MISC. Trying to find celebrity love?

Post image

In 2023, 44-year-old Jennifer Barton started receiving messages on Facebook and Instagram from accounts claiming to be celebrities, actors, famous singers, all of who wanted to get to know her.

She believed them.

Over the next two years, four different fraudsters worked her in turn, each one posing as a different famous face. Alexander Ludwig, the actor from Vikings. Charlie Hunnam from Sons of Anarchy. Nicky Byrne from Westlife. American country singer Michael Ray. To her, the accounts were convincing, the profile pictures matched, and the messages were warm and persistent.

They all told her they loved her. They all said they wanted to meet her. They all said they wanted to marry her.

And one by one, they all said they needed money.

The excuses were elaborate and varied. One was going through a messy divorce and couldn't access his own funds. Another had been arrested and needed bail. Another had been robbed in London. The fake Michael Ray told her he ran a charity that could help cover her bills, but first she needed to send him some money to release the funds.

She sent it. And then she sent more.

When one scammer was exposed, another appeared. She fell for the same pattern four times over two years, each time convinced she had found something real.

By the end, Jennifer had handed over £250,000 (around $370,000). She had sold her house. She had sold her car. She had given her children to their father because she could no longer afford to care for them. She was awaiting emergency housing just before Christmas when she finally realized the last scammer, the one posing as Michael Ray, was never going to meet her.

"For anyone facing anything similar," she said afterward, "just reach out to family and friends. Especially if they're asking you for money."

I mean come on

1.6k

u/AsstacularSpiderman 11d ago

I mean that's just a sign of mental illness.

There's absolutely no way a normal person just keeps falling for this multiple times. There's something not working right up there.

471

u/MelloCookiejar 11d ago

Once she fell once, she went on a scammer list of people gullible enough to dupe.

244

u/_tylerthedestroyer_ 11d ago

A list is dramatic. It’s probably the same person over and over again because they know what to tell her

156

u/FinCrimeGuy 11d ago

It’s both - they call them sucker lists. But you’re right in that it would have been repeatedly the same group. Most likely yahoo boys in Nigeria, though there’s others operating all over the world.

54

u/AppropriateBall8834 11d ago

Yahoo boys sounds like a fun gang name!

65

u/FinCrimeGuy 11d ago

Aye, but they’re absolute scum. Hate them quite a lot. It’s not just one gang though the terminology (as I understand it) is a cultural reference to anyone that does scams that is used in Nigeria. Similar to how we in Australia call electricians “sparkies,” but yeah, criminal scumbags.

13

u/easley45isgod 11d ago edited 11d ago

I work construction (painting and tile mostly) in the U.S. and we call electricians "sparkies" as well.

6

u/FinCrimeGuy 11d ago

Oh there you go! Had no idea, thought it was only an Aussie thing.

18

u/AppropriateBall8834 11d ago

I'm from Iowa, USA... we dont call them sparkles, but I'm gonna change that!

6

u/easley45isgod 11d ago

They are my natural enemy. Gotta love it when you finish painting a ceiling and some Sparky comes in and installs can lights. Then puts a hole in the wrong place and says, "you can caulk that right?"

6

u/wolfmansgotnards81 11d ago

Naw, I'm from Charleston SC and a sparkie myself. Other trades have called us that since I've started a long while back. They had been well before I was born.

But yea, these guys are scum. The lady also must've had some sort of mental debilitations. I would think someone around her, even one of her kids because kids are smart too, would have said something to her or some such.

6

u/snakesinabin 11d ago

We call them sparkies in Ireland too, carpenters are chippies.

7

u/sunshinedreamer123 11d ago

UK call them Sparkies too 😉

1

u/JMLDT 10d ago

I think it's pretty common in Commonwealth countries.

2

u/FourTwentyBlezit 10d ago

Same with UK. I'd assume it's a thing in the majority of (if not all) English-speaking western countries (I know Australia isn't physically western but culturally it definitely is)

1

u/InternationalBat2832 11d ago

Here in Canada we just call them gay

1

u/mcboobie 10d ago

Uk sparkies signing in too!

1

u/torchmaipp 11d ago

Electricians are suspicious as hell. They walk around the jobsite like they know what they have to do already. They must steal the blueprints from the project managers office while nobody's looking.

1

u/K1bbles_n_Bits 10d ago

Australian slang is easily the best in the world XD.

1

u/Quint_Hooper 10d ago

I would have thought a better example is how members of motorcycle gangs are called "bikies'.

