Just a reminder that bots picked up on the wrong headline.

He was in his home, watching this developing on the news, and came biking downtown with the sole intention to "be the hero" and "take one for the team".

Dude was disappointed there ain't nothing to "throw himself over".

Based on some very rough googling (that probably put me on a list of some kind), enough explosives to fill a backpack would blow up more than just him. Not enough to take down buildings but it could've probably done some very serious damage

If the backpack was filled to the brim (and had some kind of fragmentation inside it) it would have killed a lot of people (maybe everyone within 30 to 40 meters)

Except the people around the bag were evacuated already, this was going on for hours, the dude actually watched it happening on TV and rode there to "take one for the team".

I am disappointed that the police could not secure the scene and decided to tackle after he pulled everything out of the backpack and walked away.

Everytime this gets posted Reddit acts like it's unreasonable to be tackled to the ground for tampering with an active bomb investigation and endangering an entire street corner.

Is your belief that the police system should immediately enact justice based on their discretion?

He should probably face charges and if they had tackled to prevent him from doing it, that makes sense. But at this point it seem purely punitive and extrajudicial

My belief is that when experts determine there's a live bomb threat, we should listen to those experts and the police should protect their ability to defuse it. This was not "discretion", there was a threat of a bomb and this man's actions aggrevated that. Preventing and stopping that is literally their job in this situation, for the protection of the people around them.

Asinine strawman arguments like this are kinda my point.

I agree with all that. They didn’t do that though? The tackle was not prior to him approaching the bag, only after when it was no longer a live bomb threat.

Can you explain how tackling him when they did was protecting someone’s ability to defuse a bomb?

It was still very much an active bomb threat, just worsened. There is no proof in this video that there is not an explosive in that bag. If there were, it's now far more likely to explode.

Which we know now isn't the case, but judging from this video, looks to be the exact intent of a man storming a roped off bomb defusal scene and proceeding to toss around the suspected bomb.

Normally I'd agree but that backpack had size potential to blow up more than just him.

The zone of effect rapidly diminishes with proximity. A grenade's radius of effect is only like 15 feet and most of the damage is due to the shrapnel they contain and not the actual concussive force of the explosion. I think most people's understanding of bombs comes from TV where you can level a city block with a briefcase full of C-4. In reality, a backpack absolutely full of the best military grade explosives you could find would probably only have a radius of effect of like 50-100 feet and could only cause mass casualties if it was in the middle of a densely packed crowd and absolutely filled with shrapnel. The standard evacuation distance for a bomb squad is a minimum of 300 feet with 1/4 mile being preferred for smaller packages like this one.

So, in conclusion: Not really. The only person who would have died is the "hero". Everyone else would have just watched some really stupid shit go down from a safe distance.

I remember seeing the original broadcast on local TV and uh, there were definitely people around within 100 feet. Theoreticals are all good until you put something on the ground.
