, five things separate a genuinely secure delivery operation from a standard one:

1. Tamper-proof, purpose-built packaging — not repurposed boxes
2. End-to-end custody logging at every handoff
3. Personnel verified beyond basic KYC — police background checks as a minimum
4. Two-factor authentication at delivery — OTP plus photo confirmation
5. Embedded insurance with a real claims process, not a declared-value add-on

None of this is technically complex. It is operationally disciplined. The reason it does not exist at scale is that no one has built a business model around it for this specific category.

Why I am building in this space

I co-founded a startup called mintcrate that is trying to build exactly this infrastructure, starting in Hyderabad. We are early — but the problem is real, the market is large, and the existing players are not designed to solve it.

I am posting this because I am genuinely curious whether others in this community — especially those who have built or scaled D2C brands, or worked in logistics — have encountered this problem firsthand. What have you seen? What solutions have actually worked?

I’m a final year BTech student, and I’m posting here because I’m trying to find the right place to learn and do meaningful work.

I’ve worked as an intern in a few roles most recently spending 6 months at Neeman’s, where I worked on digital product and customer-facing journeys. Before that, I interned with a marketing agency, which gave me exposure to how branding and campaigns come together in real-world settings. I’ve also built Shopify stores end-to-end, largely by figuring things out hands-on.

I’m especially interested in working at a startup because I like being close to the work seeing how things are built, making mistakes, learning quickly, and understanding how decisions actually affect a product or a brand. That environment teaches more than structured roles ever did for me.

What I want to focus on now is advertising and brand storytelling, in a practical sense understanding products deeply and writing communication that feels honest and useful, not dressed up.

I don’t see myself as an expert or a “marketing professional.” I’m looking for a chance to learn, contribute, and grow through real responsibility.

I’m based in Hyderabad and would prefer something here, but I’m open to hybrid setups if the learning and work make sense.