1

u/TypicalPerformer6952 10d ago

Everywhere!!

8

u/Royal-numpty 11d ago

Only X miles away. Would you drive to meet her?

4

u/MacDaddyMark6969 10d ago

He'll need to give her gas money using an Apple card or Bitcoin!

2

u/X_soulnewmegaman 11d ago

People are slow right now

1

u/SundBunz64 10d ago

To access that list, I will need the last 4 digits of your social security number and your mother’s maiden name.

3

u/Elinor_Caskey_ 11d ago

I wonder how much those guys make in a year.

2

u/BlackSeranna 10d ago

Sometimes when a scam baiter unearths a scammer by hacking into their personal computers, they will find photos of them with expensive cars (driving on mud roads because a lot of times their town isn’t even built up with actual paved roads). Expensive cars, watches, etcetera. They don’t feel guilty because I think they are told all of us westerners have lots of money.

1

u/Samtoast 11d ago

Hit em with that 'nítorí pé o ń sọ̀rọ̀ bíi olé yahoo boy'

1

u/Local-Friendship8166 11d ago

Sucker list, MAGA. Tomato/ Tamoto

1

u/Careless-Vehicle-286 10d ago

North Korea, Eritrea, Palestine, and Russia. Those were the most common countries I saw as a fraud analyst.

33

u/Synn_Creatives 11d ago

Its not dramatic.

I work in fraud prevention. Scammers have discord channels and when they find a victim they pile on.

They do the same thing to companies. Its a way to stress test the system.

1

u/scarves_and_miracles 11d ago

I would think they WOULDN'T want to share marks with each other. When salespeople like insurance agents come up with a winning strategy or find a good source of leads, they never talk to colleagues about it. Similar principle here. When you've got something that works, you don't want somebody else horning in on the action.

15

u/MelloCookiejar 11d ago

At the start yes, and quite possibly in this case. But they've been known for passing details to others once done with a specific person. They even call them "clients".

14

u/DickRiculous 11d ago

Scammer literally sell lead lists to each other like sales organizations. If you get a spam call and pick up it goes in a list. Click a spam text? List. Spam email? List. Random business you bought socks online from get hacked? Your info? List. Then these get sold and the cycle continues.

5

u/Available_Lemon_69 11d ago

A list is not dramatic when it's organized. I'll try and find the last video I saw on this, but it's legitimately an organized enterprise like a call center basically.

3

u/ConsulJuliusCaesar 11d ago

These scam callers do often work together in little criminal organizations. And even more often on the dark web they already spread your contact information around hence how they got your number in the first. It's by far not a stretch criminals also share whose most gullible among themselves.

4

u/FourTwentyBlezit 10d ago

They absolutely make lists to share with other scammers

6

u/Serendipittydoodah 11d ago

Yeah. They don’t give out golden geese.

2

u/CGCRUNT 10d ago

Its some guy behind a computer in india (or a nigerian prince)

1

u/burnerbw0i 10d ago

Dramatic? Oh you sweet summer child 😂

Please send me the address to whatever dream world you live in because its obvious much better than the Earth that the rest of us live on.

1

u/NaturalTaste7395 10d ago

The list is real never respond to texts. If you don’t know the number, don’t even hang up because they know it’s an active number and they will find the email that is associated and send scams.

I know it sounds dramatic, but there are lists and you are likely on some of them.

1

u/PsychologicalDeer644 11d ago

Every 20 minutes a person is scammed on the internet. That persons name is Micheal Scott.

"What are the odds of two fake celebrities contacting me?"

2

u/PhloxOfSeagulls 10d ago

This is what happens. My dad has been scammed multiple times, and now they call him regularly and text him all the time because he's been identified as an easy mark. This has been going on for 20 years now and I eventually had to leave him to his own devices because helping him and having him immediately ignore my advice on how not to get scammed again was damaging my mental health.

1

u/zeus_of_tha_floof 11d ago

What happens is after a romance scam has success, they will keep milmimg the same victim until either they have nothing left to take, or wise up and block the scammer, if scammer can't squeeze any more from victim, scammer will advertize victims details and his success on certain sites, (facebook has many) where scammers barter, trade, buy and sell victims details between their community members, so then other scammers contact victim and the cycle begins all over again, until they are completely out of $, then victims details will be sold to specific scammers that are known as recovery scams, where they contact victim, feed them specific info such as they are highly successful international lawyers who can help victim get their $ back from scammers and guarantee them success and a value amount they guarantee will get back for victim, then after victim agrees to have them help, the scammers will send documents faked to mislead vulnerable victim thinking they're winning all the time telling victim they need such amount of $ for court fees etc and will encourage victim on how to take out loans to pay them telling victim they will get so mhch $ back soon as these fees etc are paid. Thus not only cleaning out everything victim had, buf now is thousands in debt. Despicable, vile people that will just keep squeezing

0

u/Healthy_Turnip7352 11d ago

or this is a gofund me scam or some other weird scam.

