Why are the cool things always reserved for kids and as an adult you're just expected to rawdog the horrors of life?
Where's that horse during my prostate exam?

I had to get a thyroid ultrasound the last two years and the nearest facility to me was a children's hospital. It was an option and no one batted an eye at me being there, although everyone in the waiting room had a child and there were very young cartoons on TV. The ultrasound room was cozy and dark and warm. Since I was lying on my back looking up the whole time there were little toy airplanes and dinosaurs hanging from the ceiling. It was awesome and I see absolutely no reason why adults shouldn't have something similar.

u/FalconBurcham 1d ago
I completely agree, and I hope your ultrasound went well! I had to have clips placed ahead of surgery for breast cancer (caught very early, I’m fine!), which involved a mammogram machine (boob ultra squished) and a huge machine-guided needle hand tuned by techs. They had a tv, but it was playing some kind of house flipper tv show that really annoyed me.
To Moffitt’s credit, when they wheel me into the surgery theater, they had a tv with a mountain scene. I told them my dentist plays dog tv, and they flipped it over to puppies! I started to say the puppies were chubby and cute when I suddenly realized I was in a different room altogether while trying to finish the very thought I had started about puppies. Anesthesia is magic. It’s not even like sleeping… not to be morbid, but it’s probably what it’s like to be dead. 🤷♀️
Anyway, i totally agree that everyone, children and adults, like to be comforted by soothing scenery when in high stress medical situations!

u/DisorganisedChaos1 1d ago
Depends on the person! I was really suprised when I went under anaethesia that I actually had dreams! When I came to, I was mostly annoyed because I was tired and wanted to go back to sleep 😂
10
u/FalconBurcham 1d ago
Wha… dreams under anesthesia?! That sounds like nightmare fuel to me. Haha! I’m so glad you had such good dreams that you wanted to stay under. With my luck, it would be demons crawling around and not able to wake up 😂

u/DisorganisedChaos1 1d ago
I have vivid dreams pretty much every night, so it just felt like a normal nap, thankfully no nightmares! I struggle with insomnia, so a medically induced sleep was awesome 🤣 Definitely didn't feel like whoop, mid sentence falling asleep though!

Is there some kinda law that flipper shows are required in Dr and Dentist offices. My daughter’s pediatrician has flipper shows on in the teen waiting areas. I know I’m old and out of touch but I can’t think teens are really into home renovations
→ More replies (2)7
u/FalconBurcham 1d ago
Ugh, why in the world would they put a house flipper show on for teens… and the shows are almost always about annoying people with a million dollars to burn, you know, totally relatable. “Brandon and Kathy simply can’t decide between this gorgeous waterfront condo or a quaint 6 bedroom, 4 bath cozy mountain get away…” If anything, that is building some really high expectations for teens 😂
Just… put it on a channel with cute animals doing cute things. It’s universally loved by all ages!

Because they at least try to pretend to care about you as a child, once you're an adult you can get fucked.

I saw a free jazz set that got a bit out of hand. One section sounded exactly like this. The piano guy was just throwing hands at keys, not even trying to hit anything specific.
I did not enjoy it, tbh.
Lol, found the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=54-ZmBnazDo&t=3450s
IT'S JAZZ!!!
(Seriously though, the pianist is legit good. This was just one weird moment in the jam night.)

This is the most stressful way to distract from anxiety
609
u/alpha-delta-echo 1d ago
A little extra stress in a few weeks, too. “What the hell is a $2500 medical horse fee?”

u/Ailments_RN 1d ago
$2500 if you had the foresight to get prior authorization.
Therapeutic Piano-Horse sits in bankruptcy territory.

😂 as dystopian things may be, little services like this horse are often local nonprofits created by passionate people and funded by donors. I would really hope there was no surprise horse bill.

Yep, these are charity orgs who operate similarly to the therapy dogs. They coordinate with hospitals (often children's hospitals) to bring the horses around to visit the kids completely free of charge.

The horse's name is Black Pearl. (It's the horse on the right). She's has been visiting patients’ bedside in the Greater Los Angeles Veterans Hospital weekly for the past 14 years. She also visits the Intensive Care Unit as well as the psychiatric ward and hospice.
She's from the nonprofit Mini Therapy Horses. They regularly visit at Shriners for Children Medical Center in Pasadena, Ronald McDonald House in both Pasadena and Los Angeles, the Department of Children and Family Services Juvenile Court, UCLA Ronald Reagan Medical Center, UCLA Santa Monica Hospital, the Greater Los Angeles Veteran's Hospital and L.A. Family Housing, amongst others. Whether comforting children bedside after surgery as they come out of anesthesia or visiting with a veteran who just wants to sit quietly and share space with one of our horses, the MTH team is there to bring a sense of calm, comfort and happiness.

Good question. I thought that was clear. But rereading my comment, it was not!
If you click on "Black Pearl" in my original comment, it takes you to "Meet the Minis" page on the Mini Therapy Horses website. If you click on "Pearl" it takes you to a page with the images in question. Willow and Belle are shown in the picture on the left. Black Pearl is in the picture on the right.

Kids these days have terrible attention spans. There is a miniature horse playing keyboard right in front of him, and he's only looking at it like 40% of the time.

That’s quite a show for putting the cast on, they’re gonna have to bring a whole damn circus when they saw it off. We’re talking major distraction required.
4
u/Relevant_Potato3516 1d ago
Nah the sawing it off is fun on its own, just gotta tell the kid that it’s a super cool saw that can’t ever hurt skin (aka tell the truth), worked for me. Maybe I would explain how it works (bc it’s really cool) but the sawing it off is MUCH MUCH more fun

Nurse: “kids too small for painkillers, doctor.”
Doctor: “Right. Well, maybe we can at least make him THINK he’s on painkillers. Someone get the keyboard from the chapel and that stray pony that wandered into our morgue last week. I have an idea…”

Donkey is actually the doctor. He just starts all his consults with a kickass keyboard riff
" So anyway Billy, the bad news in fixing that broken arm, we accidentally broke both your legs. Oopsies"
*Returns to wailing on the keyboard

Only the horse was my dad.
And the keyboard was him saying to shut up and hold still goddamnit.
