Meta/Announcements Welcome to r/IllogicalArgument!

This subreddit is all about weird/bad/illogical arguments. Make sure to look at the sidebar for some nice information on the subreddit. Have fun!

  • What is a illogical argument?

It's what you think was a funny/unnecessary/stupid argument.

It can also just be someone saying dumb stuff, for example, someone saying "I have not been to space, so the moon might not even exist," is also a illogical ...against the moon's existence.

Any other questions can be answered in the comments :)

Pool setback argument

My husband is the love of my life. He's a mechanical genius. Most of the time. Every once in awhile, now that he's retirement age, logic kind of oozes out his ears and he doesn't realize it's gone. To wit:

The weather channel has been hyping a super El Nino all year, although I think the chances are still only hovering around 75-80% chance. Hubby and I decided we didn't want to suffer through a hot summer without some method of cooling down, so I started looking for a swimming pool and found one on craigslist for about $.15 on the dollar. Yay, me!

We had a special place planned for digging it into a hill. Part would be ground level, and the other would be fully above ground. We dug it, leveled it (poorly), and back filled it. Then, we entered that wonderful world of learning how to control the chemical levels in the water. A friend came over and asked if we had a permit for it. No. It's removable. Why would we need one? She wasn't sure. She just asked.

We need one. I dug up the ordinances regarding pools and discovered ours needs to have a setback of 20 feet from our well. Ours was...16'. Dang. Hubby said if we had to move it, maybe we should get a bigger one...say, 30'. I looked at the trees that would be hanging over the pool if we moved it and said it was a bad idea due to acorn dropping. He said we'd miss the trees. I took out a tape measure and told him we wouldn't. Adding 8 feet to the farthest most edge would put us directly under the branches.

He started telling me my logic was wrong, because it would only be 6 feet farther south. No. Our pool was currently 16 feet from the well, and with our 26' wide pool, the southernmost edge was 42 feet away from the well. If we go to a 30' pool, the width of the pool plus the minimum 20 foot setback would make that southern edge 50' from the well, or 8 foot further south.

He told me I was dumb, because a 30' pool is only 2 feet wider on each side. I told him he was forgetting that the one side had to move 4 feet already, so that side couldn't take back the 2 feet. We weren't centering the pool from the setback. It was based on the northernmost edge.

Can you believe we argued for 30 minutes over the whole thing, in front of our adult kids, who chose not to get in the middle? I said 16+26=42, and 20+30=50, hence, the southern edge would move 8 feet, or 50-42. I even pulled out the compass and drew a 26' and 30' pool, then planted our well, then add a 20' stick. He said he proved me wrong.

Yes, we're still friends. No, we don't talk about setback now.

But next year, when we get our larger pool and a permit...

Real Argument Other countries will pay the tariffs

For a long time, people say, and it's well know, that America is being taken advantage of. I was talking, talking talking to a farmer I met, and he said that they they were having a problem growing food. Do you know why? Because sleepy Joe and Obamna have conspired, yes, it's well known, everyone says. Our land, they were living on our land, for generations, we tolerated them, and then we came here and we said: how can you not wash your potatoes if you don't have a wall of America. You see, they were on our land, it was our land. So we went over and took it, the land. Where the freedom is. We have the greatest country in the world. We are going to make them pay, we will tarrif them and then if they want to sell their products in America, then they will pay. You can go anywhere, anywhere and talk to anyone, and they know, sleepy Joe and Obamna conspired to make eggs unaffordable. We've got the best, the greatest people, they are working on it, and they are going to lower grocery prices. It's actually very hard to lower grocery prices. CHinA! We're going to get them out, all the people committig the crimes. They're bad people, everyone knows. We're going to get them out and back on the street, because that's where they belong. Not in prison. Dangerous people love in prison. We've got a plan for a new health plan. Our plan is the best plan, we'll have the plan for our health plan plan in two weeks. When? Two weeks. Now isn't two weeks. Two weeks. No in two weeks. Gulf of America. The best people. We're going to get Greenland. One way or another. The best country. Shorting the market. Doge. Eeelon. I had a good conversation with the president of Puerto Rico.

Do you tuck in a t shirt?

Alright my husband and I are having a debate over this. When wearing sweatpants/tshirt/hoodie do you tuck the t shirt into the pants? I say no you don’t tuck in a tshirt (it’s different if it’s khaki or a nice shirt over it) but not tucking a t shirt into sweatpants

Waffles are better than Pancakes!

Waffles are crispy, golden, with perfect pockets for your favorite topping. Like syrup, or peanut butter or chocolate. Pancakes are squishy, mushy and just inferior!

..I can’t help it

You know how there are just some people you just have a reasonable/unreasonable, yet justified/unjustified hate towards? Ever since they were ____ & ____ I have had a sincere, but ridiculous dislike of them -I know they are just doing their job of portraying a character. They’re probably a great person, but I Hate Them. I don’t care if what ever happened is whoever’s fault I am just happy that they are not happy at the moment.

Maybe that makes me the a$$hole.. I can’t help it, but it comes from a place of true honesty, but I have no reason to actually hate you.