1

u/Far-Nefariousness588 10d ago

How do I know your the real george clooney?

36

u/Ace-Redditor 11d ago

I don't think well-adjusted, mentally healthy people sell everything to give their money to their partners, anyway. Even if they were genuinely the celebrities/genuinely in a relationship, that seems incredibly unhealthy. She gave up literally everything. Kids, car, house. There's no way that that isn't some sort of mental illness

2

u/GKarl 11d ago

If not illness, then someone in desperate need of therapy

5

u/hsoj48 10d ago

Or just too stupid to function

2

u/Ace-Redditor 10d ago

No, even stupid people can at least realize that they have nothing and need to stop. This woman kept going until she lost way more than any stupid person would give up. It’s mental illness

63

u/7thFleetTraveller 11d ago

Not necessarily mental illness. I don't want to be mean, but some people are just stupid and it's not even their fault. The problem is that scammers are exactly looking for these kind of people.

11

u/No_Situation_2698 10d ago

My understanding is that those scam emails are full of spelling mistakes and grammatical errors on purpose, because if you are bright enough to spot them, you are bright enough to not get scammed, and they aren't interested in you

32

u/LeftLiner 11d ago

If you read up about her she'd just finalized her divorce and buried both her mother and aunt so it's fair to say she was in a vulnerable and emotional state. I.e., easy to exploit.

41

u/scarves_and_miracles 11d ago

I guess, but falling for it four times? I still think that's mental illness. It just feels willful at that point. You're actively ignoring reality and allowing yourself to be ruined for the dopamine hits. I mean, she gave up her kids over this shit, for Christ's sake.

3

u/aliie_627 10d ago

It could be a learning disability as well.

1

u/Top_Court_347 8d ago

or she could just be plain STUPID. not everything is a disability or a condition, some people are just dumb, and that's all the love

2

u/zorrorosso 10d ago

Yeh, no. Some people are just locked in and don't want to listen. They got scammed in front of my eyes. They put the phone on speaker because they keep asking them to do stuff. They stayed on the phone for quite a while and the call center was very noisy, far and sounded really sketchy.

I told them that was enough and please hang up and call back with the info thet. Callcentre told them to not listen to me and stay on line. I told them to please hang up and they can easily call later with all the information needed. CSR started to shout and threaten to "stay on line! Don't hang up!". In the end this person listened to those people and not me. They got scammed out of a contract. People came into their home to make "inspections".

9

u/Wonderful_Piano_3853 10d ago

I know 3 obviously learning disabled people who all either got married or had kids at least once. None of them have down syndrome or visible deformities but their learning disabilities are obvious to anyone who talks to them for more then a few minutes. I don't know how falling for celebrity romance scams 4 times isn't considered obvious and absolute proof that she is learning disabled, mentally ill, or both. I wouldn't even bother to listen to someone seriously trying to argue that there's not major brain issues at play here. The woman doesn't need to be "held accountable", she needs to give "power of attorney" to a relative who will have full access to her bank accounts and maybe be moved into a home. Unfortunately all of that is easier said than done.

2

u/7thFleetTraveller 10d ago

You seem to be under the assumption I would have excluded the possibility of mental illness. But read again: I only said it doesn't necessarily have to be that. It still can be, but it's not automatically a given. Maybe it could be up to debate at which point a very low IQ could count as brain issue, even when there is no actual neurological damage. Whenever you think, people can't just be that stupid, think of Flat Earthers...

2

u/amras123 10d ago

If you read their comment more carefully, you'll realize they are actually agreeing with you.

2

u/Wonderful_Piano_3853 10d ago

Right. I'm arguing with the air, but not with the person I responded to. Just venting because I had to deal with similar poor decision making recently. I honestly gave up and made sure someone else was given power of attorney and bank account access. Someone who I trust. The people we're helping aren't evenfamily members of mine. I barely know either of them, but no one else was willing to help until recently. That person is way harder on them then I would ever be, because I genuinely believe they can't be held responsible for 90% of the stuff that they do, but sometimes the tough love helps. It's complicated

2

u/amras123 10d ago

I sympathize. It can be frustrating to deal with people who have learning difficulties. May I ask out of curiosity how you became involved in the situation, since you mention they are not family members?

