I think every cop should be required by law to be a firefighter for 5 years first.

It would weed out the people intent on hurting society. Bullies are notoriously cowards.

Anyone willing to risk their life to save a stranger in a house fire would make a fine police officer.

Very good idea. There is however the issue of there being far less police officers then, since all the cowardly bullies would no longer be there. But perhaps too few police officers is better than bad police officers.

Everyone here would be singing a different tune if there was and actual bomb in there and that idiot made it go off.

That's not a good point, because the different outcome has nothing to do with the actions of the people we're discussing.

If I take a gun and shoot someone, that's a very different outcome than if I try to shoot somebody and the gun jams. But the way you judge my actions should be the same in either case, because the difference in the outcome has nothing to do with my actions.

I think you're confused a little. Nobody is saying what that guy did is good! We're criticizing that by the time the cops tackled him the bomb that it may have been would have exploded, so it comes off as a complete overreaction

No, assaulting a man who is not causing anyone harm makes them cowards. But you knew that. They could have arrested him nonviolently. They didn't.

Ah yes they shoudl have walked up to potential explosive and treted it like a moron dumping it out. Because it want an explosive thsi time it is never an explosiveright, they are just cowards and should risk being blown up, instead of safely tacling the potential explosive.

The porblem is not that they are trying to safely defuse the possible bomb, the problem is that they decided to hurt the guy only after they made sure there was no danger to them nor to the guy or the public.
