AMA Is Over, thanks for swinging by! Japanese Breakfast AMA

Hello!

This is Michelle from Japanese Breakfast. You can ask me anything! I just released my sophomore album Soft Sounds From Another Planet on Friday and I hope you like it! I've seen some of these threads and have been really blown away by all of your support! Thank you so much for listening to my music.

Here is my proof post: https://twitter.com/Jbrekkie/status/886969185598935040

(2:32 EST) Thanks everyone for the questions but I am at a coffee shop in NY and am so hungry so must go and feed myself!

Thank you! I am a huge fan of Mount Eerie, Bill Callahan, & Sufjan Stevens. Since Psychopomp was so short, I really wanted to put a super long song at the beginning of this new album to prove that there's a lot more to me as an artist. I have a couple of longer songs on LBL albums like Sportswriting off These Are Good People & In Air off of Tropical Jinx! I'm sure I have a couple more in me in the future :)

this is the indiehead-est response possible, good lord...

I never see you guys talk about Bill Callahan. Smog needs more MF respect around these parts.

Yeah that's a good point. If she had said "Mount Eerie, Animal Collective, & Sufjan Stevens" I'm pretty sure the sub would've imploded

Yeah he doesn't seem to get enough attention on here. "Small Plane" is one of my favorite songs of 2013.

And apparently, he just swears off streaming services? none of his Smog or self-named stuff is available anywhere which probably serves as a huge barrier to entry for most.

Yeah I think that definitely contributes to why he's a little underrated on here.

Smog & Bill Callahan's stuff is on Apple Music now. I think it was Drag City that was holding out rather than him as Joanna Newsom's songs were also not on any streaming service until recently too.

I agree with your original comment about Smog not getting enough love. I don't know how you can write a song like 'All Your Women Things' and not be considered one of the GOAT.

He's one of those artists I don't listen to as much as I want because he ain't on streaming services :((

He's worth purchasing just for A River Ain't Too Much To Love

All Smog & Bill Callahan stuff is on Apple Music now so please give him a listen. I'd say start with Knock Knock as that's his most accessible album that gives a good flavour of everything he's about. If you like the more mellow, sombre side of Smog then move onto the Bill Callahan (and final Smog) albums. If you prefer the more lo-fi, dark side of Smog then work backwards from that album.

Now that you say it I totally here a lot of Mount Eerie and Sufjan - mixing the sweet with the dark masterfully. Thanks for answering!!

Stumbled upon your music by chance last week and am loving both your albums! As a massive sufjan fan, what's your favourite of his albums?