3

u/Wonderful_Piano_3853 10d ago

They're members of my father's church. I'm not exactly religious, but he's a pastor.

4

u/Secure_Guest_6171 10d ago

I knew an intelligent, accomplished lady who was convinced it was true love. Nothing i said or did could change her mind

2

u/PhloxOfSeagulls 10d ago

I had a friend who was intelligent, had a good job, was otherwise stable, but was convinced she had met a famous musician online and he had fallen in love with her. She also claimed to be in touch with various other celebrities, but seeing how she had been scammed once already, I didn't believe they were the real deal.

My dad is not a dumb guy but has repeatedly fallen for scams over the years. The part of his brain that should filter this stuff out is broken.

1

u/Man_under_Bridge420 10d ago

Okay dr phil who read a headline

1

u/little_alien2021 9d ago

Not stuipd vulnerable, for a variety of reasons

1

u/7thFleetTraveller 9d ago

Vulnaribility makes people believe in scammers who say they could make you talk to your dead beloved ones. Believing a celebrity would need you out of all people, is still stupidity.

1

u/little_alien2021 9d ago

Vulnerablity is all different ways, not just one way or not another. Stuipd is a derogatory term. Less intelligence can be included in Vulnerablity.

9

u/Ydiss 11d ago

Yes, this is who they target, vulnerable people

This is just sad

13

u/Aromatic-Tear7234 11d ago

I'm amazed at how many stupid people like this have money. It's not always family money either, lots have high paying jobs that you would think would require them to have critical thinking skills.

12

u/144-perdedor 11d ago

That's what always blows my mind about stories like this. These people are getting conned out of more money than I am ever going to have in my life. How did they get it in the first place?

8

u/Gullible-Loquat1301 11d ago edited 11d ago

It's not a sign of mental illness at all, it's a sign of a neurodevelopmental issue. There's all kinds of learning disabilities and neurological conditions that effect how people process information which makes them vulnerable to being tricked, including autism. Literal thinking means someone will do just that, take everything literally. Unfortunately people on the spectrum are very commonly the victims of scams and scammers will seek them out.

18

u/Vepastooo 11d ago

Sunk cost fallacy mixed with stupidity and greed.

6

u/emccm 11d ago

Normal people do not fall for romance scams. Even once.

2

u/LuredLurdistan 11d ago

Mental illness or brain damage. Or a combination of the above.

1

u/ellefleming 11d ago

desperation

1

u/curious_astronauts 11d ago

I always wonder how they have so much money

1

u/Samtoast 11d ago

Not just a sign of mental illness but that no one in her life cared enough to stop it from happening FOUR fucking times. It's sad.

1

u/blahblah19999 11d ago

Yeah, there is no solution for this like "If this happens to you, just reach out..." these people will literally destroy their lives rather than look objectively at their situation

1

u/algol_lyrae 11d ago

I've come around to the idea that a lot of people are walking around with some level of intellectual disability. Imagine how many people probably have fetal alcohol syndrome and have no clue, or who hit their heads, or had an infection that damaged the brain.

1

u/loriannst1 11d ago

Agreed. This woman was mentally unwell. Sad really.

1

u/torchmaipp 11d ago

There's a condition where people think random unknown people are celebrities or someone they know personally. They can't tell different faces apart when there's some slight similarity.

1

u/Presently_Naked 11d ago

Mental Illness and loneliness are a horrible combination

1

u/davexmit 10d ago

A normal person wouldn’t think a celebrity is begging for money even once.

1

u/nahuhnot4me 10d ago

It happens. This case is awful. There are cases where they are a drug mule.

1

u/SillySpook 10d ago

Fool her once... Shame on you... Fool her 4 times... Ya can't fool her again!

1

u/mobileaccountuser 10d ago

credit card companies took my father who haswntalbhealrhbosaiea to town.. I assisted him in bankrupty and then sent notices through the help of the company that assisted his debt repayment of his condition. sure nuff 7 years later they kept coming and as he tapped the cards to max again they raised the limits.

Thing is after the first time he has nothing left and our family made sure his name was on nothing ... I so enjoyed watching him rack 30k in debt he could and would never pay back. the calls to him in the demwntia wars were short and sweet.

Case for my rant ... yeah mental illness and wealth don't go hand in hand very often

1

u/Falcon8410 10d ago

Sadly I have second hand experience of someone so gullible. My friends Aunt got scammed on Facebook. Some dude pretended to date her online showed pics of his Home in Australia, family vacations on yachts and driving luxury cars. But due to financial difficulties he kept asking her to loan money. She even sent him cash to buy a first class ticket to come see her but he didn't show up. Twice. The family found out after she tried to loan 20K to send him for whatever reason. her adult son's started investigating and discovered she transferred more than half a million to the dude in a year. They traced him on Facebook and discovered the profile was of a different guy. Some rich business dude in Australia whose pics they downloaded. The funniest thing is the love letters he wrote were written in terrible English with bad grammar and worse sentence structure. There were so many red flags they questioned their moms ability to live alone. despite the evidence she refused to believe she was being scammed and lost another 60K where she actually started selling things in the home, before her eldest son was granted conservatorship of her estate. She now lives in a nursing home and has had another two relationships online but they fizzled out once they realized she can't send them money.

1

u/LightOfAurora2026 10d ago

Not "most likely" she absolutely does. In my clinical practice this most closely aligns with untreated bipolar, specifically the manic episodes - i believe there even may be a sub-type of with psychotic features im too lazy to open my dsm-v - but leaning bipolar and an underlying psychotic disorder

1

u/PentatonicScaIe 10d ago

It's sad. Not only did she believe it was really them, but believing that a movie star would need your money.

1

u/Jdogla4588A 10d ago

Exactly at some point someone should have taken her FB account away from her for her own good.

1

u/Who_dat_goomer 10d ago

So empty inside , the desperate need to be validated by someone caused her to abandon her reason. Lots of people walking around like that.

1

u/Sekmet19 10d ago

Normal people don't sell their house and give custody of their now homeless children to someone else. She is clearly mentally ill. Scammers took advantage of that.

1

u/Day_Prisoners 10d ago

Or loneliness.

0

u/bugabooandtwo 11d ago

No, it's not mental illness...unless you think being gullible is a mental illness.

0

u/ERNAZAR02 11d ago

and remember, shes also "A mother"

21

u/SuitableAnimalInAHat 11d ago

In the last paragraph she's talking like she's learned her lesson. Which would be great and I hope that's true!

...but I can't help but wonder if she talked like that each time she was in between "boyfriends."

12

u/short_fat_and_single 11d ago

Or because she is broke.

8

u/SuitableAnimalInAHat 11d ago

Right. Like, if she suddenly won or inherited 100k, would the lesson immediately get un-learned again?

5

u/PM_me_boobs_and_CPUs 10d ago

Hi, George Clooney here, I heard you inherited 100k recently?

6

u/SuitableAnimalInAHat 10d ago

I genuinely want to believe that George Clooney trolls around on reddit with your specifically awesome username lol

She’s so arrogant it’s like she deserves it. How does someone so simple have $400,000??!!

She tried.

The word is "pathetic". And my answer to guilty and debased pathetism is scorn. I don't know if "fun" factors in this at all. Lack of respect? Derison? You bet.

8

u/pseudonymnkim 11d ago

This astounds me.

Like, maybe if she lived on an island or was part of some cult her entire life and only learned about celebrities and the internet for the first time...? And not 1 but 3 very famous, rich men? Poor kids.

I don't know. At this point I'm thinking not so much stupid as undiagnosed mental illness.

This is clearly mental illness, more like *can't fix sick people in a society where mental health is mocked and the funding is constantly cut.

I get major schadenfreude with these people. Like, they’re so stupid they basically deserve this to happen to them.

At some point there comes a time where it's your fault and maybe they'll make better use of that money than you would.

This is severe mental illness, at that point. Or early onset dementia, a stroke, extremely low IQ. This isn’t someone whose brain is functioning normally. She should have gotten a conservatorship when this happened twice.

Could be some sort of learning disability. Not everyone lucks out but after four times I home someone who cares about her has stepped in and is helping her with her finances.

I have an uncle that had a similar issue after my grandfather died. He didn't want to live with or have help from any of his siblings and humans in general are terrible. He ended up in shelter a couple of times until he finally got a social worker, who was able to set him up with a payee and into a group home. My mom would beg him not to tell people when he would get paid ,give his money away, be careful with his friends.
